We need unions.

And we also need employee-owned collectives that reject eternal growth, increased production, and shareholder profit as the goals of our labor.

The infinite growth model is destroying our world. We can build alternatives.

A village generally functions as a large family.

A town or neighborhood generally functions as a large village.

But a city does not function like a large town or a large neighborhood. It functions like a collection of competing and cooperating towns and neighborhoods.

I think this is a big reason why capitalism and our car dependent zoning has broken the way cities function. Urban and civil planners and franchise planners, etc. plan out development to optimize cities, not to optimize towns/neighborhoods.

For example, when Walmart plans a new store, they plan to optimize their sales based on service to the larger city, not in service of the town/neighborhood they are opening up in. When city planners plan a new highway, they plan it to optimize transportation in the whole city, not to optimize transportation in the town/neighborhood. Everything is planned to optimize on the city level and the village/town/neighborhood level is sacrificed as a result.

That's why people have to drive 30 minutes to go to a grocery store and 40 minutes to go to church, etc. this is what has killed our communities.

1dalm,
@1dalm@deacon.social avatar

To expand on this, this is also why our "global village" of the #internet fails as a village. Because companies that have taken over the internet didn't treat it like a village, they treat it like city planners treat a city. Optimize everything for the greatest number of users.

Which is part of the interesting thing about #Mastodon and ActivityPub. An individual Mastodon server really does function more like a village than it does a city. It's a small group of people collectively trying to make their little internet community better, and they are more able to police their own users as a result. #ActivityPub is able to function like a more healthy city that supports cooperating and competing towns and villages.

We are building a more independent energy system for 🇪🇺.

2 years ago, we launched to phase out Russian fossil fuels by 2027 by:

✔️ speeding up the deployment of renewables
✔️ diversifying our energy sources
✔️ saving energy

As a result, gas prices are now back around pre-war levels, and our gas storage registered a record high level at the end of the last heating season.

And we have now 1/3 more of renewable energy in our energy mix compared to 2021.

A journey only becomes one when it begins somewhere.

That's why we are grateful to @EDPS for having created and skillfully managed the EUVoice pilot instance.

Your vision has opened new horizons for us and European institutions.

Our new instance will only foster our engagement with this truly amazing community and be a reference for any institution interested in embracing the fediverse and open alternatives.

@EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu avatar

Hi @nick! Thank you for your questions! Our old instance was created, hosted and managed by @EDPS as part of a pilot project for a Mastodon server. As the pilot project was coming to an end, we decided to build on its success by setting a permanent instance, ensuring the continued and uninterrupted presence of our institution on Mastodon. The new instance is hosted and managed by the European Commission and has no expiry date.

Part of my frustration with and one of the things I find baffling giving everything else in it: the lack of tools for backpressure.

Backpressure is fundamental in building reliable distributed systems (c.f., Notes on Distributed Systems for Young Bloods). From a C2S perspective I get why it wouldn't need to be specified, but from a S2S federated protocol perspective its absence is frustrating.

All that it says is to take care not to overwhelm others and a bit on rate limits

jenniferplusplus,
@jenniferplusplus@hachyderm.io avatar

@hrefna yes.

But I also want state convergence. No matter what, different hosts are going to wind up with different views of the state of the graph. Why are there no mechanisms to detect that and enable convergence?

julian,
@julian@community.nodebb.org avatar

@jenniferplusplus:

I want a mechanism to determine if two party's view of a collection are equivalent. I want to be able to query if an object is contained in a collection without enumerating the whole collection. I want a mechanism to request re-delivery or maybe failed delivery notifications.

For what it's worth, these are all goals that would align well with the interests of a broad set of implementors. I make a little noise now and again about the SWICG forum task force, but directly addressing some of these concerns would definitely be on our radar.

Current focus is on aligning on a common object type for higher level collections (the context), but I'm thinking that Collection (ordered, ideally) would be the best fit and also allow for future use cases like you mentioned earlier.

You have the ideas, we might be able to supply the coordination...

At the last ForumWG meeting, we discussed at length about Article vs. Note, and whether there was a desire to expand usage of as:Article. You can review those minutes here.

One of the action items that came out was to collate the state of current implementations. Unfortunately, outside of implementations that federate non-textual content (e.g. Pixelfed Stories, Mobilizon Events, etc.), the majority of implementors just use as:Note, which is not surprising given Mastodon's treatment of non-Note objects.

You can see the results of the summary here.

What is less clear is whether there is pent-up demand for use of a different data type for more richly forrmatted content. @mikedev and @jupiter_rowland provided some very illuminating history behind previous attempts to use as:Article, but importantly it seems that Mastodon (via @renchap) may be open to supporting this in some form as well.

While Mastodon has every reason to display as:Note as it sees fit, I'd like to hopefully address the undue influence towards using it especially in instances where as:Article were more appropriate. Mike (upthread) suggested a compromise:

  • that as:Note be reserved for content with attachments (images or otherwise), perhaps with a limited subset of html
  • and as:Article be used for content with a richer set of html (e.g. tables), and including the ability to display inline images

I explicitly did not specify that Note was for shorter content and Article for longer, because there exist plenty of examples of the reverse.

Does anybody see potential complications from such an arrangement?
