I'm a middle-aged single dad living on the Atherton Tablelands, Australia. I work in Aged Care. Hobbies include tabletop roleplaying games, casual computer gaming, short hikes, and wincing in pain. Take it as read that I believe in all the usual left-wing, egalitarian stuff, but I rarely post about any of it.

I talk about Sweden way too much for someone who isn't in any way Swedish. Sometimes I even try writing in Svensk.

Things I accomplished cutting down the (now wasp-less) tree limb with an axe today:
*3 blisters
*skinned elbow
*aggravated damaged nerve
*sore hands
*broken axe handle.
Things I did not accomplish:
*Cutting off the limb.
I've cut 2/3 of the way through, damn thing is defying gravity like a Road Runner cartoon.

Good read. When I occasionally review live comedy/theatre at my Patreon, I never give star ratings. They're too simplistic.

@Tim_Eagon I think the cat stole our elf, and I didn't waste any time looking for it.

@timrichards I'm not keen on the expensive part, but the bitterer the betterer.

A fine Scandy expression: "Det är ingen ko på isen", "No cow is on the ice", it's not a matter of pressing concern.

si_fuller,
@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@mrundkvist As I understand it, the full phrase is something like "there's no cow on the ice until all four hooves are on it", which makes good sense as a meraphor, it won't be slipping around chaotically as long as it has two feet on solid ground.

But maybe that's just made up to justify a whacko phrase, I don't know.

One of the bridges on the edge of town got wiped out completely, taking the water pipes with it. Now a lot of Mareeba is isolated, and has no tapwater. My house is okay, but there's a lot of older people out that way.

Wujal Wujal is a small indigenous town consisting of a couple of hundred people. They're in for a wild night. Cape Tribulation is half the size but white people and tourists. I don't doubt that the residents of both are having less fun with this than me.

It's still remarkably calm and mild, but things are about to get fun if the satellite image is accurate.

I am now well and truly inside the danger zone of the cyclone, supposedly getting buckets of rain and gale force winds.

Outside, the leaves are barely moving, and not a drop is falling. It's almost eerie.

si_fuller,
@si_fuller@aus.social avatar

@timrichards No, we're not going to get that (though I've been through an eye once). It's just a weird trick of the weather. Proper landfall will be around 5pm, but the worst will still be well north. It's very dark here, and the wind has actually just picked up.

I haven't seen the bower bird bower around the corner from my house in a while. The little bird hasn't stopped improvements. Here we see a solid road of white things leading to the bower, darker objects and a bit of green at the front to really help the foreshortening illusion. And on one side - and only on one side - of the bower, there is a modest collection of red things. I'm not sure what they add, but the bird likes the effect.

Talked with the ex-wife about divorce, custody, that sort of thing. We remain civil and amenable, but nothing much was decided. And I feel emotionally like a big oozing pile of toxic pitch.

Life is hard.

@mrundkvist This is a good goal for us, and we'll probably end up doing something similar. I'm very happy that all but one of the kids want to stay with me, and the ex accepts that.
