Every new pitch I hear for "AI" makes me think wow they must have come up with some interesting new technique, otherwise these claims are obviously false. And then you look into it and it's still just a very complex stochastic model underneath. But the financially motivated folks keep claiming that there's actual factual based use cases for this stuff and I really am not seeing it.

@gzt part of it is definitely marketing. Like I know my field is finding some early success using neural nets for predictions.

Created a test account on bsky and there appears to be literally no way to opt out of algorithmic feeds. If it decides you aren't following enough people, rather than allowing the Content Spigot to end it starts showing you its fucking algorithmic recommendations after that. God. Fuck Twitter and everything that spawned from it

forensicgarlic,

@mcc i follow a lot of folks on mastodon, and I really appreciate that tusky gives me a load button after I've read a bunch -- it's a good reminder I don't need to keep reading, but not a major impediment if I want to.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

Abstract art by Vian Borchert

@mcc I came across this piece by joos today on my way home. Local radio recently did an interview with them because they're street art is so striking and they're so prolific

Core Rust infrastructure is frequently hosted on the .rs ccTLD. Some of these sites could be used to drive supply chain attacks if their domains were ever compromised. .rs is operated by an NGO, but ultimately controlled by the government of Serbia.

Do there exist plausible future chains of events that could lead to some future government of Serbia suspending, or redirecting, Rust project/community sites hosted under .rs? Does the Rust community have contingency plans for this hypothetical?

the most annoying thing about the reels on facebook that get suggested is that they're all ripoffs of whatever original poster was there. it'd be one thing if it were organic, like, this hot yoga lady's video is suggested, but it's not, it's somebody stealing some video from the yoga lady's tiktok or insta or whatever, and if I see that woman ever again in a suggestion, it's a different scammer stealing her video, etc.

forensicgarlic,
@forensicgarlic@hulvr.com avatar

@gzt I would give Facebook more time if they showed me less random posts from strangers

Any recommendations on vegan Worcestershire sauce?

I've used Anne's and The Wizard, both are decent, just wanting to know if there are options out there that I'm not aware of.

Going to be making my vegan pulled pork (seitan).

forensicgarlic,
@forensicgarlic@hulvr.com avatar

@gedvondur this store brand sauce doesn't list itself as vegan, but unless 'organic spices' can mean animal derived, I think it is?

forensicgarlic,

Tired of this: "learn C so you can understand how a computer really works."

So much of modern computers is not visible from C (pipelining, virtual memory, branch prediction, cache misses, etc).

I guess what they mean is, "you learn about pointers and consecutive memory locations"? How is that helpful for programming in other languages without pointers?

C teaches you an abstraction of computers based on the PDP-11. It's interesting, but it's not essential.

forensicgarlic,

@mwfc @nedbat I was so mad when my digital signal processing class had me doing integrals by by hand, but it really did show me what the basics really were.

  1. lower back bothering me slightly over the last few days, not the side I tweaked at the gym last month (left) but rather right (the usual side). seems to be recovering, though annoying. staying out of the gym until this bout is over but not being inactive.
  2. neck seems to be doing better from its annoyances now that i've switched from a two pillow solution to a one pillow solution.
  3. lately been doing a ton of light biking at 90-100bpm while reading. easy to just hop on and go.

Helping run a bike racing team has me thinking more about gender than anything else in my cis-male life because I want my trans and non binary friends to be able to race too, and the organizing athletic organization hasn't even really dealt with the fact that women should have equal rights to men.

@chartier @Localcelebrity finding the folks to chat with seems the most important to me.

Well, that's that. Now I just need to unload my Musk-mobile.

I know it's fashionable to act like they are the Yugos of the 21st century, but that's as much crap as the the delusional love-fest it gets from other circles. It's a solidly middling car in terms of reliability, miles better than the shitty-ass Ford I had as a teenager, or the other shitty-ass Ford I had briefly as a teenager.

What I'll really miss is the charging network, though I didn't use it much.

forensicgarlic,
@forensicgarlic@hulvr.com avatar

@ucblockhead in looking to see if an electric car made sense for us in 2023, the charging network really was the standout feature of any Tesla vehicle for me. It sounds like in the next year or 2 it'll be shared, which is good news for consumers.

forensicgarlic,
@forensicgarlic@hulvr.com avatar

@ucblockhead living in a highrise in Chicago, we put most of the miles on our only car with road trips in the Midwest.

The highrise also charges a flat $25/ month fee to access it's chargers, which is probably more than we typically spend per month driving.

That, plus the higher initial cost of EVs means we'll be going hybrid with our next purchase replacing this 2005 Corolla.

@4censord @whitequark @stargirl you can definitely do the start stuff without any boards, unless you really need the visual nature of blinking a light or counting on a seven segment display.
