tannat,

@jwilker @bookstodon Haha my recs tend to be a little bit better (at least in the same genre), but they really like to recommend books to buy that I've already bought.

I know I post a lot of cute photos of . I don't want to give you the impression I'm the best mum ever.
I'll be honest: The transition to having Apri around has been quite a challenge for me. Like, I didn't know that post-cat-adoption blues is a THING. And boy do I have it bad.
I play up to 2-3 hours a day with her, and even that's not enough. And then there's the random play bites and ambushes, which I know...

tannat,

@liztai You could get another kitten?

Otherwise she'll probably mostly grow out of it. Eventually.

tannat,

@liztai They'll never completely grow out of it, and it depends highly on the individual cat, but maybe by 2?

I wouldn't want you to take on more than you can handle, but it can be surprising how much of a difference having a feline distraction can make with some cats.

Like, furry ball of destruction getting into everything to, well, just a cat. But it depends on the cat and how bored they are.

tannat,

@liztai @IPEdmonton That's fair!

An alternative might be to look into some interactive toys and just making sure she has cat friendly activities around the place (like a cat tree next to a window).

And if she's biting you, try not to play using your hands (just play with toys).

tannat,

@liztai @IPEdmonton so if you can, you can ignore her to teach her not to do that, or try to redirect her attention. But it's hard.

This is my latest I started last weekend. My cousin is throwing herself a 60th birthday party blast next month and I’m making her a long, wide rectangular shawl/wrap in a cozy Berroco wool.

I hate deadline knitting. Party is in 6 weeks and I finished 1/5th of it in less than a week. As long as I keep on this pace I should make it with blocking time to spare. @knitting

tannat,

@judisohn @knitting Good luck, it looks lovely!

@AimeeMaroux @bookstodon Yes, I've heard it can be hard to wean yourself off of it. This is why I find it frustrating when authors who didn't start there remove their books from other platforms in order to participate (an instance of this prompted this toot).

I know I won't ever make a difference to their bottom line but it still sucks to be told that they don't want me to read their books.

tannat,

@johnhowesauthor @bookstodon Sure, but if you start broad and get me to buy your book in the first place but then remove my ability to buy future books, I get to be salty, no?

tannat,

@paul_e_cooley @bookstodon This toot was prompted by someone who had their work available more broadly and removed it so that I can't support them by buying the sequel or by recommending it to others. I'm never going to buy Kindle.

I'm sure they don't care, and it sounds like you wouldn't either, but it sucks to be told an author doesn't want you to read their books. That's what I'm complaining about.

tannat,

@AimeeMaroux @bookstodon Really? I've seen it multiple times, and even with some more traditionally published authors. Hence the grumbling.

Sometimes they come back after a bit.

It's interesting how many sources around the Internet claim that the term "Drink the Kool-Aid" (as in unwise groupthink) refers to San Francisco and LSD. Or to the novel "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test."

It does not. It refers to the Jonestown Massacre of
1978 in Guyana, where almost 1000 followers of Jim Jones voluntarily (or in some cases, involuntarily) committed mass suicide by drinking Kool-Aid laced with cyanide. (And yes, it's true that technically the brand was "Flavor Aid", but nobody has ever said "Drink the Flavor Aid" in these contexts, as far as I know!)

tannat,

@lauren Wait, really? I never really knew the details but I always knew it referred to the poisonings.

tannat,

@theotherotherone @ericsfraga @agt @bookstodon You can always side load the Kobo using a computer and Adobe Digital Editions or Calibre. It just needs to be an epub (pdf is possible IIRC but sucks).

tannat,

@peachfront @agt @bookstodon I have to disagree. Tablets are intolerable for reading novels due to their shorter battery life and backlighting. For graphic novels and some non fiction works, sure, but for novels? No thanks. Even indoors the glare off the screen can be tiring.

I'll be sticking to e-ink ereaders for a while yet.

tannat,

@theotherotherone @ericsfraga @agt @bookstodon That is a DRM problem, not a format problem. Files without DRM are easily transferred.

theotherotherone, (edited ) to books

The rule is are better than based on them. I think they accomplish different things though: books have more detail, movies can show what you may have missed

I think most books are better, but I have a theory that and DO adapt well. Simply, less material to adapt means they can add more depth to what is there. A great example is Wizard of Oz. I've read the book - it's good, not great. The movie is, especially for its time, amazing

@movies @bookstodon

tannat,

@theotherotherone @thomnottom @movies @bookstodon I'd argue that The Princess Bride is an example that breaks the rule: the movie is better than the book.

@ginnyotte @Elenyafinwe @knitting This sounds like a good idea to try, but how do small circular needles help?

Private
tannat,

@theotherotherone @bookstodon Hmm...I have been guilty of not posting about books I didn't like because I was afraid of dealing with people who liked the book.

Maybe we could normalize the use of a hashtag for it though. Sometimes it's nice to find others who had a similar bad reading experience.

Suggestions for something catchy, anyone?

tannat,

@JohnDA @theotherotherone @bookstodon Yes, sometimes the things people complain about are things that I'd probably like.

When looking up reviews, I usually look at 4-5 stars and 1-2 stars for contrast. Basically, what are the things people liked and what are the things people didn't like.

tannat,

@theotherotherone @JohnDA @bookstodon I feel that's legit when reviewing for online sellers but less helpful in a book review.

tannat,

@jaymy @JohnDA @theotherotherone @bookstodon Oh I meant when I'm trying to figure out if a book will interest me, especially if I'm buying it as opposed to getting it from the library.

tannat,

@jaymy @JohnDA @theotherotherone @bookstodon Fair enough!

Shall we use the hash tag? Or something more innocuous like ?

tannat,

@theotherotherone @JohnDA @jaymy @bookstodon Yeah I wasn't sure how to set one up tbh.

POV: You're trying to decide if you can get away with just stopping the sleeve here because omg the tedium 😩

@knitting

tannat,

@thegiddystitcher @knitting If it's not a cardigan, I generally prefer 3/4 length sleeves.
