Woah.

As a UCLA student I was brought in for a test screening of Alien 3 (they got students all the time), which I thought was terrible, and I haven't watched the sequels since.

This I may watch.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@kurtsh Alien 3 was at Fox. But I saw that Jacob's Ladder showing at Ackerman too!! Man, good times, and crazy movies.

Ackerman was such a vibrant exciting place then. So much going on all day and night. Now it's all at the dorms, and the building closes down early evening!

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@lauren Well, this is more horror than scifi really. And I wouldn't say the first ones were brightly lit.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@mattgriffin I may investigate. Starting off the movie killing off Newt and Hicks offscreen pretty much killed my interest in the film right off.

They could fuck right off with that bullshit.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@lauren Well the original is a straight up horror film in a scifi setting.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@mattgriffin I always find him good in everything I've seen him in.

The Washington Post is about to lurch sharply to the right politically as former Murdoch apparatchik solidifies his grip on the organization. Current editor Buzbee is out, and he's bringing in people from Murdoch's Wall Street Journal and the Telegraph (right-wing UK news org).

https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2024/06/02/sally-buzbee-washington-post-steps-down/

@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@dangillmor Going on the website to cancel a yearly subscription could get you an offer to refund $70 of the $120 cost.

You can then use that for another source of journalism (I spent it on the Guardian.)

honestly feel like I'm losing my fucking mind reading this shit. how does this make any fucking sense? you send an AI bot to a video meeting you're not attending where presumably other coworkers will also send their bots?????? to what fucking end? what is the point of this? why are we having NPCs video chat with eachother? what gets done with this? what is the purpose? how is this not just a fucking email? is this what jokerfication is? this doesn't make any fucking sense!

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@radicalrobit People whose profitability is arcing downward are throwing AI at the wall hoping for more money somehow.

@BlackAzizAnansi If it's painted, it's usually easy to repaint.

I'd go for it.

Nicholas Meyer's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was released 42 years ago today.

With one of the best space battles around.

@TheSpaceshipper Still the best Trek film

virtualbri,

@mattgriffin @TheSpaceshipper It's flipped for me, but a Nicolas Meyer Trek film is an amazing thing

Thanks to @lauren pointing it out, I'm enjoying "The Andromeda Strain" again, (free on YouTube with ads). It's one of those peak 70s sci-fi films; everyone should watch. Very 70s, but also very hard sci-fi, both in the best ways.

And once you're done watching read: https://theasc.com/articles/the-andromeda-strain-may-1971 which is a great article about all the special care taken to make the movie.

virtualbri,
@virtualbri@mastodon.online avatar

@andrewortwein @lauren Yeah, a few good split screen uses, especially in a montage which represents what the characters were thinking as they went to sleep which I thought was a really interesting way to handle internal dialog without voiceover or flashbacks.

It's a really good way to do it.

Obsessing over the polls is pointless. These people are going to pull out all the stops to steal this election. #maga #fascism #Election2024
