Oh no for the first time I did an Internet search for something godot related and I got a low information SEO godot course sales page instead of open source documentation. It was a good clean run for six years :(

New ship for -- the garbage scowl. Even though the game is inspired by UK scifi I have to slip in a bit of Australian post-apocalyptic fetish aesthetic every now and then.

Luckily it doubles as a "are you mummy" / cyberman tear drop kind of thing too.

New update for Magnavody, my simulator

Odyssey (1972) could only render four spots on screen (two player blobs, a wall and a ball) but it achieved better colour and resolution than future consoles by the simple but genius move of including plastic overlays to stick on the TV. Of course, the framerate was terrible, limited to how quickly you peel it off and on

This update adds digital overlays! Standard, widescreen and crumpled (for authenticity)

The Odyssey video console (1972) could only draw a few blobs so to provide variety Magnavox included semi-transparent physical overlays for players to stick on their TV screens (eg a green tennis court for a tennis game). Genius!

After a lot of prototyping, here's my attempt at a physical overlay in my simemulator, Magnavody (and a real life pic for comparison). I really want to capture the fidelity of the experience eventually.

Updated second draft a bit cleaner. Also a super basic option to "crumple" overlays to recreate that weathered feel a bit.

Added widescreen version as Odyssey filled the screen in 1972 and should (optionally) do so in 2024 too!

A genuinely valuable collectible is to be one of the first 10 reviews of an indie game on Steam (it's a special threshold for visibility).

Permanently time stamped, verified and on display on one of the largest websites on Earth.

Better than an NFT or steam achievement!

Maybe the actual value of LLM is a large body of data with heaps of metatags.

Me: I would like the cover of every 1980s scifi book that features a pastel car.

OpenAI: We've got a database of those! Do you want them all mashed up?

Me: Errr, no. Thanks for tagging it all though.

upmultimedia,
@upmultimedia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Dancer Yes I know, I'm talking about any tagging they've done to categorise the source data before they generate their weightings...

upmultimedia,
@upmultimedia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Dancer Yes, this is what I'm saying... the value in this process is not the LLM out the end but the really comprehensive collection of data they built and tagged that the LLM is trained on. Sorry if that wasn't clear...

Remember when programming languages had header files? What was that even about. Was it a methamphetamine thing?

Cats (2019) is literally the last cultural artefact produced before that ancient civilisation was destroyed by COVID. In hindsight it was obvious the destination was oblivion. The centre cannot hold.

upmultimedia,
@upmultimedia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

The reviews are the best thing about Cats.

"the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs"

"It feels like a prank but I don't know on whom"

"I am not a cat person and after watching this I'm not sure I am a movie person either"

@aetataureate The thing is that I really admire the attempt? The mocap performers dance their hearts out and give really modern, lithe, theatrical dance.

It really is "a dancers film" unlike we have seen before.

Unfortunately that is not valued by film audiences as much as story, visuals, plot, dialogue, sound, themes and cohesion... which is fair enough!

I really love that soft cinematography from around 2017-2022. Kind of dark pastels or a really crunched colour space without losing detail. I don't know how to describe it really. Unfortunately we already seem to be moving on from it.

ELO have a really under-rated concept album called "Time".

The songs are classic but what I really like about it is that it was written in 1980 about a man in the 21st century reminiscing about the "good old" 1980s. A great mix of witty and poignant lyrics. It's kind of 80% wistful but 20% hilarious.

"She has a jumpsuit on
And she's also a telephone"

This is probably one of my favorite second hand . The genres it cross and each a triumph is something to behold.

Also the fact this vinyl from 1981 still sounds more than decent 42 years later is a testament to the longetivity of this analog medium.

@upmultimedia@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@godnojoe It's my favourite 2nd hand vinyl too!

Found a copy in an op shop for 50 cents. I bought it on the cover alone and it quickly became one of my favourite albums of all time.
