To a mathematician, the funniest line in this article is this:

"Getting to the singularity, though, will require a significant leap from the current point of AI development."

Kind of like

"To reach infinity we'll need significantly larger numbers."

Are there vocal transhumanists with singularity timelines where they don't personally get "there"?

Transhumanism seems like a secular religion, but it provides a personal rapture only if it arrives before the believer dies. Brainfreeze is low credibility backup plan.

What COVID19 has taught us about the Zombie Apocalypse is that there will be zombie denialists, zombie virus infection parties, zombie conspiracy theorists, and politicians ruthlessly exploiting lies about zombies to kill off demographics who won't vote for them—and when a vaccine against Z-virus is invented there will be zombie anti-vaxxers (some of them funded by the Kremlin for shits and giggles).

tinkel,

@cstross When the first streamer gets bitten and and gets more views as a zombie, other streamers are quick to join. Some only fake it.

Not everyone gets bad Zombie sickness. Some just have high toned screams and like Taylor Swift.

Accurate analysis of what is going on from 2014 "By not wanting to 'provoke Vladimir Putin' and showing weakness , we provoke Vladimir Putin."

When TV producers release a finished series to the public, and name every episode except the first, which they just call “Pilot” … seriously? Novelists don’t call the first chapter of a novel “A sample that I wrote to show to the publisher in the hope they’d give me a contract.”

tinkel,

@gregeganSF
Is that so bad idea to test?

Maybe a novelist could write just a first chapter, a pilot. Once there are enough preorders, you get a book.

An opioid expert from Texas A&M gave a guest lecture and mentioned that Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick’s policies were costing lives. Within hours, Patrick’s office got her suspended, formally censured, and nearly fired.

Looking from EU, it looks like some US states are already like Hungary (illiberal democracies).

An illiberal democracy describes a governing system that hides its "nondemocratic practices behind formally democratic institutions and procedures" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illiberal_democracy

This is like dinosaurs having their picture taken with an asteroid.

Somehow the reality is even more absurd than the famous "This is fine" .jpg.

Forget about orcas deliberately sinking your boat; a 2-tonne sunfish will do it by accidentally bumping into you.

Yeow. Apparently replying with a thumbs-up emoji to a photograph of a contract can be as legally binding as signing the contract, at least in some circumstances.

    @DrSC Not at all.

    Frequent social media use exists to fill some need. It makes sense that people who are content don't need social media as much as people who feel unsatisfied.

    I mean, weekly sounds like good amount of use. Most of the noise dies off in a week.

    Hard to say if the problem is reading or writing. You are not supposed to read papers or non-fiction books from start to end.

    (you already know this but..) The right way to read papers and most non-fiction books is to skim, gradually deepening skim, with lots of jumps. Go back and forth until you have learned & understood enough or decide to quit because it's not worth it.

    "Embrace, extend, and extinguish" (EEE), also known as "embrace, extend, and exterminate", is a phrase that the US DOJ used to describe its strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences in order to strongly disadvantage its competitors.
