⚠️ Brick Fest Live European tour – AVOID!

Please share with anyone you know who might be considering paying the exorbitant entry fee to these scammers

The American-run event series has kicked off their European tour with a series of three underwhelming shows in the UK (hyped as ‘the UK’s biggest brick festival’)

This weekend they are at the Birmingham NEC, and you can see exactly what they’re offering for the money (very little) in this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79HZojq_zsQ

Besides avoiding Birmingham this weekend, please don’t waste your money on their shows across Germany (billed as ‘das größte Mitmach-Event rund um Bausteine’) over the summer – coming first to Regensburg and Stuttgart

Just remembered to cancel my subscription to Ground News 🙌

I only signed up in January, after several YouTubers had convinced me it was a good way to get a balanced overview of relevant news

What none of them told me was that the whole thing is an (expensive) load of machine-generated drivel

I somewhat suspect none of them had been using it as regularly as they claimed

@kate @Sylvhem The word ‘nibling’ was right there, Auntie Anne! 😉

Admittedly, I only just discovered that it existed back then!

It was apparently coined in 1951 – maybe – by linguist Samuel E Martin, and the Merriam-Webster post which contains this information does concede that it took half a century to gain any sort of traction: https://www.merriam-webster.com/wordplay/words-were-watching-nibling

The OED, where I looked first, doesn’t even acknowledge the word’s existence, let alone offer any insight into its history – poor show!

I am always mildly irritated when I come across the phrase 24/7/365

    24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 weeks a year?? 🤯

Why do people never write 24/7/52 (which does admittedly look like a mid 20th century date) … or just 24/365?

I can’t think why YouTube’s algorithm recommended this video to me … apart from the cats, and the LEGO, and the trains 😉

It’s not a video of cats playing with LEGO trains btw

No, it’s cats riding in specially engineered cat-size LEGO trains! 😻😻

Having been on my first train of the year today (still masking btw), I was enjoying looking out at the infrastructure rolling past the window (yes, I know!)

But I was dismayed – nay, shocked – to see this permissible speed indicator with a non-standard typeface 🙀

Not sure what font they’ve used – it’s not one of the usual suspects as far as I can tell – but it should, according to UK rail regulations, be the one described in BS 3693B–1964, as I’ve mocked up in the second image

A quickly mocked up 35 mph sign according to the RSSB specification for sign AD01m, ‘Permissible speed indicators (mph)’. The ‘3’ in particular is quite distinctive, with an angular upper half.

    1. The shocking state of autism diagnosis in the UK. [Title slide, with swirly-lines-and-question-marks graphic.]

    2. Autism is under-diagnosed. We are gatekept out of diagnosis by discriminatory and financially inaccessible systems.

    3. What is the average age of diagnosis? Estimates place the average age of a diagnosis around 5 to 6 years old (Brett et al., 2016; van ’t Hof, 2020). These studies have limited accuracy as they only covered an age range of 2.5 to 19.5 years (van ’t Hot, 2020). It is clear that more robust research is needed.

    4. Gender difference in diagnosis. Where diagnosis occurred at 5 years old or later, males were generally diagnosed earlier than females (Petrou et al., 2018). Again data is hampered by a lack of insight into adult diagnoses and people outside of traditional gender binaries.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy @audhd Alt text for images in the preceding post:

    1. The impact of race and ethnicity on diagnosis. Despite prevalence of autism being nearly double the average for Black children at 2.11% (Roman-Urrestarazu, 2021), there is little data on average age of diagnosis for ethnic minorities. Tromans et al. (2021) found that autism was less likely to be identified in ethnic minority groups.

    2. Despite Autistic people being more likely to have co-occurring diagnoses, such diagnoses were associated with a delay in identification of autism (Petrou et al., 2018).

    3. Age-related issues with diagnosis. O’Nions et al. (2023) found that as age increased, the number of autism diagnoses decreased. 2.94% of 10-to-14-year-olds had a diagnosis (within the study cohort) compared to just 0.02% of people aged over 70. This highlights the incorrect belief that autism is a condition of childhood.

    4. Conclusion. The diagnostic environment of the UK is currently crippled by racial and gender bias, ageism, and stereotypes that lead diagnosticians to believe that autism only exists in aggressive little boys. Added on top of this is the fact that co-occurring diagnoses appear to be delaying autism diagnosis when they should, in fact, be an indicator that autism should be considered as a factor.

I’ve often thought it would be handy if Mastodon apps stripped the tracking stuff off URLs, but I’ve resigned myself to the small effort it takes to do so by hand when posting here

I do realise this isn’t a small effort for everyone – non-tech-savvy people and people who simply lack the spoons deserve not to be tracked too

I hope Apple follows suit – and it would be great to have the option of doing this by default when copying URLs from location bars and explicit hyperlinks

I am irrationally annoyed at the current thing that is being printed. There are very legitimate reasons that it is taking as long as it is, but at the same time it’s actually very little material that is being laid down. It’s just being laid down very sparsely and that takes forever so it looks like there is no progress at all because the printer is spending so much time moving from one pointy bit to the next.

But I am like “arrrrgh! finish already!”
