So if there are communities who are much in favor to blacking out indefinitely and 1 mod decides otherwise because "reasons" does that mean that they will remove the mod to make sure that the community and mod team can actually black out?
The branding for kbin is perfect for capturing the reddit migrators. The biggest friction point for the Fediverse is choosing an instance. If I want to join Lemmy, googling Lemmy takes me to a landing page with no join button, telling me to go to these other sites. Some of these sites even actively discourage signups, creating...
As a former redditor I am glad to have found a new "home" and I hope I'm not intruding. Nevertheless, we are all a huge migration that is bound to change how kbin works and we're bound to piss off some pre-migration Keebinetters. The fact you guys were here before and not in reddit makes evident you don't want this to become a...
You can only access it via logging into gmail but you can send Emails to people who also use for example @Yahoo.com.
Makes sense?
Your account is made in Kbin.social(which is an instance). You can access your account only via Kbin.social but you can use it to access other instances (for example lemmy instances and fedia.io) via this instance (Kbin.social).
So you don't have to make an account on multiple instances but use your account here to communicate with other communities who are not created in Kbin.social.
A community is the equivalant to a subreddit. On Kbin they are called "magazines".
Give yourself also some time to get familiar with everything :).
A fun thing to try is this;
You have an instance called beehaw.org. You can go to the site itself to check it out. It is an different instance that can communicate with the current one.
They have their own communities and if you would like to comment within those communities on beehaw.org itself you can create an account on beehaw.org and do that.
But what the cool part is is the following;
On your current Kbin instance do the following;
Go to the top left an click on the 3 stripes.
You get a menu with a few options and 1 is called "magazines"
Click on that and you can see the magazines that are created on this instance(kbin.social for example)
Type in "Beehaw" and click enter.
you can now see the communities that are hosted on Beehaw.org and read/comment on them via the current Kbin instance and the Kbin account you created.
It is the same as r/Conservative which is ran/moderated by well probably conservatives and like minded but that doesn't mean that the whole of Reddit is pushing Conservative propaganda.
I hope people understand the difference.
If there are enough instances within a federation with different may I say progressive views than those will drown out the noise of others.
People only have "power" over their own instance.
As an instance you can even block instances that you don't want to communicate with (as far as I know).
People love to shit on western civilization, in the same sentence advocate for "Free speech" (the irony is killing me) and for some reason refuse to just pack up and go to the countries they seem to "love" so much and experience what it is to have no voice at all and just fall in line with what you are being told 24/7.
Kbin is already discoverable and you can already access other communities on different instances via Kbin.social (I don't know if it is possible the other way around for now because of Cloudfare enabled).
The thing is because of the influx of new users Cloudfare is turned on temporarily so that the site doesn't crash constantly, it only messes up Kbins "place" in the universe for the time being ;) from what I understood.
Beehaw.org is an lemmy instance for example and if you go to "Magazines" here and type in "Beehaw" you can see the beehaw communities and access them from the Kbin instance.
As you may have already seen most of Reddit has gone dark including r/GlobalOffensive. We, the mod team of r/GlobalOffensive have created this alternative Counter-Strike community here for people who want to continue discussing Counter-Strike, bypassing Reddit's shenanigans....
Hi Peeps! For the people who would like a bit of "reddit flair" into their Kbin.social (or other instance within the Kbin federation) comment section check this;
I apologize if this has already been covered, but I’ve seen a lot of people talking about a need for a kbin app. While I agree that a native app would be nice to have eventually, I figured that quite a few people probably aren’t aware of how web apps work. I don’t use Android, so I have no idea if there is an equivalent...
It is not the third party apps themselves but the user experience they provided.
I used RIF and every single component looks like it has been made with me the user in mind. Not for profits or ads or anything else for a quick cashgrab.
The official Reddit experience (app and new website) is exactly the opposite. It has been developed with monetization purposes first and foremost and the user experience somewhere on the 10th place.
The fact that Reddit is so hell bent on forcing people on using the official experience is something I just don't agree with. I refuse to engage in a platform where they actively try to bend me over and see me as a quick way to make money.
The fact that you know how Kbin works but literally miss the mark this hard and haven't read the backstory in regards of the 3rd party applications is blowing my mind.
No one has been getting a free ride as you say.
3rd party apps for mobile phones were there before there was an official reddit app. For some reason Reddit themselves didn't prioritize a mobile application so 3rd party application developers picked up the slack and developed them.
Reddit didn't invest in them or paid them or did anything else. They only provided the API.
At 1 point Reddit bought out an 3rd party application and transformed it in the abomination that it is now.
The 3rd part applications have had a huge part in the rise of Reddits popularity and were providing engagement to the platform when Reddit didn't feel the need to supply it's users with an mobile application.
If you don't want to abandon reddit, no problem.
If you feel this is al overblown, that is your right to think.
But this nonsense about Reddit providing a free ride for 3rd party applications as if they have been built of Reddits official app is BS.
There is so much info you can read on Reddit regarding this topic but I guess you choose to be uninformed.
I want to preface, if you see a mistake in the image or have something helpful to add, go right ahead! I still have the layered files for this, so edits can be made very quickly. I chose to handwrite the text to avoid font copyright infringement....
Is the target group people who know what servers and/or instances are or not?
Otherwise I would go up one layer and put in the comparison more users have made about having an mailadres user1@gmail.com and being able to communicate with accounts who also have user1@yahoo.com etc.
It gives users who are not familiar an idea of the concept.
Squabbles is very twitter and social media feed like in it's presentation.
Exactly the thing that I don't search for. But I can imagine that if that is what you search for, then it gives you a better experience.
The fact that it is closed off and in the Faq there is already talk about an monetization model and "fair" pricing for 3rd party users of the API is for me a bit of a red flag.
This was the devs answer on being open source;
"Open source:
unfortunately i can't risk open source. competitors who already have a user base might take code from mine to grow their own".
I can understand but it after the Reddit thing I personally am done with the centralization information of 1 specific platform.
Even then, I am really curious if someone at Reddit Inc crunched the numbers about the amount of power users that use 3rd party apps.
Or even the people who are maybe not power users but just people who are not lurkers.
For some reason and it is just a hunch, I feel that they are more or less desperate for the userbase that used 3rd party applications mainly.
I mean they say that is an "insignificant" amount that use 3rd party apps. If that was true then they would not go in "this" hard on the crackdown I assume.
For me personally. I don't use a 3rd party app because it has "more" features. I use it because it has an option for me to use reddit in an almost barebone way possible.
It is like old.reddit converted into an mobile application. It is how I like to consume that type of content.
On my screen it is 10 posts, small thumbnail on the side and no noise.
If Reddit itself had an option for the mobile app that would give me the same experience than indeed we wouldn't be here (yet).
But the whole social media type feed style crap is just not how I want to consume that content.
I just saw an email from Buy Me a Coffee. Not just one. I went in, and I'm truly shocked. Thank you all for the support; I would like to thank each and every one of you individually someday. Honestly, I don't know what to say. The account balance is $350, which will definitely allow me to develop kbin faster or at least not...
I can understand your reasoning, but would your stance be different if you didn't know the political spectrum/ideology of the devs when joining lemmy or something else?
Just because you don't see something doesn't mean that it isn't there.
Have you vetted every single mod, admin, developer of every online community you joined to see if they are up to your political standards?
We are now on Kbin and can communicate with lemmy instances. Does that make one supportive of the ideology of the developers of lemmy?
You should see an instance as let's say an instance called Reddit.
Now Reddit is run by an mod let's name him Zeps. This instance called Reddit has it's own subreddits(communities) and those are filled with engagement. Zeps decides to screw it's users over and wants to make sure that all those subreddits have to have a certain amount of ads in them so that he can rake in the money.
Some users of Reddit hate that and don't want to support Zeps or the instance anymore.
Someone already has set up an instance let's call it Apollo and the people who don't want to support the Reddit instance anymore flock to Apollo.
It has the same lay out as the Reddit instance and you can also make "subreddits" on Apollo.
People who are on Apollo cannot create subreddits on the instance called Reddit (and vice versa) but they can communicate with existing subreddits on the Reddit instance via their account on Apollo on the Apollo instance.
And now you are saying, " Awesome BlackCoffee, but why is this good for me, the user?"
Well Zeps only has "control" over the instance called Reddit. He has no control about what is happening on the instance Apollo. So if Zeps wants to screw over it's users, they can join an instance that is more up to their standards. In the meantime the users on the instance called Apollo can access the subreddits/communities on the instance called Reddit for information or to contribute as they wish.
Disclaimer; There are also instances who don't connect with other instances or other possibilities that I don't know of as of yet probably.
You don't have an r/all of all the instances(i think). You can have one on your instance of choice where you have an account and probably see updates from "subreddits" from other instances that you subscribed to. I haven't tested that feature that much but I assume this is a bit like the equivalant of r/all.
r/all (the Reddit one) can also show you things that you are not interested in based on the algorithm (because you like this maybe you also like this!!?!). From what I understood an lemmy instance or Kbin etc doesn't work that way. You actively have to search for what you want to see and subscribe to it. So as far as I know you are more in control in what you are feeding yourself in regards of content.
I am not an expert (yet) so people can correct me if I am wrong but this is my understanding for now.
The RedReader app has been given accessibility status by the graciousness of reddit and will not have to shut down. The dev is not particularly happy about how fellow devs were treated though and still plans on adding lemmy in future. Read the announcement here
On the background they are probably developing accessibility tools themselves albeit crap versions of course, if it is developed by the same team that did the official Reddit app.
It is extremely scummy because they will restrict the access for this specific App down the line when they don't need it anymore.
I qualify as a gamer and it is indeed quite hard because of the "easy" dopamine shots you get from playing. But speaking for myself, I quitted and actively boycott the Fifa games to this day.
I used to play alot from fifa 09 -12 and stopped at fifa 13 because of the predatory practices of the FUT implementation. It was close to totally random, costed alot of money and it only counted towards the specific game you got.
For example: If you got Fifa 12 and spend all that cash in FUT within Fifa 12, guess what? In Fifa 13 you can start all over again. Miss me with that sh*t.
I hope that for some people this can be a first and after the "first" it gets so much easier to stand by your principles.
I use(d) RIF for as long as I can remember and Reddit can put their ridiculous practices in a place where the sun doesn't shine.
My account is gonna be retiring with RIF, wiped clean and that is it for me regarding Reddit.
Also my first comment in the Fediverse is the name(?) ;)
Of course, Fifa is very profitable even to this day. The FUT mechanics have gambling mechanics (loot packs etc..) it is why it is such a sh*t and predatory system.
The action I took personally wasn't about a delusion of me thinking that just me was gonna make an impact.
But businesses count on people not taking action because of the mentality "What would change?" and "Just me boycotting doesn',t matter so why would I?".
It is much more about putting up a boundary for yourself and enforcing it. I didn't feel like supporting a company that put out such predatory practices so the thing that I can do is to vote with my wallet, which I did.
If I cannot even do the above myself than I have no right in lecturing others.
I don't know how much people will leave Reddit but I have no reason to stay and fund their endeavors.
The thing that I do know is when businesses have a monopoly for a service/product they provide the money isn't gonna go to benefit the user but to maximize profits.
The users of Reddit are gonna get railed in the end, one way or the other.
