It’s one thing to have differing views, but I’ve seen enough attempted reddit migrations to be relieved that the popular communities in the fediverse so far haven’t been about crazy racist stuff or other extreme right bullshit....
I just preemptively blocked the community for my account. I'd recommend everyone do the same until, and if they prove to be a problem.
I think instead of calling for pre-blocks or defederation of entire instances, we have to be vigilant and keep a close eye on the discussions going on around us.
I'm saying this not because I'm an "enlightened centrist" living in a delusion of tolerance or a fascist in disguise. I am as left leaning, antifascist, and antiauthoritarian as they get. I'm just saying this as I know from experience that there's no real way to eliminate people with bigoted views from our communities other than on an individual basis.
Ban an entire instance, you'll still have to block the individuals if they come one by one to stir shit up on your turf. Just skip the first part and go for the individual communities and users. They will simply find each other and form groups, as instances or otherwise anyway.
I know it's not ideal, but there's no real way to prevent these fascist groups from forming anywhere there's a large enough number of people. We can only block our own interaction with them and form counter groups, and actively fight against their bigotry.
I believe this is the sad truth we all have to live with, at least for the time being, because I can't see defederation as an effective tool.
Look at how many downvotes this thread received. It's mind boggling how large a portion of us, even in these seemingly progressive environments like kbin, are transphobic.
It also underlines what the OP is saying. The average user doesn't need to do anything or think about anything special to use the platform. Simply making an account and interacting with whatever is on front of you will work.
It's only complicated if you're constantly comparing it to reddit in your head and trying to recreate the exact experience here.
Mods made a poll to ask whether to extend the blackout or re-open. After accusations of brigading, mods created a second, more secure poll. The option to extend the blackout wins by a 18% margin. However, the top mod changes his mind, unilaterally decides that the sub should open, and threatens the rest of the mods with...
I don't think most people left solely because of 3rd party apps being killed. I think they left because of the loss of trust that move and the subsequent negative PR created.
It's natural people are looking for something new, even though the quality of life is lower for now. Some things are more important than convenience.
Edit: I forgot to answer the question. No, I don't think it's ironic. I think it's telling.
I agree with both of you @Rexxiter and @Ole, and the best thing for me here is, people actually talking about things like a normal forum.
Reddit has that "everything is an inside joke and to get upvotes, you gotta post the appropriate inside joke first" feeling. It's a collosal collection of memes in that regard.
This here feels like a normal forum with normal people talking normally about normal things. It's amazing!
As far as I understand, the thrid party app developers stood in solidarity and they are scrapping the apps no matter what at this point.
The protest is more of a way to show reddit administration that they need to be community centric rather than profit motivated because the community can mess their shit up if when they need to.
I don't know what it will do, really. I'm just glad I got out and found this place. I hope more like minded people find it and move too.

If nobody is following me, which is true at the moment, does boosting do anything?
If I understand correctly, it doesn't have anything to do with voting-like functionality to gauge popularity but an equivalent of retweeting. This means, if no one is following me, there's no reason for me to boost anything. Am I right?
I'm totally not up for setting up and maintaining it, but it would be great to have a sticky thread for forming and finding RP groups. It would probably lean more towards online groups but could work for local ones too, in time if the magazing gathers enough subscribers.
I hope someone with enough social skills and patience can take up that challenge here on m/RPG.
I gather the threads section of this magazine is intended for people to post blender creations, original work or otherwise, and the microblog is for general discussion. Am I correct?
OC Unlike previous attempts at trying reddit alternatives (like Voat), kbin and much of the lemmyverse doesn’t seem to be plagued with extreme far right buffoonery.

The Steam subreddit has been forced back open.
Looks like Reddit is forcing another sub open, but there are users advocating changing the sub to be about actual steam.

I know Kbin will grow in time but I miss how huge Reddit was.

Isn't it ironic.... that we all left reddit because 3rd party apps were being killed off, and came to a place where there are no 3rd party apps.
