When self-hosting, we try to solve a non-technical problem with (often shaky) technical solutions.

I think we need to acknowledge our weaknesses to improve.

Berlin is doing its best to try and drag me there in September

☁️ @nextcloud Conference on 16-17
🅰️ @ansible Community Day on 20
[m] @matrix Community Summit on 21-23

That would be a full week of great community-centric conferences 🤩

Me: "I'm going to write a quick post about how dangerous it is to do self-hosting but why it's important to be able to do it".

If you're on a summer break and you want a hands on way to learn useful hosting skills, I'm covering containers, docker compose, and @ansible, applied to Matrix.

Stay tuned, because next week we're going to cover monitoring with @Prometheus and @grafana

Trying to find minutes here and there to work on it, but the Matrix Servers List is making good progress 🗒️

thibaultamartin,
@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr avatar

@matt certainly! For now I'm still at the "making it work and stay up to date if left unattended" phase.

I'm then planning to stea… borrow @austin's list on https://joinmatrix.org/servers/ before merging it to the website.

Happy to add more servers in the list! The more the merrier 🙌

Frontend work is fun, but the culture of adding a dependency for every trivial problem terrifies me.

It's good not to reinvent the wheel, so relying on libraries is useful. But ultimately an app will break as soon as a single one of its dependencies breaks.

I recently wrote about finding a note taking app that worked well for me to replace the OneNote I loved. I brushed off one solution as too impenetrable because it has a steep learning curve.

Having taken a bit more time to dive in, I still think the Logseq onboarding experience is unsettling… but the tool might not be that difficult to use.

Some day I'll stop second guessing myself, but today is not that day.

Dilemma: Obisdian is pretty great, I want to support the development, and I like that their sync service is E2EE.

But $8/month to synchronise a few kilobytes of data per day, for a (fancy) markdown editor is A LOT. It's the price of a Netflix subscription here 😐

thibaultamartin,
@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr avatar

@vintprox A great solution… that doesn't work on iOS :)

I could use the WebDAV plugin, but it hasn't been updated in a year and I don't want to invest time in a solution that is too fragile for something as important as personal notes.

But it's worth keeping in mind that notes can always be exported to regular markdown if needed

I’m putting some thoughts together on paper, and I’m wondering what people think here about the issue.

Why do you think centralisation is a problem?

I'm not a designer but I worked on frontend projects and I had to spend time in Figma.

I just tried @penpot and WOW, the flex and grid layouts are so much more intuitive than how Figma handles layouts 🤯

No, website, I do not want to "Learn more" or "Review my settings" or "View details", I want a "Reject all" button right next to the "Accept all" in the cookie consent window. That's what I want. Only that.

@herzleid I've been pretty happy with Firefox's efforts in that area

So following the acquisition of Gandi and the sudden decision to charge for mailboxes, I'm looking for a new provider.

I've been recommended a few (and I'm interested in your recommendations too!), and I'm sad so many providers are deceptively calling their services "completely private" or worse, "end-to-end encrypted".

E2EE for mails never made it to the general public. GPG is for the tech savvy, and S-MIME is mostly used in a corporate context.

thibaultamartin,
@thibaultamartin@mamot.fr avatar

@koyax I'm 100% not fine without SMTP, email is too critical for me not to be able to use standards 😁

I didn't really get how there could be such a thing as cozy SF. Just couldn't picture it.

Now that I've read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers I totally understand.

Listening to these books made me feel like I was on a holiday.

I'll still be reading hard(er) SF, but it will be nice to grab some cozy SF from time to time :).

@Liesvanrompaey @bookstodon @bertrand Chambers work is amazing. I devoured the wayfarer series (though the long way is still my favourite). The monk & robot series are plain awesome, very relaxing.

There’s always this idea of the wide (wild) outside and a small, cosy inside. In the Wayfarers it’s the space, in Monk & Robot it’s the wild nature.
