I'm going to rant about open source a little, I am so sorry.

So much of open source favors people that ~ have time ~ That usually means:

  • They aren't caretakers (i.e. they don't have children or elder family that have care needs) or can rely on a partner to do all of that in their stead.
  • They can work long hours outside of their 9-5 jobs which excludes many Disabled people or those that have chronic pain.
  • They already have a high paying job, they have health insurance.
tyil,

@hbuchel

they have health insurance

tyil,

@dwarf Thanks! Where's the exit?

tyil,

@dwarf I'm working from my bed right now, doing meetings and PO stuff. It's not too bad I guess but I'd rather be taking a nice walk outside~

tyil,

@dwarf I have been told that I am officially the PO of my team, in addition to my regular cloud engineering tasks. It mostly boils down to "I make the tickets in addition to fixing the tickets", so right now I'm making tickets for all the Helm charts which have newer versions available.

tyil,

@dwarf Being a PO is super simple, I cannot believe this can be considered a full-time job for some people. They must be living the most comfy dream imaginable.

These people are so fucking dumb. Let me do some quick math.

Any given week day, at peak hour, any train from Madrid's metro can be carrying around 500 people. Let's consider that some of them may be traveling together, so let's say that being optimistic, they could be divided in 250 robotaxies.

Now, that's one train. At any moment there are between 10 and 20 trains going in that line in that same direction. And as much in the opposite. That makes it between 5k and 10k robotaxies. To cover a single metro line

Madrid has 16 metro lines. That makes it between 80k and 160k robotaxies just they could move the same order of magnitude of people our Metro moves in any given workday. If you want to cover really busy moments, like big sport events, you need twice that amount (the nominal max capacity of metro trains is around 1200 people per train, and believe me, I've seen them so full that you couldn't get in pretty often).

That's just for the subway. Local commuter trains and city buses, combined, are actually carrying more people daily than the subway. So let's double the robotaxies fleet again if they want it to "kill public transport". So you need between 350k and 700k robotaxies just to be able to kill the public transit of a single major city.

That's about 1/6th of every Tesla ever made. Just. For. One. City.

The current Madrid taxi fleet? 15k cars.

RE: https://botsin.space/users/fuck_cars_bot/statuses/112232273717775735

tyil,

@hajovonta @JorgeStolfi @javi Then make public transport available to all places. Busses can go anywhere cars can go, all you need is a few bus routes to actually go there. Slightly increased travel time is definitely worth it compared to having to own, maintain, and fuel a car.

Today I'm launching a project I've been working on for several months - a browsable directory of self-hosted software:

https://selfh.st/blog/introducing-selfhst-apps/

It's a supplemental tool to Awesome-Selfhosted and meant to be an alternate view focused on details that I personally find more relevant. And more importantly - it'll always be up-to-date as it's built on the dataset I use to monitor updates and releases for This Week in Self-hosted.

Feel free to reach out with feedback!

tyil,

@shollyethan It looks interesting, but it requires interaction with github.com to load anything, which in my opinion isn't great.

There's also the requirement of an account for "full access"?

tyil,

@shollyethan

The raw data is stored in a JSON file on GitHub

Does this need to be on Github? It sounds like the kind of data that can be easily self-hosted.> Not sure what you mean about access

I don't know either, its what the sign in page told me, and I found it rather strange that it even has account functionality to begin with, but I guess for comments it is understandable.

tyil,

@shollyethan

the data is stored on GitHub as a public place

I wouldn't consider a proprietary platform a "public place"> it also helps take the load off my infrastructure

A JSON file is just some plain text, I can't imagine that will take exorbitant resources of your infrastructure even if hundreds of thousands of people were to access it per day (which I also doubt is the case here).

I guess I'm just disappointed that someone on an instance lauding their love for FOSS is making a project depending on non-foss platforms once again. The project seems interesting otherwise.> I'm self-hosting the site with Ghost

I'm not familiar with Ghost, but I'd assume that you could drop the entire JSON blob to begin with and just make it a static site which doesn't need to make a call to a third party to function either way. If its always needed anyway it seems to just increase the complexity of your website while also hindering people on slower connections, and the Javascript nature is likely to hinder people with accessibility issues too.

Today's plan: buy spicy Korean noodles to clear up my sinuses. I will be in pain but it'll hopefully be worth it.

tyil,

@dwarf Its definitely worth it, those samyang 3x spicy noodles are delicious. I would suggest starting off with a normal spicy, however, as I am aware you are too white to truly enjoy spice.

Please see below for details regarding the first Forasphere/Threadiverse Working Group meeting.

Following up on the initial announcement post regarding the creation of a working group for threadiverse-type ActivityPub applications, I'm pleased to inform the community-at-large that we have scheduled our first meeting for Thursday, 4 April from 18:00 to 19:00 UTC.

Thank you @angusmcleod for organizing and providing an online meeting space:

The video-call details are below. The goal of the meeting is to clarify what this group is, what its goals are, and how it will be run. As such, the working agenda is:

  1. Intro & housekeeping (e.g. consent to record).
  2. Who/what we are, nomenclature and overall expectations.
  3. Relationship with standards organisations and processes, including Fediverse Developers Network (FediDevs), W3C Social Web Community Group, and FEP process.
  4. Organisational, including software (i.e. mailing list), meeting times, facilitation and minutes.

If you have any suggestions on the agenda please respond to this post.

Using zoom

Disgusting. There's so many free and open source alternatives available to discuss platforms built on free and open source software, and you choose the absolute worst proprietary option imaginable.

idea: , but federated (with somehow)

tyil,

@JuxGD is ass though, the current amount of instances available for it is already too many. Let's do less proprietary garbage platforms!

tyil,

@JuxGD Yeah, let's keep it that way by not making it federated. Federation doesn't just make something shit into something good.

Das ist nun gerade mit Google Docs passiert.

tyil,

@isotopp It strikes me as incredibly funny that they complain about the unchecked power of a proprietary platform on another proprietary platform. Have you ever considered using software that respects the users to avoid nearly every issue you're having with the current choices?

Does anyone know a good instance that:

  1. Doesn't require an email address
  2. Preferably isn't blocked by too many instances
  3. Preferably doesn't block any instances that aren't violent, gorey, pedophilic, spammy, etc
  4. Doesn't have SJWish rules such as "punch up not down", "no cryptocurrency", "no FOSSbros", "no COVID denial", etc
  5. Doesn't ban any belief that is a matter of physical reality, such as "__ denial", HBD, etc

Please let me know in DMs.

tyil,

@Hyolobrika Whether they have a rule written about it won't change whether they can/will do that. If you want to be able to have full trust in the mods/admins, you'll have to be the mod/admin yourself.
