…while Green Party Leader David Coon downplays COVID by choosing not to do the simplest possible thing: wearing a mask… These people are exhausting.

Drawing this time. My first year fine arts sculpture professor, the late Tom Henderson, lived in this house in Aulac, New Brunswick, just a few minutes from the Nova Scotia border and Fort Beauséjour National Historic Site, just off the road to Prince Edward Island. Typical late-19th/early-20th century home around here. Stillman & Birn hardcover sketchbook. 2B Pencil, Carbonpen, Copic markers. 2018.

it’s 8°C (46°F) outside right now (mid-day), at 45.9°N.

on November 16th.

it’s t-shirt weather; maybe a light sweater or windbreaker. and it’s really nice.

and it scares the shit out of me.

Followed the hashtag for a while. No more.

Mostly complaints about how SNW/Picard/Discovery/etc. isn’t perfect or servicing their highly specific (and entirely unreasonable/mutually exclusive) demands.

Fandom — Trek, STAR WARS, anything, really — has just gotten exhausting. I’ll stick to podcasts like Vulcan Hello (w @blankbaby & @jsnell), because they’re smart and they enjoy the shows.

Life’s better when you let yourself enjoy things, you know?

Hey, kids; remember — little need to use URL shortening services here.

• character limits are generally sufficient
• they obfuscate the link (which the security- & privacy-conscious will avoid)
• they add an unnecessary 3rd-party point of failure
• that 3rd party can track/spy on traffic
• some, like those ending in .ly, are dependent on countries (e.g. Libya) with regimes with questionable political motives for tracking/filtering traffic

been visiting a family member in hospital recently, and I can assure you that the healthcare profession is done taking covid seriously. I was the only masked person I saw. No doctors, nurses, staff, or patients I saw wore masks of any kind.

discussing things with a nurse, she said she’d gotten covid working in a nursing home; I said I’ve never had it. “You’ve been lucky”, she said.

“No,” I said, pointing to my 3M Aura 9205+ N95, “I’ve been careful.”

the fuck is it with these people?

Alas.

It’s so gd click-happy. Wildly inefficient. Nothing’s ever in the same place twice. It remembers everything I don’t care about; forgets everything I’d like it to remember.

More artwork from my archives. More of a drawing this time, from 2018, in a small Stillman & Birn mixed-media sketchbook. Pencil, fountain pen, Copic markers. People waiting at a bus stop in downtown Montréal, dans le quartier latin, dressed for a mild, Canadian winter day. The woman in the centre of the composition was watching me, unconcerned but mildly curious, as I took their photo.

The 2000 film The Beach (d. Danny Boyle) has a bit where 3 minor characters are attacked by a shark while fishing. 2 die outright; one, badly wounded, lingers.

Their remote, utopian community initially comes together to help, but turns resentful when forced to endure the survivor’s ongoing cries of suffering. First he’s segregated. Finally, he’s smothered, for everyone else’s benefit.

Anyway, this feels like a metaphor for how society’s chosen to handle long COVID.

a) to hell with Adobe
b) I love how instead of yanking old media/apps I’ve paid for, Apple has, in contrast, upgraded old movies from SD > HD, and SDR > HDR — at no cost. Including titles that were digital downloads that came as codes redeemed from DVDs (in other words, not even purchased from Apple).

Someone pointed out on a podcast recently that in the metric system, there are units — metres, grams, litres, etc. — and that all multi-unit prefixes are Greek (deca, kilo, mega) while all sub-unit prefixes (deci, centi, milli) are Latin. (Yes, since 1935 there have been exceptions… still.)

I’ve been using the metric system since I was 6 and never noticed this.

@StillIRise1963 I resisted MSM conspiracies for years.

Yes, I had the once-you-see-how-innacurate-stories-in-your-field-are experience, but that wasn’t enough.

Relentless climate-change both-sides-ism and dutiful, political stenography when Public Health was spouting inconsistent, illogical nonsense at the start of the pandemic — and now seeing the leader of the opposition gets nothing but uncritical press while supporting fascists (but our PM can do nothing right)?

I’m out.
