I'm adding new profile fields to , so I would like to ask the fediverse about what kinds of contact info one would expect to be able to add to their profile. So far I've seen:

  • Personal website/blog
  • Matrix
  • XMPP
  • Telegram
  • Signal
  • Phone number
  • Twitter
  • Email

I've not yet seen these in fediverse profiles but they are mainstream enough that won't hurt to add:

  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • VKontakte
  • Snapchat
  • Discord

Is there anything I missed?

> All in all quite different from blockchain, don't you think?

These days the 'smart' crypto scams avoid red flag wording in their beautifuly packaged websites and storytelling.

This is the problem with Holochain and similar efforts, such as Safe Network.

In their terminology they ooze Web3 crypto/blockchain vibes, while claiming to be very different.

Thing is their complexity means you can fill your PhD figuring out whether the claim is true or not.

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@Wtebbens @katanova @GuerillaOntologist

If they are really zero-scam works of beauty, their positioning disadvantages these projects and also increases the risk they still adopt shady, scammy stuff.

Because some cryptobro, reading the project positioning, may come aboard directly. Including the types that do the non-ethical opportunistic money-earning schemes.

While in an appeal to crypto-averse folks, the call-to-action is: "No, no blockchain here. After 3 weeks deep-dive you'll see that".

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@Wtebbens @katanova @GuerillaOntologist

In Free Software movement, time is the most precious commodity. There's tons of very valuable FOSS project to contribute to. An abundance of choice.

What the average crypto-averse person (including me) usually does is first 'skim' a new project that someone points out to them. If that project has 'red flag' terminology, then its often an immediate skip.

Holochain has been often advertised to me as "worthy to check out", but I always bounced on wording.

โ€œWebAssembly: A promising technology that is quietly being enshitifiedโ€

@baldur @hasanhaja

Blog came to attention of folks at Bytecode Alliance + Wasmcloud both working with WASI, and - while they had long responses that would take me many toots (+ consent) to repeat - they ended concluding:

> don't think article deserves any more promotion, we see its status as a ragebait rant "async rust is a total failure" isn't a productive start to any conversation. [if there's] any substantial critique in there, let's address it in a way that's not deliberately inflammatory.

smallcircles,

There was an interesting interview of Ben Titzer, co-founder of WebAssembly, where he goes into history, and future outlook. Very broad, and WASI is only addressed near the end..

They are on the Bytecode Alliance zulip and the Wasmcloud slack respectively, for the latter in #webassembly channel. I did not see the full zulip discussion, but the person having it came to wasmcloud slack to state their agreement.

People I refer to are Brooks Townsend and Enzo Nocera. Brooks just shared this Lobsters link on the same thread: https://lobste.rs/s/u1izmf/webassembly_promising_technology_is

TIL about licensing..

https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Copyfarleft

Like the Peer Production license:

> "The peer production license is an example of the Copyfair type of license, in which only other commoners, cooperatives and nonprofits can share and re-use the material, but not commercial entities intent on making profit through the commons without explicit reciprocity."

https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Peer_Production_License

@RL_Dane @interpeer

That is indeed a nice coincidence and quite interesting. I've been musing about the inherent unsustainability of the FOSS movement and - while being proponent of copyleft.. from the toolbox we have - think we need to go next steps in the protection of our works and intended beneficiary availability for the commons.

Thinking about attempting to code an service as a learning project, and to perhaps solve the social lock-in issue of gaming platform profiles that really pisses me off. ๐Ÿค”

I really really don't like , however I'm way too attached to my almost 20 year old profile and like to do video game achievements. Having a unified, federated profile that pulls its data from all the different sources (Steam, PSN, Xbox, RetroAchievements.org and especially GOG) would be neat.

smallcircles,
@smallcircles@social.coop avatar

@Natanox I am not familiar with these game achievement systems, so this may not be usable for you..

I had various fediscussions in the past where some form of federated verified badges were mused about. Verified to avoid fakes. Various times spec was mentioned, which is JSON-LD based.

https://openbadges.org/

Another thought is.. you may get into trouble using official artwork. But that may be an opportunity for artwork communities around badges and get fedi-art alternatives.
