I love the smell of new software in the morning! After 20+ years of monitoring your Mac, iPulse finally comes to iOS https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ipulse-monitor-your-device/id6474695786

@gedeonm how is pocket god still up that high when it’s last update was like 8 years ago? Wild

Are there any good Javascript libraries for working with ActivityPub? Need something for an upcoming project. Will be used with NextJS.

I absolutely love this flashforge burnt titanium filament. Prints so well and looks great.

friendly reminder to also check that your automated backups are running (you have automated backups right?) and that they're non-empty, and ideally actually usable!

In fact, four of the games have no keys available.

Every time I open Apple News I’m reminded just how bad publications are. It’s 99% fluff/sponsored garbage. These companies wonder why revenue is down and they’ll go and blame Google or Facebook or ad blockers but they’re not looking at their own content. I’ve seen a few just scrolling that were definitely gpt generated.

YouTube has been running really slow in safari the last day or so and I thought hmm, surely it's not adguard, YT said they weren't limiting the speed of people using ad blockers (I have premium so shouldn't matter). Sure enough, disable adguard and now YT is really fast again. Sus.

I just imposed a series of tariffs on goods made in China:

25% on steel and aluminum,
50% on semiconductors,
100% on EVs,
And 50% on solar panels.

China is determined to dominate these industries.

I'm determined to ensure America leads the world in them.

troy,
@troy@opencoaster.net avatar

@virtualbri @potus incredibly short-sighted. If the cars pass all the safety requirements I don't see why they couldn't compete here. It's going back to when they tried to stop early Japanese imports.

It's been less than a week since Nintendo shut down Yuzu and we already have a successor: "Suyu"

Emulation is legal in America.. can't stop open source!

troy,
@troy@opencoaster.net avatar

@mikey hah the name tho 👌

Yuzu would still be around if they didn't try to "profit" off it. Seems the Suyu devs are aware of this and going to keep it purely OSS.

Had an early dinner at Bistrot Chez Remy. Mixed greens and the steak. Ordered it rare and they nailed it. The mustard sauce was excellent. Was it worth 40 bucks? Probably not but it was a fun for a first time experience.

Mixed greens salad with a poached egg and a side of fresh bread.

The wildest bag someone recommended from this post is the TomToc Navigator. It's 40L, but only weighs 2.8 lb, has water bottle holders, compression straps, great laptop/iPad compartment, and one massive clamshell bucket for clothes. And it's only $80, which concerningly cheap

If they used X-Pac or a nicer material it could be even lighter and more durable, add in stowable straps, would be an absolute slam dunk

@christianselig I have a tomtoc bag for my ROG Ally and was surprised how nice it was for the price too. Pretty thoughtful features. Definitely not the highest quality but you know price and such. I’m gonna have to look the Navigator up now

(about 10 mins video - first of two videos) I was fortunate on Sunday to see two of the on a training walk. They got to interact with some other droids, and showed us how they've been taught to react to royalty. Unfortunately, one of the droids ran out of charge before the end of the training and had to be helped off. (You know how when kittens are sleepy, they just stop and plop wherever they are and take a nap? Droids are apparently the same.)

All these small instances that haven't enabled captchas, manual approval or invitations, thus becoming victims to the spambot...

Verifying an email address doesn't really prove anything these days. Too easy to make one. The spambot is taking advantage of that fact, plus the fact that instances don't have to pass any tests to access the network, even if users do.

We can't teach every new instance owner to enable extra checks. We also can't assume that every new ActivityPub server that appears can be trusted.

It would be easy enough to filter problematic content if you ran everything through something like Bogofilter (simple but effective spam classifier) on the way in or out. Could also be used to alert admins to problematic accounts and posts. You can train such classifiers to look for other things than spam, such as slurs and hostile language.

Not something your average could implement. Such filtering should be implemented by the Mastodon team. But they're allergic to "algorithms" there, so I doubt that's going to happen.

troy,
@troy@opencoaster.net avatar

@thor there’s a lot of things it seems people running even moderately sized instances have no clue about and don’t bother learning about until too late. CDN costs, spam, moderation, backups, list goes on. Wish the docs on all projects were expanded to cover these things.
