If a program says it wants CUDA 10 can I get away with installing CUDA 12 or does CUDA 10 mean "CUDA 10 exactly"

It's specifically asking for "cudart64_101.dll"

@mcc they also cause Linux crashes pretty regularly. I've come to regret switching my main desktop to an nVidia card, just because I wanted to tinker with 3D stuff every now and then and everyone said nVidia was much better supported.

If there's one thing about me, I'm gonna type that old command name, no matter how long I've known about better newer alternatives. wget, tcpdump, iwconfig, screen, ls, grep. I finally started typing ip instead of ifconfig and route habitually a year or two ago, because it's shorter and does everything.

@fasterthanlime "hydration" in reference to a website makes me a bit nauseous. I assume that's the deal here, they built a bunch of client-side garbage in JavaScript and then fetch some data via JSON or GraphQL or whatever complicated job security system they're using to actually make it readable to a human...and that part broke (as expected, it's probably a big pile of uncategorized shit in MongoDB). I might be projecting here, but...symptoms fit.

@caseynewton the social networks aren't going to do anything about it. They'll pretend to care about it as cover for collecting and selling more data about their users to government and surveillance companies, maybe suggest some legislation to their pet politicians to that effect with a name like "Protecting Our Children In the Digital Commons", pat themselves on the back and get back to the business of making money. And, OpenAI will be both a buyer and seller of that data.

Today I saw a guy reuse an amazon bubble shipping envelope to insulate his water bottle. He rolled it around the outside of the bottle and secured it with a pair of rubber bands.

I really like that creative reuse. It's very clever.

One of my classmates is applying for colleges, and she was complaining that she got waitlisted for UCLA. "It's unfair," she said. "I should be allowed in through legacy admissions. My grandpa and dad went to UCLA."

I said I thought the idea of legacy admissions is unfair. She agreed that they kind of are, but said it's still wrong of UCLA to not let her in when her dad and grandpa went there.

@nyquildotorg second and third ones are definitely shoegaze-ish. The first is sort of math rock without any math. It feels unfinished, just a nice-sounding riff repeated forever, making it harder to categorize...it could have gone in a few directions, but stayed put without ever deciding what kind of song it should be.

@anze3db Scaleway is easy to buy from, but I'm not necessarily recommending them. I've had a variety of technical issues that were more annoying than usual. I don't hate them and haven't been annoyed enough to find an alternative for our European mirrors, but they could be better.

@Gargron giving something away for free somehow brings out the absolute most entitled, awful, people on the planet. That subset of users is the reason I question my involvement in Open Source software every day. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

@grimalkina the language I plan to spend some time with if I ever find myself having the free time for that kind of learning is Forth. Specifically, Forth on tiny machines like 8-bit micros, but Forth in general seems really interesting and unlike anything else I know.

@grimalkina lol, I just mean old 8-bits, like Commodore 64, 128, Plus/4, or the Apple II series. I also have a couple of PCjr computers. But, Forth can also work on microcontrollers, which are real tiny, both physically and in terms of specs. e.g. https://arduino-forth.com/

@mjgardner it's a bit late to be pretending there is a future for humans in limitless exploitation. I'm not going to argue about it, though. If you've made it this far with beliefs this detached from observable reality, it won't be fixed by a few hundred characters from a stranger. But, pretending wholesale destruction of the ecosystem humans require to live is a humanist position is absurd.
