In an age when most folks seem to have increasingly short attention spans - I am characteristically headed in the opposite direction, engrossed in writing music that unfolds over longer and longer time spans.

My most ambitious project in that general direction so far was THE BRIDGE, which in its 15 movements unfolding over more than an hour, attempted to capture the sweep and breadth of Hart Crane's epic poem.

Any time period, any style -- I'm interested in seeing different ways of combining these forces, and studying the nuts and bolts of #orchestration.

When I was 16 or so, the Rollingstones were one of my favorite bands. Satanic Majesties Request, Beggars Banquet and Sticky Fingers were great and got played until they wore out the needle. And, then I went off into my classical world - and never heard any of their subsequent albums - until just now, out of curiosity, listening to Hackney Diamonds. Wow, they’ve still got it!

Now and then, I listen to some contemporary rock band - and think, meh! I guess I’ve got a 1960s bias.

Happy birthday, Dmitri Shostakovich! His high art represents what Russia could and should be. Unfortunately, now we see, as with Germany in the last century, how the same culture that can produce such extraordinary art, can also be butchers and murderers of innocents. May that aspect of the Russian soul that Shostakovich represents prevail.
