I swear, half the CVEs I hear about are “if your computer is connected to the internet and someone sends you a text message, they now have your power of attorney”

and the other half is “if a trained thief were to sneak into your house and replace your hard drive with an identical copy, an attacker with an exact predictive model of that drive could interrogate the SSD wear leveling algorithm and reduce the search space for your bitlocker password by up to 12 bits without you even noticing

timthelion,
@timthelion@emacs.ch avatar

@ktemkin You forgot the 30% of CVEs which are 'if you turn on these three flags that were deprecated in 2009 and point your program at a non trusred server the program would run slightly slower. LOOK ITS A DOS ATTACK CAN I PLEEZZ HAVE A CVE ON MY RESUME PLZZ!!!!'

It's a tough day when everyone you work with directly, including your manager, is laid off -- excuse me, "had their roles reduced", and you're asked to onboard their replacements, people told to take those very same roles just in a different country who are not any happier about it. (It's almost like capitalism isn't actually good and you shouldn't want to live in the US.)

I suspect I'll be taking Akio on extra long walks for the time being.

timthelion,

@Yhg1s you know you don't have to onboard your replacements right? Like you can literally refuse.

It's surreal how slowly time moves in the world of C compilers.

Today there are still active projects that are hesitant to move past C89, and C99 is still the "new" standard.

The C99 standard has been released before the first public Mac OS X and Windows XP. It's older Itanium and the x86-64 instruction set. It predates iPod, Game Cube, first ever Xbox, and Nokia 3310.

Entire platforms lived and died in the meantime, while C programmers still can't be sure if they can rely on the new C99.

timthelion,
@timthelion@emacs.ch avatar

@kornel @cdamian @skolima Sure, but Java is objectively more verbose than in 2004. The language has become unreadable.

I was diagnosed with tongue two days after my 33rd birthday. Today I learned that about a quarter of my tongue will be removed next Thursday and that if I survive I may never speak normally again. What is the best open source speech synthesis/replication model that I can train myself? I'd like to set up https://www.openstenoproject.org/plover/ to talk for me, so I need something with fast inference. I don't want to sound like espeak (even though I love the software and respect the authors).

In 1945, just days after American troops entered Prague my grandmother smuggled herself to Paris in the baggage car of an American military train. Later, when it was clear that Czechoslovakia would be in Soviet hands, she left Europe for America. 78 years later I picked up this newly minted Czech passport and found myself reflecting on refugees. My grandma didn't go to America to escape violence, WWII was over, but rather because she feared for her right to practice her Catholic religion.

There is a famous Czech film, 'pelíšky' about the experience of living under communism. A repeated refrain from the film is "I'll give the Bolševiks a year, at most two", representing the belief of one character that the regime would not last. It lasted 43 years and my grandmother had long settled and established a family when the USSR fell. On her deathbed, however, I spoke to her only in Czech. She never stopped dreaming of moving back to this country.

There is another mantra that we keep on repeating, which is that refugees should be integrated. Its a bizarre idea when you look at it closely. Almost by definition a refugee is someone who does not want to be here. A refugee is not a person who has come, but a person who has fled. We interview them and ask them what they are running from, and if they speak of what they are running towards, they are turned away.

I myself came from America not as a refugee but as an immigrant. I'm not sure how well integrated I am. I am able to communicate in Czech, but I can't even smile in this country without revealing the fact that I am a foreigner. Perhaps the strongest indication that I'm not really Czech is that I don't drink beer.

Is it harmful to Czech society that I'm not integrated? I'm not sure, I haven't killed anyone yet and I pay my taxes. Perhaps those are more important goals than taking on every aspect of your new homeland's culture? And what gives, when I was growing up in America I was once a saint in the Church of Emacs. I'm pretty sure I'm better integrated here in Prague than I ever was in my 'homeland'.

Last year, an area around twice the size of Luxembourg was burnt in the EU.

It was the fourth worst year since 2000 regarding areas affected by wildfires. This is also due to the single largest fire to occur in Europe since the 1980s.

We call for greater prevention and preparedness via:

🔹 nature-based solutions like vegetation management
🔸 wildfire early warning systems
🔹 the efficient firefighting means that the Mechanism offers.

timthelion,
@timthelion@emacs.ch avatar

@EU_Commission I'm afraid that vegetation management solutions involving removing undergrowth eliminate habitat for birds, bugs and small animals and harm biodiversity. Is it really impossible for us to protect forests as natural environments?

I have a hard time taking seriously people who warn me that the next US presidential election will decide between democracy and fascism and then spend most of their time yelling at anonymous strangers online about not voting.

Why are you not desperately trying to get out the vote in swing states? Or stockpiling ammo and batteries for your insurrectionary cell?

timthelion,
@timthelion@emacs.ch avatar

@HeavenlyPossum If the only choice is 'democracy or fascism' then you don't have democracy. Telling me I must vote a certain way doesn't a democracy make.

Hello , (regarding CVE-2023-52071)

Well, first I of course think that the "burden of proof" would be on the person that insists that there is a problem. The one saying that this is a should provide the necessary details to explain "beyond reasonable doubt" that the identified problem is a vulnerability. There are no such details or explanations provided in the existing CVE. There is nothing there that identifies a vulnerability.

timthelion,
@timthelion@emacs.ch avatar

@bagder I'd like to file a CVE against Daniel Stenberg. He can easily DOSed simply by telling him that there is a security vulnerability in curl. Daniel is a key piece of internet infrastructure responsible for maintaining mission critical software.

Unfortunately, he can be put out of service for hours simply by putting a number next to the letters C.V. and E This needs to be patched immediately. Where can I report this?

Any of my friends out there know where I could find a cook book that would provide an "Evidence based vegan liquid diet for weight gain after partial glossectomy"? Nothing seems to be coming up when I search for it on Kagi. I know it's super nitch, but it could be fore anytime someone is forced to have a cold beverage only diet and somehow survive on it. Mana drinks and Nutridrink plant based is really not enough variety for me, and this might have to pull me through months of radiation therapy if the oncologists impose that on me.

Just wanted to take a moment to shill for Czech semi-socialized medical system. Urgent surgery, MRI, PET and CT scans, biopsies, a first, second and third opinion and a week in the hospital cost me a grand total of 90CZK. Approximately $3.87 USD. As far as I can tell, the quality of care was broadly comparable to what I would have gotten in the US (based on experience in the US system).
