One of the fall-outs of sorts from the maintenance this morning is it's identified a fairly significant storage issue across our servers. Right now there isn't a huge amount I can realistically do other than invest a lot of money in more servers (And that's not entirely financially viable with the current state of donations from here and Universeodon (And it impacts both)).

In just a couple of hours (21:05 UK Time) will hit it's 1 year anniversary, which honestly looking back is something I wasn't sure we'd make it to for a while.

We've had a wild journey with some huge scaling issues at the start, both being at the time one of the few sites on the website that accepted registrations, being on the BBC news and various radio interviews, we went from 1 or 2 users to over 1k overnight and went onto over 50k in the first week.

It's truly disappointing to observe the latest gripping people around Meta joining the fedi network. With comments ranging from bizarre all the way through to suggesting people commit acts of terrorism and corporate espionage.

So far the entirety of this looks to be a storm in a tea cup, we know Meta is going to try to join the fediverse but that's about it right now, and honestly we'd be stupid not to think they would sooner or later. At least they're being honest up front.

EDIT: 23 June 2023 6:54BST - I've reversed this limit for the time being on the advise of @Artifex who has been able to confirm both this is not normal behaviour on the instance, and that there is still active moderation taking place. We will continue to monitor things and re-evaluate as appropriate.

We have added tooters.org to our as a limit (potentially increasing to a suspend) due to the admin acting in bad faith and spamming unrelated hashtags.

I've been doing some testing tonight with the Calckey software, as their flagship instance has reported that we've not been taking action on reports they've been sending us, however no such reports ever made it to us.

As far as I can currently tell, reports can indeed be remotely reported to us from a Calckey instance, and while they look a bit different on our end, they are still coming through and things we can do something about.

Related to my last toot, if anyone is aware of a piece of (ideally free if not cheap) software that enables me to design e-mails with mail merges and send them via a specific SMTP / mail server config I'd love you long time!

We've got the website back up and running on the newer version of Mastodon. I'm just updating the content processing now and then I'll get the other web server updated so we have our scale and resiliency back online.

It's become pretty clear in the last 24 hours that no matter what my moderation stance for this instance is, it's going to upset groups of people, and ultimately it then comes down to which groups of people I'm willing to upset.

The reality is we want this to be a safe place for everyone, and we want this to be somewhere folks can come and have sensible discussion. I'm going to be updating the server rules later today to try to articulate my views in a way that makes sense to all. (thread)

MastodonApp.UK Service Announcement:

I'm pleased to say we have got Elk up and running. Elk is an alternative web interface to the standard Mastodon web interface, and has (In my opinion) a lot more of a twitter esk feel to it.

Our very generous supporters have been using and testing it for the last week or so, and it's finally ready to be shared with the world!

Give it a try here: https://elk.mastodonapp.uk/home It's not restricted to the MastodonApp.UK Site so if others wish to use it, feel free!

We are back folks, I'm really sorry for the major outage we've had since around 3pm today. I'll write up a proper report on this and share it shortly.

We will need to perform some further maintenance tomorrow but for now I really do need some sleep!

For my community:

I plan to perform the first step in the upgrades to this instance at some point between Christmas and the end of the First week in Jan, i'm not yet 100% sure exactly when, but as I have a couple of weeks off I will (at some point) have half a day to a day that I can spend to get things here mostly up to date (Probably a minor patch or two behind as I need to also update my custom fork of Mastodon before I can update to the very latest).

Just wanted to share a bit of an eye opening experience. @PrinceMumbles and I have had a bit of an increase in take-out orders where I've been working a lot further away from home than usual and he's been super busy with his work and neither of us wanted to come home and cook, tonight was one of those nights and we had one this time last week as well.

The difference last week is we wanted to order from a place we had not tried but heard good things about, but they were only on

For those of you who generously support us here on MastodonApp.UK - Keep an eye on the Ko-Fi in an hour or so, I'll be posting a bit of an update there exclusive to supporters.

That same update will then be shared mid-week next week for everyone else here but keen to have our supporters get to "beta test" some new functionality :)

Hey Folks, I try not to bang this drum too often, we've got a couple of fairly large payments due next month for our annual subscription servers so if folks are in a position to be able to financially support us, either monthly or on a one off basis I would hugely appreciate any support you can offer.

I've now got two (Soon to be three) ways in which you can now support us here on MastodonApp & Universeodon.

  1. Ko-Fi! https://ko-fi.com/mastodonappuk

  2. BuyMeACoffee https://www.buymeacoffee.com/universeodon

MastodonApp.UK Folks:

There will be a short outage to the site between 21:00 and potentially up to 21:30 BST tomorrow. This is due to a restart being required on the physical host that runs out front end load balancer, which is how everyone is connecting to the site. I don't expect the outage to take the full 30 mins, but better safe than sorry!

For those that have (or decide to in the future) supported us financially as a project, I've posted an update on a new federated service we have launches, with early access for those of you that have been incredible and supported us - https://ko-fi.com/post/MastodonApp-UK-Launches-New-Federated-Site-Z8Z7N9JT8

Now for my favourite game... Where did I leave my 6mm drill bit... It's not in the drill and it's not in the drill bit set...

The games begin!

I finally finished writing a blog post! I'm really behind so apologies but the "formal" announcement that we have taken over Universeodon.com

Well now Twitter have utterly fucked Tweetdeck meaning accessing a lot of my company accounts is now impossible, it's time to finally re-create them here and switch to this as the primary source of truth for all of them.

It's super disappointing to see Twitter ultimately fuck over what used to be a third party app that has been one of the best ways to interact with a rapidly declining site for years.

Finally managed to get Elasticsearch to play nice with Mastodon, required a bit of creative engineering to get it to play ball.

Just waiting for Mastodon to populate all of the indexes now (And raised a feature request to improve this: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/25362)

Once we get that deployed fully we should have an improved search experience across the site here.

Though we aren't stopping here, we'll be looking to maintain our own Mastodon fork with further enhanced search in the near future.

Out of curiosity, has anyone following me purchased and used a Framework laptop?

I keep seeing them and have been very tempted over and over again, but just can't justify replacing my Macbook which is excellent. Curious if people have used them and what they thought.

Hey Folks, your semi-regular prompt that if you're happy with what you get here on MastodonApp.UK that we're not a huge enterprise like Meta / X / the other traditional social networks.

I run this at my own time and cost, and the moderators give their time to assist.

If you're able to support us, it's always hugely appreciated and helps us maintain this instance and work on growing into other services. We're hoping to launch a @pixelfed instance fairly soon!

If anyone thinks running an instance / community like this and Universeodon is easy / trivial / a piece of cake, I can assure you that while it's hugely rewarding, it can be a right pain.

Currently it's 1:39AM and I am trying to fix a performance issue, which resulted in a router failing causing a major outage, which I just experienced on the other server causing a different major outage. It's not all fun!

Why are printers such a piece of shit?

I had some things I needed to print before work tomorrow, but I can't add the printer. MacOS doesn't have drivers and Canon don't appear to publish any drivers.

Why can no manufacturer invent a printer that "just works" and continues to "just work" for the following 5 years.
