Ok, thanks all! After my current project wraps up I think I'm going to backup my windows laptop and try single booting Linux Mint for a while, with a virtual machine for making Windows builds of things.

ok this is 100% on me and the way I asked the question, but I don't need technical support on how to install linux, lol. I'm more curious about:

  • What's the linux experience like in 2024? How has it changed since the Ubuntu days?
  • What are the obstacles for doing everyday work in Linux? missing software/drivers/etc. (Coming from gamedev I think this should be pretty smooth tbh)
  • What distros are good now? Why choose e.g. PopOS over Mint etc

the number one response to this post has been warning about how unreliable dual booting is, which is disappointing - would have thought it was a solved problem by now. (My 2011 Macbook Air with boot camp on it never overwrote my boot record or left me unable to boot into OSX)
