@RogerBW@thcrt This comment is so 2024. Back in my day we turned electricity into user engagement and projected revenue. What is this profit thing you're talking about ๐
It's surreal how slowly time moves in the world of C compilers.
Today there are still active projects that are hesitant to move past C89, and C99 is still the "new" standard.
The C99 standard has been released before the first public Mac OS X and Windows XP. It's older Itanium and the x86-64 instruction set. It predates iPod, Game Cube, first ever Xbox, and Nokia 3310.
Entire platforms lived and died in the meantime, while C programmers still can't be sure if they can rely on the new C99.
It's a tough day when everyone you work with directly, including your manager, is laid off -- excuse me, "had their roles reduced", and you're asked to onboard their replacements, people told to take those very same roles just in a different country who are not any happier about it. (It's almost like capitalism isn't actually good and you shouldn't want to live in the US.)
I suspect I'll be taking Akio on extra long walks for the time being.
Miraculously, I'm back to eating solid food and I can talk more or less normally ๐. I got very lucky when I compare myself to the videos of others who had partial glossectomies...
Last year, an area around twice the size of Luxembourg was burnt in the EU.
It was the fourth worst year since 2000 regarding areas affected by wildfires. This is also due to the single largest fire to occur in Europe since the 1980s.
We call for greater prevention and preparedness via:
๐น nature-based solutions like vegetation management
๐ธ wildfire early warning systems
๐น the efficient firefighting means that the #EUCivilProtection Mechanism offers.
@EU_Commission I'm afraid that vegetation management solutions involving removing undergrowth eliminate habitat for birds, bugs and small animals and harm biodiversity. Is it really impossible for us to protect forests as natural environments?
I find it very hard to find interesting music I haven't heard yet on Spotify. Am I doing it wrong? Home screen just has the same 30 songs and discovery weekly is only once a week. Is there an open source front end with better discovery or an alternate service?
Any of my #vegan friends out there know where I could find a cook book that would provide an "Evidence based vegan liquid diet for weight gain after partial glossectomy"? Nothing seems to be coming up when I search for it on Kagi. I know it's super nitch, but it could be fore anytime someone is forced to have a cold beverage only diet and somehow survive on it. Mana drinks and Nutridrink plant based is really not enough variety for me, and this might have to pull me through months of radiation therapy if the oncologists impose that on me.
@holgerschurig I lost 3.5 kilos, going from 71kg to 67.5kg post op. So about %5 of my weight.
I guess for me, sentientism is quite important and it gives me strength at this time. By believing in the value of all sentient beings, regardless of their intelligence or strength I in turn believe that I too have value in a time when I am neither strong nor productive. I haven't written a single line of code in weeks. In the context of a capitalist carnist society I may have no value at all. But in a sentientist society, I still have value, and I still value the cows and the chickens that could be turned into broth on my behalf. So long as I am able, I will seek ways to live in line with my sentientist values.
On an unrelated note, milk causes me really bad heart burn and other digestive distress so it wouldn't likely help me much.
@anderseknert they store the mailing list in an in memory cache that only gets refreshed whenever the micro-service is redeployed. That's why it's business days. Over Easter, no one is committing to git.
@anderseknert seriously, I used to work for an unnamed non-profit that updated its mailing list by downloading csv files from django admin and uploading them to the mailing list SaaS provider (ecomail). But even then, the unsubscribe links worked fine and instantly because they were provided and managed by ecomail, so I have no idea what could be going on here.
Just wanted to take a moment to shill for Czech semi-socialized medical system. Urgent surgery, MRI, PET and CT scans, biopsies, a first, second and third opinion and a week in the hospital cost me a grand total of 90CZK. Approximately $3.87 USD. As far as I can tell, the quality of care was broadly comparable to what I would have gotten in the US (based on experience in the US system).
Partial tongue removal is worse than I imagined. I can actually talk a little, but I woke from the operation in extreme pain with tubes going everywhere. Even opiates didn't kill the pain, only dulled it, but they made me extremely nauseous. I also wasn't allowed to have any water in my mouth for the first 24 hours. First night was an extreme form of torture. Endless thirst, pain, nausea, yet not being able to eat or to throw up. Doing better now, but still not sure if I want to live.
I was diagnosed with tongue #cancer two days after my 33rd birthday. Today I learned that about a quarter of my tongue will be removed next Thursday and that if I survive I may never speak normally again. What is the best open source #AI speech synthesis/replication model that I can train myself? I'd like to set up https://www.openstenoproject.org/plover/ to talk for me, so I need something with fast inference. I don't want to sound like espeak (even though I love the software and respect the authors).
Waiting in the ENT (Ear Nose Mouth) department of the hospital and only two people out of 20 have face masks. Totally ignoring COVID fears, it's a bit weird that almost no one masks in a department where one of the primary purposes is to diagnose and treat strep throat :O
https://www.bbc.com/news/business-68534703 have there been any double blind studies on self inflicted gunshot wounds? How can they be so certain so quickly about the nature f a gunshot wound?
