Hello, it's @paul here, testing out snac2

Both accounts will be in use, but follow me on either... why not!

I've made some stuff like these things below:
https://codeberg.org/pswilde/note - a simple pastebin (inspired by bin)
https://codeberg.org/pswilde/nemini - a gemini server
https://pswilde.codeberg.page/threadlogging_docs/threadlogging.html - threadlogging library for #Nim
https://codeberg.org/pswilde/gts_emoji_importer - an emoji importer for GoToSocial
https://codeberg.org/pswilde/fedi_auth - a basic fediverse authentication library for #Nim

I've also made a cool website for wholesome responses to error codes. Check it out here: https://errors.notnull.space

I make no apologies for using H2G2 puns. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Well, that was fun - thought I'd do a little filesystem cleansing and ended up accidentally (I did not check my work, tut tut tut) removed fedi VM ( I thought it was on a different disk, whoops!) - joy!

are available of course and restoring now. being the easiest to restore so that's back online first! I've lost today, but that's OK I've been pretty quiet!

So Hyprland is buggy, we knew this. So I can't use it at the moment. So I tried out qtile wayland again. And while it's stable, it is still so far away.

What's a guy gotta do to get a stable, fully functional, wayland compositor that isn't Sway?

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@thelinuxcast I've tried to test so many TWMs in Wayland, and just keep hitting problems

nothing, NOTHING, works properly in any of them
The best hope we have is river (with river-bsp-layout) I think, but even then things aren't quite right

no decent keyboard daemon's either, I cannot do without sxhkd. swhkd is close, but not quite right still.

I don't need bling, so X with bspwm and sxhkd is perfect for me. Want me to switch to Wayland? Make bspwm and sxhkd clones (not swhkd) and we'll talk 🙃

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@lhp @thelinuxcast I appreciate that, and it doesn't make much sense I agree. I was probably over simplifying what I meant. To put it another way, of all the wayland twms, the key command handlers aren't quite as useful (to me) as sxhkd. I am probably an edge case I guess, I'm not sure many people use as many sxhkd "chords" as I do, but hey - that's half the fun!

For example, I have a command $mod + c ; b ; s, which, to put in a "mode" based config would mean I'd have to have a mode "c" (change), which has a nested mode "b" (background) with a final key command "s" (space), which is a lot of work to just get a new space based background image from unsplash.

Anyway, x still works, it does what I need, and there's no reason to switch for me yet.

Big catastrophy at work today, one of our postgres clusters completely went down, some kind of problem with the disk it seems, so the db corrupted, I don't know well enough how to eventually fix it since it seems like it was trying to recover and then just segfaulted every time it tried, and no start.

So in the end we had to recover from a backup from midnight, and stuff is running, it's just annoying having to reimport everything.

And I'm still at work 1 1/2 hour after I should have finished.

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@sotolf Ouch. Not a nice situation.

Business Site A requests change to system regarding Business Site B
It would be logical to assume Site A has communicated with Site B about this... right? RIGHT!?

I'm having one of those days where it seems everyone is irritating me

Oh yeah... thanks client trying to ring me... leaving a voicemail saying they're trying to log into someone else's computer as the other person and even including the other person's password in the voicemail... nice

Do you have a blog at Wordpress.com? Congrats! You will soon be feeding all your content to an AI, unless you opt-out. Same with Tumblr! (Why I self-host, reason ) Source: https://www.404media.co/tumblr-and-wordpress-to-sell-users-data-to-train-ai-tools/ and many more

UPDATE: Seems it already happened. Content from 2014-2023 has already been shared. So your opt-out will just be honoured going forward. If and how already sent content will be handled by the receiving 3rd party after you opt-out remains a mystery

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@jwildeboer Sometimes a news article comes up that vindicates me on things I said we should be concerned about years ago

I'll send this link to my friends, they may even start listening to me but probably not.

After Elon Musk insists that you can't set up a new Windows PC without a Microsoft account, Community Notes fact-checks him, twice. And he's not happy about it. https://www.pcmag.com/news/elon-musk-picks-another-fight-this-time-with-xs-own-community-notes-feature

paul,

@PCMag what a prat!

I literally set up PCs with Windows 11 and no MS account daily because I do not have access to the customers MS account details.

Also, Elon, you of all people don't get to talk about how algorithms are bad

I need to get back into listening to podcasts, I'll start doing this next week whilst flying next weekend.

Any good ones people recommend?

My list at present is:

  • The WAN Show
  • The Linux Cast
  • The Linux Experiment's Linux and Open Source News podcast
  • Tech Over Tea
  • Waveform - MKBHD's podcast
paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@orbitalmartian

A few different genres to the ones you mentioned, but a few of my common listens are:

99% invisible
No such thing as a fish
The Infinite Monkey Cage

Is there any way to get Codeberg to display dates in 24-hour time?

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@amin I've just run through my own Codeberg account and my self-hosted Forgejo instance so I can check admin settings and can't see any option for it!

Maybe @Codeberg or @forgejo can help out.

tulpa, to random
@tulpa@fosstodon.org avatar

I can remember a 4-word passphrase. But 6 words usually defeats me.

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@tulpa @Linux_in_a_Bit I use a full sentence/line from a song or poem or something and then take the first letter of each word to create a decently long, but random looking, password.

Increase entropy by sometimes using the first few letters of a word instead of just the first, add some garnish by replacing some characters with numbers/symbols, then season with a sprinkling to capitalisation and I think it gets to a pretty good place, which is also easy to remember

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@tulpa @tulpa @Linux_in_a_Bit I feel I should, but really I shouldn't, mention that using the main "hook" line of a song or song title is a really bad idea for this...

Oh, facepalm moment, I just realised that when people talking about rescue dogs they don't mean dogs that are trained to rescue people on the mountains and stuff, but they are dogs from a shelter, now I feel kind of stupid :p

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@sotolf Easy mistake to make!

I suppose you could use "Lifesaving dog" for a dog that rescues people, but I call both of them "rescue dogs" as, normally, it's clear from the context (but not always)

What do we say to users who upload gigabytes of apparently random data, naming the files "500M.bin, 1000M.bin ..., 8000M.bin"

"Thank you for being an awesome member of our community"? Better proposals welcome.

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@Codeberg push a few extra random bytes into the the files so they are unable to push to the repo without pulling and changes, or push --force which would push the entire file again cos git can't diff binarys 😄

Or, ask them nicely not to do it. Up to you!

LMAOOO this note for Bluesky self-hosting

> Initially to join the network you'll need to join the AT Protocol PDS Admins Discord and register the hostname of your PDS.

https://github.com/bluesky-social/pds

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@pixel @ErikUden Kinda like the thought that some poor soul may be putting all these instance names in Google Sheets or something that each other instance is then hard coded to lookup and check against before allowing federation with that other instance.

Mojeek, to random
@Mojeek@mastodon.social avatar

woah, ok, explains some things 🤓

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@Mojeek fun fact: the end few words of Google's staff handbook did indeed say "don't be evil"

however, it was missing punctuation, the full except said "if you have concerns about invading people's privacy, don't, be evil."

this is, to the best of my knowledge, untrue... but believable right?!

paul, to random
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

I don't see much about it on the fedi.... but man I love

Just did a server migration to a new host so it can uograde to the latest version and it took about 10 minutes (including actual 3cx installation time) with only about 2 minutes downtime. Amazing.

Try doing that with a closed cloud based popular phone system, I dare you!

paul, to firefox
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

In light of news, I guess the only way forward is to reluctantly use a decent Chromium (or )) based browser with a custom user-agent string eh?

I'd love to know @Vivaldi 's opinion on if AI is the future for browser clients (I'm praying it's a firm "no" 🤞🤞)

I suspect will be safe for a long time yet though

I'm going to try and set up Tailscale DNS to point at my pihole, so I can have pihole on my phone every where.

paul,
@paul@snac.notnull.space avatar

@btp I did start doing this and had pihole set as DNS for the entire head/tailscale network, but fair warning in my experience it absolutely hammered the phone battery... I guess because of the consistent DNS requests over a secure VPN

In the end, I have a exit-node set up that solely uses the pihole for DNS and switch to it on mobile when I want it.

I'm not using ZFS so we'll have to see how that goes... but maybe as a single user instance it will survive ok-ish
