You know there are laws in several countries that can force writing of backdoors under gag orders, right?

What other than FOSS can help against those? The xz detection is a success story. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿป

The "xz backdoor" hack unfolding in the linux world tonight is SO EFFING interesting. Obviously the full facts are unknown but on the surface it looks like a beautiful piece of bastardry. A multi-year long con of code commits with multiple levels of social engineering attacks

If I'm understanding it correctly, one thing they did was put in a valid new feature that caused false positives with one of the security checks and used that to get approval through to disable the check (with the beautifully anodyne header "disable ifunc to fix Issue")

And their bug reports to speed up adoption are masterclasses in social engineering. Check out the language used in this request to ubuntu: it's a bugfix only, just a translation fix, has no impact, etc

Have an older linux computer with a 2014 nvidia card set up in the living room to play Steam games and unfortunately not much success compared to my more modern all-AMD rig.

Even if the games run they rarely support a controller (I guess gamepads and PC games didn't truly become a thing until recently)

But all of my games run perfectly and with keyboard/mouse/controller support and so I'm kind of impressed by myself.

From Riddick to Battlestar Galactica to Star Wars, Katee Sackhoff always looks like she is having a great time so I can't say for certain but I feel she is having an extra blast during the scene in Another Life where she plays the perfect housewife

If you have homebrew - update immediately:
$ brew update; brew upgrade

xz 5.5 or newer is compromised. This will downgrade to 5.4. CVE: 10 - max score for vulnerability! Retoot for reach!

I accidentally found a security issue while benchmarking postgres changes.

If you run debian testing, unstable or some other more "bleeding edge" distribution, I strongly recommend upgrading ASAP.

With the scrutiny-avoiding SPAC listing of Truth Social on the stock exchange we are seeing a massive scam in real time.

This "company" had revenue of less than $5 million in 2023 and is currently floating at about $7 Billion in value.

It shouldn't be legal to so obviously pump and dump this on retail investors. And there is a weird undercurrent this is to destabilise a democracy too.

Honestly what ever happened to an honest day's pay for an honest day's work! So many SHONKS on this planet.

Not going to lie. I thought migrating from firefish.city to atomicpoet.org would result in fewer people seeing my posts.

I was fine with this because what was more important to me was owning my social media presence on my own domain and server.

(Nothing against the admin of firefish.city. Heโ€™s actually helping me with maintenance of atomicpoet.org.)

What I didnโ€™t realize is that, for whatever reason, migrating to atomicpoet.org would cause a huge uptick in visibility of my posts. I donโ€™t know why. It just is.

I canโ€™t say for certain whether or not running your own server and migrating your old profile to it would also result in more exposure across the Fediverse. Iโ€™m just one case. However, I think it certainly doesnโ€™t hurt to migrate even if you lose followers in the process.
