🇺🇲 🇲🇽 ECE x EPP
Two goals are to do a 40-mile bike ride by May 2023 (☑️) and climb twin peaks by March (☑️). I'm a little scared but excited to take on these challenges! I first got online to discuss/keep up with the NBA and college football, but got into transit/biking after coming to California, and expect this account to stay mostly in those spaces.

People might know more about the Mission but the Tenderloin’s almost exclusively Mayan community is so interesting! There are so many new little restaurants with almost no Google reviews, every one of them a Yucatán specialist. Even the street food sellers do Yucatán stuff (there’s a guy on the street corner who does this wafer, cheese and chocolate roll)

signaltap,
@signaltap@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte do you have any restaurant recommendations? I'm trying to find one or more places to take my parents when they visit (my mom lived in Merida for a long time)

@skinnylatte nice, thanks! I've been to El Rincon Yucateco, I'll check the other two out as well

This article had some themes that I've been thinking about a lot. Biggest, there's the huge collective shift in behavior caused by the pandemic that has remained, with WFH and at-home activities remaining big compared to pre-pandemic commutes and nights out. This often gets waved off as "crime" or "kids these days," but it's clear there's been a huge series of shifts in how people move and spend in cities

@scott I've got some friends that go down the peninsula frequently to visit family and they're so pumped for 30 minute frequencies and 75 min local trains on the weekend! It's transformative (imo) for making Caltrain an attractive option for weekend trips

Buy an ebike and live next to a BART station

In less than an hour I can be at the ocean watching a sunset, or hiking through redwoods

Because getting there is enjoyable I am there more often than anyone I know. This advice will transform your life.

@bryanculbertson I was talking to my parents about how crazy it is to me I spend by far the most time outside and like in nature of anyone they know, even though I live in the smallest apartment in the densest city and don't have a car. BART is incredible!

Honestly I've never heard anyone say tofu sucks or that they hated tofu until I moved to the US (lots of crimes against tofu here, especially by vegans and health food people sorry)

@skinnylatte I had a super similar experience growing up and then going to college and learning tofu was actually super good outside of white American cooking, I am such a huge fan now and wish I'd known about it earlier

After 5 years in the US, I’ve learned that I do not relate whatsoever with American camping food and, will be quite happy if I never have to eat that again.

So now I am searching for what I would do differently. Finally have some hits on Xiaohongshu

signaltap,
@signaltap@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte my boy scouts camping experiences growing up were like so many forms of eggs with some raw vegetable, summer sausage with cheese, and 1-2 times a year the most delicious stew a 14 year old had ever cooked, so I strongly support this take

I told a bike mechanic today that my bike was stolen because a Tesla owner in my building left the garage open, and he said: “that’s because Teslas are 90% smug emissions, even though they’re electric” (it’s a happy story tho, as I got that bike back today, and Tesla owner has since switched to another car)

@skinnylatte I've been camping all of 2 times in the past 2.5 years and this annoying reservation system has played a non-trivial role in that

I feel like I’ve really nailed my color processing workflow.

I only use the Bellini C-41 kit (personal pref to have the bleach and fix separate. I’m sure other kits work well too but I like this one most).

I’m happy with the results. On 35mm, I scan at home with a Plustek scanner (tried every scanning option and hated this the least). For medium format I collect enough rolls to go to Photolaundry in SF where I can rent a Fuji Frontier for $20/h.

skinnylatte, to transit
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

I know transit types love trains, but I LOVE buses. I especially love a good bus network in a dense city, Singapore / Hong Kong / London style (all of them rather similar, for obvious—colonial— reasons)

I can take buses all day long

signaltap,
@signaltap@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte huge bus fan too! In a weird twist of fate/circumstance, my first experiences of independence at age 16 in middle america came riding the bus, and every time I step on a new bus line/get off at a new stop, I still get a bit of the same excitement as I had that first year

This was the only way we were able to access any email for the whole blizzard in Texas in 2021 because the rare signal that came through was so weak... This is a legit asset during disasters that is getting mothballed for what I assume is pretty marginal money, and probably has negative impacts in people in less wealthy nations too

In talking to a lot of people about their food habits and preferences I’ve realized that I don’t really have any element of disgust for any foods. Not sure if it’s a function of my cultural upbringing or exposure. Everything is interesting to me, very few things are disgusting. I also feel I can be uninterested in eating something without being disgusted by it.

All to say, I will defend the Cheetos burrito at Aguachiles El Tamarindo, and the grasshopper tacos at La Oaxaqueña with my last breath

I’ve changed my mind about beans. Not having grown up with them in Southeast Asia, I was never a fan. But learning to cook them the way Mexicans and New Orleans folks cook them really made it for me.

signaltap,
@signaltap@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte I've had a similar relationship to bean dishes, and am very grateful that I got to grow up eating Mexican ones

skinnylatte, to magASEAN
@skinnylatte@hachyderm.io avatar

I don't think this would be true in Southeast Asia just because the industrialization of food is relatively new, and people still have a lot of traditional cooking skills

https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/secret-family-recipes-copied

signaltap,
@signaltap@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte I'm curious about the role assimilation plays in this too. I could imagine the first family member to make one of these recipes didn't have as much experience cooking "typical" food of the US city/region they lived in, and these shelf stable ingredient-based recipes may have been the most accessible way to learn?

signaltap,
@signaltap@mastodon.online avatar

@skinnylatte oh yeah, I think you're definitely right about the difference in industrialized food playing the main role. I'm now curious if there's much of a difference between the US and Mexico, since their industrialization timelines are not quite the same.

I've been inspired to try reading in Spanish more... anyone have any recommendations for stuff someone with a middle school to freshman reading level could start with? I like magical realism, but have only really read translations, and have no idea how approachable it would be with a lower reading level

After experiencing the Valencia center bike lanes just once, I think I will avoid biking through the Mission (or will take Folsom even if it is further from stuff). No amount of convenience is worth that level of stress

signaltap,

My new property manager has started charging for rent payment (!) so I am petty enough to go stand at a bank, request checks, write them and walk two blocks to pay rent just as a matter of principle.

@skinnylatte my old roommate started doing this to our landlord, then one month they were out of town the whole month and went they bit postal on us about his rent not hitting and when they got back and saw the check in their stack of mail, they apologized and started accepting zelle
