We're often asked "When can I use Thunderbird in my browser?" It's a logical question! After all, Thunderbird was built on top of Firefox technologies, right?

🕘 December 2009: Maybe you were upgrading your computer to the new Windows 7, or checking out Ubuntu 9.10. Perhaps you were pouring all your free time into Valve’s ridiculously fun survival shooter Left 4 Dead 2. And maybe, just maybe, you were eagerly anticipating installing Thunderbird 3.0…

Step back into the Thunderbird Time Machine as Jason looks at what made this such a landmark release!

We hear you: it IS frustrating that Thunderbird doesn't have a proper conversation view! It's finally time to answer WHY, and explain what we're doing to solve it.

It all started about 20 years ago...

Oh snap! Good news, Linux users: we're adding the Thunderbird Snap, previously maintained by the awesome Ubuntu desktop team, to our officially supported Linux packages! 📦 🐧

Learn all about why we made the change, what it means and what to expect, and where to report issues in our blog post.

@Ray_Of_Sunlight Not a problem at all, since we also maintain the Flatpak.

When Thunderbird for Android is ready for release, what will the upgrade path from K-9 Mail look like? Will both apps co-exist? Where does Mozilla Sync fit in?

Alex answers some of your burning questions about our Android plans in this short clip from our recent Community Office Hours session.

@mdosch No, just the subtitles for now (in English and German). But your question prompted me to update the PeerTube and YouTube links with the transcript. Great idea :D

Please check again and you should see it.

@arti Absolutely 100%.

@nick Thunderbird for Android and K-9 Mail will have identical feature sets.
~Jason

thunderbird,
@thunderbird@mastodon.online avatar

@nick I should add that using a Mozilla Account and thus using Sync is completely optional

More info https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/sync#w_what-if-i-dont-want-to-sync

thunderbird,
@thunderbird@mastodon.online avatar

@flarion We're working on a blog post that will provide the tl;dr, and we'll also be adding transcripts to future videos. But basically, we're working on the smoothest transition possible between K-9 and Thunderbird for Android, using Sync or possibly a one-tap migration.

@thunderbird From the blog feed: "As usual, if you want to see things as they land you can always check the pushlog and try running daily, which would be immensely helpful for catching bugs early."

What email client are people using on desktop these days? Is still the go? My MS Office subscription gives me access to Outlook but it's terrible for personal use (arguably it's terrible for any use, but it's annoying enough that I don't want to use it even though I'm already paying for it).

I was going to make a joke here about going back to Lotus Notes, but it looks like IBM sold it back in 2019, so it wouldn't even feel nostalgic.

Boosts welcome.

thunderbird,
@thunderbird@mastodon.online avatar

@timixretroplays We're definitely using Thunderbird (thunderfooding?), but we miiiight be just a bit biased! 😄

Awww, Lotus Notes. 😢

Big thank you to @dogphilosopher for an update to flatpaks on Bluefin. Now flatpaks can be preinstalled from the ISO rather than having to download them on first boot in order to provide the intended experience. That means @thunderbird on the dock by default!

Awesome step forward for us to be able to bring you intended apps by default without straying from @flathub

If you can help with testing the new ISOs, please see below for instructions.

@thunderbird How would I debug not being fetched with 115.9.0 (64-bit) ? New tasks created in Thunderbird are pushed to the CalDAV server but such that are created on other devices are not pulled. The tasks sync fine with Tasks.org on my Android phone. I already tried to look at the Flatpak log, but nothing related shows up.

I don't know about y'all, but I'm starting to feel like the spam filters on @thunderbird are super aggressive.

It tends to mark emails in threads I'm active in as Junk on its own.

I've missed work emails because of this.
