I can't figure out if mastodon is a high context culture or not. People seem to be expected to give long introductions and do a lot of identity/positionality disclosure, but also an enormous reply guy culture which is defined by low context drive-by. Conversational turn-taking is extremely low compared to other platforms ime, but depth-seeking is high. What an interesting mix.
*obviously, these experiences are all situated within my own network effects, and I'm not well networked here.
I think part of it is that the context is expected around the person and not the post, for whatever reason, people want to know everything about you and what you stand for, what your opinions are, what led you to some decision or path, but within actual conversation that falls away.
Okay everyone, here I am once again asking a seemingly meaningless question:
Would you rather prefer a blog's RSS feed if it contained only the summary of all posts, or the full text but only the 10 most recent posts?
(I have learned from personal experience that every RSS reader I can try will choke on a feed file that's several tens of MB in size if I run full text all posts)
Anyone know roughly how far a UHF (440) signal can travel, 40W of power, end-fed half-wave vertical mounted above the metal roof of a 1-story house? We're on the city limits so there's not much obstruction.
I'm not looking for exact answers, I'm just trying to calculate if 40-50 watts of power is enough to reach the neighboring (30 miles) city.
For bonus points: assume I'm on a 5W HT. You think there's enough rx gain to even hear an HT 30 miles away? Or would I have to bounce through the 50W tx in my car as an amplifier to even try that.
this is a super cool protocol and i really need to get into it but the naming alone is great https://cats.radio/
cats packets are composed of whiskers that are connected to the internet via the felinet
@doskel Unfortunately, like, it's cool but I think I see two main issues with it.
AFSK over FM is inefficient but it allows any commodity radio to be used for APRS. Direct FSK means you now need a USB capable transmitter or one with an exposed data port, something that's much more rare. You ever used APRSDroid, The Cable™️, and a Baofeng with VOX enabled?
It's going to end up causing a split-brain if it takes off. It'll never supplant APRS, so we'll have two separate, incompatible protocols to serve the same purpose in an endless struggle to find a decisively superior one. Just like echolink and all-star.
What about a print on demand service for QSL cards that replaces the bureau?
And do we have enough engaged, technically adept, and interesting hams out here in this Fedi space to put together a monthly web magazine of sorts filled with the stuff that we want to read?
I know there was talk before. I'm wondering if we really need to wait for the big org to fail before we start.
@doskel this is why I like Ruff as my linter. It'll generate all sorts of warnings for Python language features that you'd never think to use unless you saw them, and once you use them you ask why Python even exists. 😆
Yes, python pulled a JavaScript and if you give it a <list> not in <list> it actually checks each item individually instead of treating it like a sublist.
The city I live in has a decent digi like... 8-10 miles north but nothing local (read: nothing I can hit with an HT)
My VHF rig has two settings: 5W and 45W
Should I set myself up as a WIDE1? I don't quite know where the boundary lies between "if there's a gap in coverage, fill it" and "that'll just cause more APRS congestion"
Well, my new glasses are probably set to arrive Monday. Despite the fact that they are already in the state.
I have no clue how, but every single USPS package that I order, always gets to the local post office on Sunday, and therefore gets delayed a day. Why even.
This is an AnyTone 578UVIII PLUS. It's currently off. The activity light is blue. That's not ever described in the manual. That light goes cyan when receiving DMR, but not pure blue.
Furthermore, it only does this like a minute after I start the car. Only if the car has been idle for some time.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? This isn't documented, like, anywhere. It's one of those things where you search for it and it sounds like you're the only person in the world with the problem.
@mike_k Radio's off. I don't think it would be pairing anything while out cold..

You're not 100% off though, those are bluetooth capable. But they just have an on-screen pairing notification since they're the primary. (You can pair earbuds to them, I think, at least you can do that with the handhelds, but there's also a wireless mic / remote head that they go with)
This is, hands down, the most beautiful #fountainpen in my collection at the moment. It is a Ryan Krusac Studios Legend L-16 "Kraken" fitted with a Fountain Pen Revolution 14kt gold Ultra Flex nib with an ebonite feed and inked up with Namiki Blue. The scrimshaw body is naturally shed moose antler (not something I'd usually be into but it makes an amazing canvas and feels lovely), the cap is Bolivian rosewood, and the section is ebonite. I am madly in love with this pen and so happy I added it to my collection.
