This article is about India but it also pretty clearly applies to the US:

https://www.telegraphindia.com/opinion/the-two-poles-indian-democracys-future-will-be-decided-in-10-days/cid/2022260

The key phrase here is: "élite consensus on the benefits of controlled fascistization" (Kallas, 2003)

A thing to know about that second photo: in roller derby, if only one hand touches out of bounds, it doesn't count. Making sure only one hand goes down is something we've been working on this season.

@tess these photos tell there's much more using the tip of the skate than I thought there would be, but a fortiori it makes a lot of sense.

tfw u walk past a guy and you're like "wow, he smells really nice" and you realize that it must be that part of your cycle 🙃

(Does it count as bisexual if it's only for like three days a month?)

@tess yes it's called a bi-cycle

Okay, but: "I'll stare directly at the sun but never in the mirror" is at the same time one of the most clever and most devastating lyrics in recent pop history.

I'm almost willing to forgive her latest album because of how good the last one was.

@tess That is the song that finally got me to like her

My wife: "So, Target doesn't have any pride stuff for kids."

Me: "Well we can still go; kiddo needs clothes for summer, not just Pride."

Her: "They have pride stuff for dogs."

Me: "Okay, we are not going there."

After being raised as a binary gender since birth, our child declared - at three years old - that they weren't a boy or a girl, and has insisted on they/them pronouns ever since.

They deserve to participate in Pride.

From gender feelings to crushes to first kisses, many kids know they're queer. The idea that LGBTQ+ stuff is only appropriate for adults is conservative nonsense, an agenda that wants to make our identities back into lewd perversions instead of just normal human variation.

The rest of us:

There are a lot of songs about New York but it speaks to both my age and my cultural background that the one currently playing in my head is Billy Joel's New York State of Mind.

@tess
I'd forgotten about New York State of Mind. It isn't on my favorites list. 24 of BJ's other songs are. I've listened to him my whole life and love lots of his songs. I feel Piano Man will likely be what keeps him known for the longest even though it isn't my favorite song from him.

@tess @GeePawHill
I've known many city folk who love the city and are really comfortable there. Not me. Yeah, I loved lots about NYC, but I also was never really comfortable there.

NYC subjected me to constant pretty girl problems with the threat of trans problems if I was found out. I had to take taxis, and later use a limo to avoid issues on the street. Didn't help me in the discos and at parties with cretins like that one who's conviction is all over the news.

LB: I know everyone is talking about the other news right now, but being able to log onto a government website and just file your stupid taxes without having to buy software or hire an expensive accountant is a huge boon for most working Americans.

I'm not currently one of them, but I was for most of my life and this would have been really nice.

After spending the weekend in Portland (a bunch of it on transit) I am thinking more about how we talk about the scourge of homelessness in most American cities.

It's insidious because the people who suffer the most are also the most visible symptom of the problem and therefore end up the targets of policy instead of the actual underlying causes.

How do we (and how do politicians) talk about homelessness in a way that makes people see the homeless as victims rather than the problem?

tess,
@tess@mastodon.social avatar

I've seen so many otherwise left-leaning people fall for "law and order" and "clean up the streets" slogans and elect centrists and conservatives as a result.

I get that seeing people dealing with mental illness who can't shower or find a place to poop camping out in front of your favorite restaurant is upsetting, and that it's natural (if unfortunate) to have a negative gut reaction to that.

So how can we get people past that? How do we refute cruel, ineffective answers to complex problems?

@recursive they're good for different things? I used to do all SLDLS because I wanted to isolate hams, but now I mix up everything; my goal is just to add size and strength in the offseason and not be too picky about it.

@tess That's true. I mostly concluded that higer volume RDLs were better for hypertrophy of the muscles I cared about.

I'll occasionally do small sets of heavy DL just to see how strong I am, but I don't have any specific plan to compete at powerlifting, so it's not a priority to me

Posting the Linux distro chooser in anyone's mentions gets you an instant block. It doesn't matter if the person was literally asking which Linux distro to use.

I will not be answering any further questions at this time.

tess,

There's clearly bits of 5E and what might even Dungeon World (on the RP side) in there, to be fair.

And of course when I say "based on" I do not mean "uses some kind of OGL" because mechanics are not copyrightable and fuck Wizards of the Coast.
