Does anybody know of a better umbrella term than "non-standard bicycle" for all bikes that are not the "standard" shape? So including bikes/trikes, and other but also etc

Some ideas if nothing exists already:

  • altercycle
  • laterocycle
  • pretercycle
  • teratocycle
  • nothocycle

I want language to talk about how storage infrastructure doesn't include bents, cargobikes, trikes, etc.

xtaran,
@xtaran@chaos.social avatar

@bicripple: In Germany there exists the term "Spezialrad", i.e. "Special Bike", mostly in the form of the Spezialradmesse (Special Bike Fair) which once was defined as for all bikes which don't have a diamond frame. At some point e-bikes became part of the fair, too.

Then again, there's the discussion that many of those "special bikes" are not really special anymore, e.g. cargo bikes and e-bikes are quite common these days.

I support banning right turn on red even if it only prevents people from honking at you and then throwing their coffee at you because you’re waiting for a red light in a cycle lane.

xtaran,
@xtaran@chaos.social avatar

@ascentale: Any context on that? Right turn on red for whom? For cars or bicycles?

At least a dedicated "right turn on red for bicycles" sign recently was introduced in Switzerland and IIRC a bit earlier in Germany, too.

From my point of view (as a cyclist) that's a neat thing.

"Right turn on red" for any vehicle existed as sign in East-Germany and has been adopted in West-Germany after the German reunion.

I can imagine that this could be dangerous for cyclists who don't want to turn right.

xtaran,
@xtaran@chaos.social avatar

@wesley, @ascentale @enobacon: Ok, I didn't expect it to be a general rule. That indeed seems dangerous.

Today we’re looking at the Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the electric version of the i. The i-MiEV had a similar rear-motor/rear-drive layout to the Smart ForTwo I posted yesterday but with a longer, surprisingly roomy four-door body. It went on sale in 2010, beating even the Nissan Leaf to the market. It was also sold as the Peugeot iOn and Citroën C-Zero. I snapped this Peugeot-badged version in Munich in 2012. These are great fun.

xtaran,
@xtaran@chaos.social avatar

@davidwilkins: Fun fact: The Mitsubishi variant's name was not very helpful in German speaking areas. If you tried to pronounce it, the second part after the dash sounds like the German word "Mief" which means "stale air" or "frowst". 🤪

I think I nevertheless mostly saw the i-MiEV and the C-Zero, but I can't remember having seen an iOn.

Unfortunately the came out when I tried to figure out why it doesn't charge. 😒 (Took it over without documentation on any of the modifications from the legacy of a late friend, @Obri, hence also its nickname. So in case anyone knows CityEL repair shops in Switzerland accepting CityELs of unknown state…)

xtaran,
@xtaran@chaos.social avatar

@bleeptrack: Already did, yes. Main issue is that mine has 3 (!) 230V plugs and one 230V socket. And they don't seem original (all Swiss Type J/Type 13). One is for the battery heating. Not sure about the other two and the socket. It also has no more the original batteries and I assume that it has a non-original BMC.

I so far contacted 2 repair shops in CH—one of them is the one @isziaui mentioned—and one of them was rather unfriendly, accepting only unmodified cars. (Just forgot which one… 🥴)

Beim blauen T-Shirt herrschen Grün, Gelb und Schwarz hervor, das Brompton ist leicht abwärts geneigt und es steht leicht in der Höhe versetzt "Ride Urban" darunter.

And for our last question of the night:

Q8. Have there been any cycle-related comics (web or otherwise) that you've enjoyed this year? Let us know what we should check out!

https://xkcd.com/2684/

xtaran,
@xtaran@chaos.social avatar

@ascentale A8: I recently discovered and enjoyed 's comic strips at https://theepicevents.com/ which have occasional bicycle content. I've attached four of them as the bicycle related content only starts around page 4 of his blog. Actually the "Copenhagen Cycling Signals" strip was how I stumbled upon his comic strips.

I also remember the already mentioned and I do follow @Bikeyface, too.

A single-page comic stop labeled "Cycling in Bath, England". You see a long row of yellow-ish residential houses with a street in front. The street is full of cars and it looks more like a pile-up than just a traffic jam. At the end of the pile-up there's a place-name sign saying "Bath" and a car and a blonde cyclist are approaching it. The car driver shouts to the cyclist "You're blocking all the traffic!!!". The cyclist just has a question mark above his head.
A 12-panel comic strip labeled "Copenhagen Cycling Signals", starting with drawings of more obvious and common hand signs like "turning right", "turning left" or "slowing down", (nearly) always showing a cyclist with a red shirt, blue trousers and grey helmet from the front. Then it continues with more obscure hand signs like "going backwards", "parking" (no hand sign, just shows a bicycle standing on its kickstand), "disapproval" (cyclist showing the middle finger), "strong wind" (cyclist nearly blown off the bicycle, still having his hands on the handle bar), "puddle ahead" (cyclist lifting both feet of the pedals), "circus in town" (three people on one bike, two of them are juggling), "stolen bike 1" (cyclist without bicycle), "stolen bike 2" (cyclist with second bicycle on his shoulder) and finally "bad day" (a cyclist who has fallen off his bicycle and loosing his helmet).
Single-panel comic strip labeled "My Interceptor Bike" (subtitle "Secret Construction Plan V1.0") showing a bicycle with a small bicycle trailer with a lot of weird stuff mounted to it and labeled as follows: Trailer with some highly explosive stuff (arrow points to firework rockets) 2nd seat for my bloodpack No idea what these things are called but they're awesome! (Arrow points to a standing cross mounted to the luggage rack.) Flamethrower bell (arrow points to a bicycle bell with a stick lighter on top and a spray can mounted with a tying string behind the bell) Detachable handle bar. Guitar (gonna buy an electric one ASAP) Track sweeper Spikes Advanced tire profile At the very bottom there's another label saying "After watching Mad Max I decided to add some small modifications to my bicycle."
