One of my frustrations as a web developer is that we as an industry have gotten so bad at doing stylesheets the default behavior for modern web applications is to use shadow root disable the cascade in "cascading style sheets" because people do not know how to properly scope them in their own web pages.

We've basically reverted to the bad old days where styles were defined on each element individually rather than globally, as was the intent of CSS.

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

I just ended up disabling the shadow root by defining my own custom class that inherited from LitElement. Supposedly this is not recommended because it make composition more difficult but I'm not really concerned about that. If I feel up to it I'll re-enable shadow root, but only for the top-level element(s). I definitely don't need 300 nested shadow roots in my page.

The more I read about what Microsoft is doing, the more I'm glad I switched back to Linux this week.

It's so Minty!

@jankhambrams @Mrfunkedude One of the funnier things I've read is that Windows 10 still outsells Windows 11... almost three years after it was released

it wasn't until very recently I found out that those are their lil rosy cheeks and not their eyes

honestly even though I know better I still have to try very hard not to see them as eyes,,

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@fluttergirly What's funny is that I initially saw them as rosy cheeks, but when you mentioned the eyes I can no longer unsee them.

One of the things about getting older they don't tell you about is that when you see someone post a picture of an item and exclaim, "This antique was made 50 years ago! Can you believe it??" you have to constantly remind your brain that they are not talking about the item being created in the 1940s.

does anyone have any experience with exercise triggered headaches? my gf has been having this issue for the last month where if she exercises too much (e.g. walking too far, lifting weights too much, etc) she starts getting headaches that slowly taper off over the course of a few days. the threshold is substantially lower than what she used to be capable of, like 5-10%.

we've already seen a few doctors about it and she has a neurologist appointment coming up. it's hard to search anything about this kinda thing because the internet is garbage these days.

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@suricrasia Completely naive question here, but is she getting her blood pressure checked some time after she exercises? According to the resources I've been using when monitoring my own blood pressure, she should wait about half an hour or longer after exertion to get an accurate reading.

Woke up this morning with a stiff knee and wrist and now I'm wondering what kind of shenanigans I've been getting up to when I "sleep" at night???

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

@Mrfunkedude If I sleep on my left side I unconsciously put my hand in a weird position under my pillow right where I rest my head. It has the effect of making my ring finger on my left hand feel achy when I wake up. It's highly specific and it drives me nuts when I do that. :D

super sweaty and exhausted, sure, but what do you expect after 360 push ups, 200 reverse crunches, 60 bicep curls, 30 reps of five different back exercises, and running two miles? 💅

@tillybridges Someone call the veterinarian, because somebody has to check out those sick puppies! 💪

You know what happens when you publicly shame someone for sharing covid test results? People stop sharing them. The test results don't change, just the ability of other people to learn that they may have been exposed and to test and take precautions themselves. Public shaming may make you feel superior, but it does nothing for harm reduction at best.

zalasur,
@zalasur@mastodon.surazal.net avatar

I just stopped working in a project this afternoon in frustration because of a stupid CORS error and I might need to talk to the architect in the morning to fix it because this application's architecture seems designed to turn even the simplest of tasks, AKA setting up an endpoint in the server to return some key/value store data, into a collosal headache.

Hey Millennials. Gen X here.

I saw a post from one of you guys that read "Our retirement plan is social collapse".

Our retirement plan when we were growing up well into adulthood was thermonuclear oblivion.

I get where you're coming from, but I would suggest having a Plan B for just in case when civilization doesn't collapse on schedule.

Ok, got one important errand done today. Next up I have to get ready to head up to the northern 'burbs to pick up some soda.

Nearby, there is this old brew pub I used to hang out at in the days before I stopped drinking. The building is still there but the owner sold it last year and there hasn't really been any updates as to what has been going on with the place since the new owners took over. So I'm planning on sneaking over there to take a few pictures of the building. 😈
