I hate the taste of mint so I'm always looking for toothpaste that tastes better... I was horrified to discover that if you go of the beaten path with toothpaste there are 100s of brands with "no fluoride" which only a tiny number of people really need... Be careful if you use a "crunchy" brand ... fluoride is amazing.

Computers as tools for humans are so useful exactly because they can’t think and do tedious work like calculations or information storage and retrieval for humans in a deterministic way.

It took like nearly 90 years of digital computers to make them powerful enough to run a wasteful algorithm that pretends to think (but doesn’t) and to deliver bullshit non-deterministic results while using absurd amounts of computational and environmental resources.

@thomasfuchs I've talked to one person who uses generative AI to double check some of their code, so in that limited use case it seems to work ok for them. Everything else seems to be "in the future, AGI will do all the hard stuff for us" pipe dreams.

@argv_minus_one @thomasfuchs yeah, the implicit assumptions in American society are basically that shareholders will do anything they can to squeeze more profit out of our economy and anyone who pushes back is a troublemaker. Everything from public policy to labor rights have been subsumed by the goal of making sure Wall Street can maintain year over year profit growth at all costs.

I think I found a way to get the folk on NextDoor to understand the minimum wage thing.

The last time the minimum wage was set was 1997. At the time, the average Social Security payout was $774 a month.

(It's currently $1696)

@jrconlin ah, but see that social security was earned because they worked hard for it, whereas the minimum wage is given to the barely deserving workers who haven't justified their existence fully. Complaining about how little the minimum wage is also proof that they're ungrateful, so they probably shouldn't have jobs in the first place.
