Oooh.... Sat 6th April I could do Luca (the oh-very-much-not-a-queer-film-the-creators-said-so film, not a guy) and Speed (the Keanu Reeves film, not the drug) at the local cinema...

And then Sunday will be Mika...

@penwing Ah 'Speed' the runner up in the "best bus in a supporting role" category 1994 ;-)

Okay, sure, let's do this. "nomadic identity"

  1. No one has ever even come close to explaining how using a did: uri is supposed to work
  2. Even assuming it works, no one can explain how it's different than oidc
  3. Even assuming it was different, what happens when I need to find a responsible adult to come collect an asshole in my mentions?

@mikedev Have you looked at the previous attempt to do this - the .tel domain ? I don't recall exactly why it failed (obsession with e164s I think) - but there may be lessons there.

Reading @Patricia 's recent small rant on corporate security made me think about how lucky we were with the people we got to talk on https://distributedfutu.re .

I'm very proud of what we did there, even if it didn't fit the commercial podcast model.

Have a listen to literally any episode and I promise you will learn something - every one contained an 'aah haa' moment for me.

I keep wondering if I should do something to repackage the archive to make it more accessible - highlights or editing or something - but I still feel it works as is. Thoughts welcome....

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

Watch this satellite obliterate the Kuiper Belt object moving through this set of images.

The dumb satellite is so bright that our auto-detect software threw out the whole stack, because it destroyed the average brightness.

It pisses me off to no end that my taxpayer-funded telescope time is now less and less effective because of one for-profit private company.

(P.S. software dudes: please don't try to mansplain workarounds, believe me, a LOT of astronomers are working hard on this)

A gif of a Kuiper Belt object slowly moving across a set of images. It just looks like a fuzzy dot. Toward the end of the sequence, there's a super bright diagonal line that covers up the moving dot - that was a satellite.

I'm delighted to find another 'usefully wrong' person.

I have a small cadre of people I follow whose opinions are always wrong.

Any issue I'm not sure about I wait for one of these 4 or 5 folks to chime in on it and that helps me clarify my thinking on a tricky topic.

Find yours, they are an absolute godsend in these busy times.

Another 3 capital day yesterday Lunch in London. Tea in Brussels. Bed in Berlin.
The railways behaved themselves and I got quite a bit of work done.
It takes longer than flying, but it is much less stressful and reasonably productive.

I missed out on seeing the hanging railway at Wuppertal
whizz past because of a diversion, "animals on the line". Hopefully not elephants.

Walking to and from the station at the beginning and end is great.

This article is a textbook example of confusing correlation (people in ethnically diverse areas charged more for car insurance) with causation (they're charged more because of their ethnicity).

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-68349396

I've worked in motor insurance for a long time and the things that have a big effect are:

Age
No claims bonus
Postcode

Other things matter (and gender used to, before it was banned), but those are the main ones.

steely_glint,
@steely_glint@chaos.social avatar

@pwaring @pwaring

A problem comes when you throw 20 years of data and bad practice into training an AI and the resulting model obscures the difference between correlation and causation.

Well, that's a surprise.
In the last 24 hours our solar panels generated as much electricity as we consumed - and that includes charging the EV.

In February! In the UK !

Admittedly it was an unseasonably sunny day, but I hadn't expected to break even for months.

Can someone here explain why heatpumps are the new hotness? (Sorry.) Despite the hype, all I can discern is that they are just air conditioners that can pump in the other direction ("reverse cycle"), and the thermodynamics is poorly explained in the popular literature. Why are they suddenly the thing that can save the world? What am I missing?

My degree is in physics. I can handle the truth.

Thank you.

steely_glint,
@steely_glint@chaos.social avatar

@landley @Muellers_Kabinett @parsingphase @robpike although, perhaps ‘warmness’ would be more accurate, since they don’t get to as high a temperature as a gas fired heater, yet.

steely_glint,
@steely_glint@chaos.social avatar

@landley @Muellers_Kabinett @parsingphase @robpike The issue (as I understand it) is that existing houses have heating systems (e.g. radiators in the UK) that are spec'd for hot water at 65c+ which allows for smaller areas and narrower pipes. Current Heatpumps don't hit that so may not be suitable for retrofitting into older houses with high heat losses.

However there are newer ones (using propane as the exchange medium) that hopefully will.

steely_glint,
@steely_glint@chaos.social avatar

@Muellers_Kabinett @parsingphase @robpike

Looks like that is changing, which is interesting because my house has small bore pipes to the undersized radiators.
We will try your test over the next few days...
