@si_fuller@aus.social

I'm a middle-aged single dad living on the Atherton Tablelands, Australia. I work in Aged Care. Hobbies include tabletop roleplaying games, casual computer gaming, short hikes, and wincing in pain. Take it as read that I believe in all the usual left-wing, egalitarian stuff, but I rarely post about any of it.

I talk about Sweden way too much for someone who isn't in any way Swedish. Sometimes I even try writing in Svensk.

@dgar At my last job we had a photocopier where it actually made a difference. If you didn't safely remove it, you'd lose your work.

The Google Doodle today is a flat white. Cute. Is it international coffee day or something?

si_fuller,
@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@timrichards Google doodles were once quirky, fun, rare, and often informative. There doesn't seem to be any point to them now. The difference between doing something lighthearted because you can, and doing something because market testing suggested a 3% increase in eye focus, I suppose.

A confession. I am fully supportive of trans people, and have been for some time. Someone very close to me is in the early stages of their journey. But I cannot fet my head around the "they/them" pronouns. I try, but the language centre of my brain rebels. I think the problem is that it's plural. "She does", "he does", "they do". It doesn't compute to my brain. I'm not trying to make any point here, it's just where I find myself.

Anyway, I will continue to try to be a good ally. I'll master the language eventually.

One of the biggest mistakes I ever made in life was back in 1987...

When this pair of dodgy looking bespectacled dudes knocked on my door asking about some sort of sponsored walk.

I stupidly offered them £10 a mile.

And if that wasn't bad enough on its own, they went well overboard letting everyone know about it.

@dgar a little while ago I played that song as a joke, it's such a silly thing. But on listening, I was reminded that for all the silliness, it's a damn good tune, and I ended up adding it to my playlist.

Strange coincidence: the ancients name a moving star God the Father, and thousands of years later it turns out to be the biggest planet in our solar system.

@mrundkvist I don't know if it's a coincidence, it's also the biggest-looking planet from Earth (assuming you don't look down).

A couple of 11th century runic spell amulets found at Köpingsvik invoke Christ and the Virgin Mary on behalf of a woman named Oluv. She is being threatened by ”the roaring giant”, ”the three-headed giant” and ”the unmanly/homosexual giant”.

si_fuller,

@mrundkvist Any idea what these giants were? Presumably she wasn't scared of actual enormous people. Some kind of forces of nature?

Why his electorate keeps voting him back in is a mystery. But then Bob Katter keeps getting re-elected too. Personally I'd like something more than "colourful" from my local MP.

Barnaby Joyce video: Parliament’s most colourful character has fallen down. Can he get up again?

(maybe paywalled) https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/parliament-s-most-colourful-character-has-fallen-down-can-he-get-up-again-20240214-p5f4w4.html

si_fuller,
@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@timrichards Speaking as someone from Katter's electorate (no I don't vote for him), Katter is a loon, but he's a reliable loon with integrity, who genuinely represents the wishes of his support base (entitled farmers).
Joyce is none of that.

Blocking people who whinge about paywalled articles. Very satisfying. That is the number one irritating thing about Mastodon, entitled people who insist you post stuff entirely for their convenience.

si_fuller,

I finally watched the 10 S3 episodes that were recently added to Disney+. "Dragon" may be my new favorite, and like every episode that focuses on Chili's family, is subtextually, incredibly sad. And then I saw "Cricket," and I love me some Rusty...
