My family member all fired up about immigration refuses to believe that no matter what stat you look at, US citizens are responsible for about 90% of fentanyl coming in.

Some stats from Cato:

  • In 2021, U.S. citizens were 86.3 percent of convicted fentanyl drug traffickers—ten times greater than convictions of illegal immigrants for the same offense.

  • Over 90 percent of fentanyl seizures occur at legal crossing points or interior vehicle checkpoints, not on illegal migration routes

  • Just 0.02 percent of the people arrested by Border Patrol for crossing illegally possessed any fentanyl whatsoever.

Posing for a photo doing a nazi salute in front of a burning cross next to someone in full klan robes has to be the single most damning image I've ever seen in my life. Imagine believing this is so normal and you're so safe that you think, "sure, go ahead and snap one!"

he has affiliated with various white supremacist and Christian identity groups.

yeah no kidding lmao

Is it normal to forget your own age?

I’m still in my 20s, but as of a few years ago I started forgetting what’s my exact age. I always have to stop and recalculate it each time someone asks me. I get asked fairly infrequently, but when I do it’s a bit weird/embarrassing that I have to say “wait, let me calculate”. (I know when I was born, of course.)...

I am not saying I condone what he did

I’m not sure what we are debating/discussing. If you’re going to claim you are a bastion of transparency and information for the general public, then no, you can’t weaponize your site and omit politically damaging information about political groups you agree with/are aligned with.

That’s not just revenge against the US. That’s failing to provide the transparency you claim to stand for. He chose to obscure information based on his own whims. How is that not an issue?

Wikileaks had their own leak and it was a very interesting read.

So I literally can’t talk about anything other than exactly the topic of this article? I am discussing the core thing he did to even be noticed. I am also responding directly to someone painting him as a morally righteous prisoner of conscience.

Regardless of the nuance, when 20% of people - let's be conservative and say 10% even - translates into tens of millions of people, it normalizes very odd, if somewhat tamer, theories and ideas.

This is a cornerstone of rightwing thinking and spreading conspiracies. Qanon says "there is a secret democrat soros-clinton pedo ring and they all talk about it in code via emails. That's why the Clinton emails/server are so important." Then Breitbart says "liberals protect pedophiles and are corrupt with their emails and servers." Then Fox News says "Are liberals protecting pedophiles? Who can say. But this Clinton lady and her emails/servers are very corrupt and that's bad for America. We're just here asking questions and protecting the country."

Each version is more diluted so as to be more palatable to less and less extreme audiences. But it's a foot in the door. Because now someone has an opinion about pedophiles that is clearly laid out as one party's issue, so they are now receptive to things like "Biden is inappropriate with children." While further up the extremism ladder (or down the spiral, depending on your preferred analogy) they're already saying he's single-handedly running pedo camps or whatever insane idea they have that week.

It's just the same crap over and over again.

BolexForSoup,

I cannot wrap my head around the number of people who say “people are just sitting around and not doing anything or taking any action.” Then the moment anyone does anything that doesn’t meet some arbitrary, unspoken bar, it’s “this isn’t actually a protest what a waste of time.”

You talk about all these groups that are unaffected who are actually doing the damage to the climate, yet here you are doing the legwork for them tearing down a protest calling for action on climate change. That isn’t a problem to you?

Like at least offer an alternative or a solution. It’s easy to deconstruct things and tear down everyone’s efforts. There is a reason Pixar didn’t allow people to critique in the writers room without offering an alternative - it’s not constructive and shuts those down who would be more proactive/offering solutions.

One thing that’s important to understand (lots of good answers but I feel this wasn’t really addressed aside from the Industrial Revolution joke) is that precision wasn’t that important for most people in most situations. Stars, candles, sundials, etc. were perfectly acceptable because you just needed to have a general idea of what time of day it was.

It wasn’t until trains, the Industrial Revolution, set work days, etc. that knowing time down to the minute or even second was all that critical. Waging a war? Send a signal/rider/etc. at approximately the right time so everyone is coordinated. Need to get up to farm? Have an open window so the sun shines in or some chickens or some other loud animal that gets up at dawn or near-dawn.

Most people just slept at night unless they had a specific task that required it to be dark out. But again, precision wasn’t all that critical. Sun goes down, approximate, do what you need to do.

I’m not sure what makes explanations nonsensical. There is a pretty clear history of American (and other countries’) force/occupation in the region. Al Qaeda is an extremist group that punched back in retaliation (let me be clear that I am not sympathetic to what they did. This is just a very blunt way of describing it). Pablo Escobar blew up a passenger flight what? 20 years prior? So this wasn’t even entirely new stuff. We’d seen van bombs and such (unabomber) as well. Lots of adjacent terrorist actions that show a path to weaponizing a commercial flight.

What is so nonsensical about that?

Why did we care that Taylor Swift was ATTENDING the super bowl

I don’t follow sports nor care enough about pop music to really know what was going on. I truly though she would be performing with the sheer amount of press on the matter even here. What the hell did Republicans think she was going to do inside a luxury box other than have weirdos snap photos of her drinking beer?

The Manhattan Project example is not as good as you think, because the Soviet union not only successfully embedded a spy into the project, but they were able to smuggle a lot information out and rapidly develop a second version of the atomic bomb (distinct from the one they developed off their own knowledge) based on what was learned at the Manhattan project.

So you kind of proved the point. 100,000+ people weren’t able to keep a secret. It was out before we dropped the bombs. And that sure didn’t take decades.

Unfortunately, I worry this will not be cause for you to reflect, because the nature of believing in conspiracy theories is that you become too invested to use common sense or accept concrete evidence. But I highly encourage you to take a step back and consider that you may be wrong. Because you are. And it’s not an indictment of you, you are still a good and smart person. But you need to make the decision on your own to step away.

Female singers only want to sing about love, relationships, or breakups. They need to sing more about Godzilla, Vikings, The Grim Reaper, or making a bet with the Devil for a golden fiddle.

At this point in history there’s been a billion songs from female singers about relationships. Nearly every song revolves around that topic....

BolexForSoup,

what most female comedians do

Name five female comics you have watched in the past 2-3 years without looking them up. If you’re going to make such a ridiculous generalization, then you better have pretty decent knowledge of who is hot right now. Because I can rattle off plenty of female comics who talk about relationships no more than any other comic and definitely don’t make it the center of their acts.

BolexForSoup,
BolexForSoup avatar

Biological realities =/= women are biologically predisposed to not writing their own music and only writing about relationships when they do. Surely you can see the difference? This is like thinking black people are more likely to commit crimes by virtue of being black.

Christina P (Tom segura’s partner) is hysterical. Liza Schlesinger has some pretty good specials from the mid to late 2010’s but definitely seems to be having a little trouble coming up with really quality new stuff (relative to how strong she was initially. She’s still funny). A few years old now but if you missed Ali Wong’s Baby Cobra put that at the top, it’s a masterpiece. Her followup didn’t hit as hard for me but solid.
