I shouldn't have to drop into bcdedit to get windows to tell me that the reason it's stuck in a recovery boot loop (with no logging) is that ntoskrnl.exe is missing.

something went wrong :( is about as useful as microsoft get these days.

I have been getting up around 10.30am. This morning I had been for a run and had breakfast by 7.30. The consequence of this is that by 11am I am hungry again. What should I eat? Another breakfast?

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@purplepadma if I'm still hungry around 11 I start seriously considering popping up the road for pastries. Which really doesn't help the waistline!

My standing charge for electricity is now £190 a year! Before any usage. That's really concerning.

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@CenturyAvocado now wondering if one could use an EV as an energy transport device, and if the cost of charging at a public charger would offset the grid standing charge. Mind you, having to go out every day to "buy electricity" would a tad inconvenient ..

Just invented the most insane device.
When anticheat measures in games are so complex and you want a web service to press a key in a game.. SendKeys don't work, attempting to trigger DirectInput also doesn't work.. open up a keyboard and wire onto the required key and connect a WiFi IoT relay to it :D

Can you not just stick a Pi into gadget mode and have it pretend to be a keyboard?

manufacturing a single tangara with a full size usb b connector instead of usb c, then gaslighting whoever receives it

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@jacqueline it that USB B <= 2.0, or the weird 3.0 one with the extra excrescence sticking out the top?

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@jacqueline having said that, I have a QNAP disk enclosure with a USB c socket and it feels incredibly flimsy on a piece of kit that big - I'd actually much prefer full-size B, even with the excrescence!

Social bookmarking is a novel use case for and I’m super excited about it. I heckin’ love links and lists! I wanna use them for everything.

Things like are cool, but it’s not what I want. I just wanna link the thing. Books, films, podcasts, articles, songs.., they’re all just resource recommendations which can be encapsulated by links.

Thanks to @raffomania and @eb for the indirect prompts leading to this article mixing their ideas with my own.

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@erlend @raffomania @eb I know you said in the article that you didn't even really want to search, but I do think human-driven link curation may be one solution to the declining quality of general web search results in this age of out-of-control SEO & AI.

I can’t help feeling that giving some of my grandkids a BBC micro, and cassette player, and the BASIC manual would help them learn so much. Sadly I’d have to lock them in a sealed room for a year as well, they would get so bored these days I bet. They just don’t appreciate quite how much happens behind the scenes on their gadgets. The layers and layers of code and hardware. Shame…

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@revk I guess each generation "tinkers" at a different level. I think my grandfather and uncle couldn't understand why I was fiddling with software instead of breadboarding circuits with discrete components.

That having been said, mobile devices are significantly more locked down than any previous platform in history. Without a "real computer", that may impose a fairly solid restriction on what can be learned :(

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@RogerBW @revk perhaps the solution is bring the technology "full circle", so to speak. My nieces are still interested in physical objects and the outside world .. perhaps showing them "solarpunk" uses of tech, e.g. solar generation, automated plant watering systems, etc might trigger an interest?

What insanity is this. At my Grandad's house a problem with the boiler always running and the radiators being on even when the weather is warm has bugged me. The thermostat is not demanding heat yet the boiler runs and radiators are on.
Today I took everything to bits. Turns out the boiler is a heating only boiler, no hot water output.. The hot water demand is wired into the only input for heating.. so if water tank needs heating - the radiators come on too.
..1/2

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@CenturyAvocado what's the zone valve arrangement? Heat-only boilers were standard until combis became a thing about 25 years ago. Normally there's a diverter valve or pair of zone valves, with the logic effectively implemented in the wiring centre (or whatever horror passes for it.)

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@CenturyAvocado What make? Our new Veissman is heat-only, but has an optional terminal to (I think) signal that the demand is actually HW demand. I assume it then temporarily changes the flow temperature, allowing you to have a lower normal flow temp without getting legionnella.. The re-wiring to allow this is still "in progress" ..

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@CenturyAvocado possible it's just using the same panel + manual as the combi version? The viessmann manuals are crap for that sort of thing, mentioning options you don't have, etc, etc :(

Or you could make your basic shopping page...just work?

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@proactiveservices doesn't make a lot of sense as UTF-8 is an encoding, not a character set, but I'd interpret it mean Unicode, otherwise they'd just have written ASCII or latin-1, surely? And Unicode should cover most things. But that's not what they meant, though..

Sometimes perfectly stable and working software is suddenly called "legacy" with a negative connotation just because someone tries to make up a justification to use a yet unproven ShinyNewThing in a project. #SarcasmButOnlyHalf

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@jwildeboer it has become a bit of a geek snark term as well (possibly separate from the tech-hipster usage) - my niche ISP refers to IPv4 as "legacy", and I noticed NixOS referring to "legacy" distributions the other day (meaning Debian, Ubuntu, Redhat, Fedora, and Arch!)

srtcd424,
@srtcd424@mas.to avatar

@jwildeboer and then a year or two later someone can introduce an exciting new product to manage the problems created by ShinyNewThing :)
