RTR#24 Setting up test environments for federation development, comment wrapping

Today, I began testing a new instance deployment process, which is an absolute must-have before the release. I also initiated preparations for new test environments that I will be using for developing the federation. The first iteration of comment wrapping has been introduced on the instance as well.

Opinion: It's about time a Steam service for TV existed

I know you can buy access to content to some TV shows on the Apple store, Amazon and the Microsoft Store - but these are still subject to geoblocks, not accessible in many countries and only offer a relatively small selection of TV shows anyway (and even then they're subject to this shit.)...

SirTapTap, to mastodon

I think outreach should be focused on the "too many accounts" thing.

My entire generation has been traumatized by making HUNDREDS of accounts and losing dozens of those credentials to hackers, new sites often suffer just bc people don't want a new password.

But when Misskey blew up? I didn't need a Misskey account. I just followed people from my mastodon.social account.

That's the fuckin' magic of the web, baybee. That's email, that's xmpp, that's how this shit was meant to be.

/kbin RTR#16 Update on kbin.social, performance improvements, considerations for enabling API

Today, with the assistance of @piotrsikora, we've updated kbin.social. I also implemented a few fixes that should improve the site's performance. I'm still waiting for a few metrics, and then I'll try to enable the API (Piotr will probably want to strangle me when he finds out I want to do it over the weekend ;-))...

blog, to wordpress

What has been done so far

As we have announced from the very beginning, it is important to us to make our work as sustainable as possible. In this context, sustainability means being modular and trying to enable necessary extension functionality in the upstream project, the WordPress ActivityPub plugin. Regarding the functionality that our project should ideally offer, we have created two posts in the discussion section of the repository on Github to provide a place where these feature additions can be discussed by the community while we work on a draft for a pull request.

During the planning stage of our proposals, we had fantastic meetings with other ActivityPub developers, whom we would like to sincerely thank.

  • The lead developer of the ActivityPub plugin @pfefferle provided a fascinating insight into previous and ongoing challenges, as well as future strategies, eagerly embracing our concepts with receptiveness.
  • The lead developer of Mobilizon @tcit informed us about the most important hurdles in the development of Mobilizon and helped us to assess what challenges in interoperability we were likely to face.
  • With @grindhold, the developer of flohmarkt, a federated marketplace with ActivityPub support, we discussed common issues such as working with non-note object types, implementing instance/application actors, and took a look at some Fediverse Enhancement Proposals () that are of interest to both our projects.

A later task in our project plan is testing with real users to identify typical pitfalls in setup, use and documentation. Although this user study will not take place in the near future, we have recognised the need to start thinking about it now and have already had discussions about planning this task.

Current tasks

Currently we are designing and prototyping the architecture of the hook system, how plugins can register their own ActivityPub transformers to the main plugin.

Upcoming tasks

Next, we will write a small WordPress plugin containing hardcoded transformer classes for the three most installed WordPress event plugins, as well as extending and improving the admin interface for managing transformers.

To those genuinely interested in moderating

@Ernest has pushed an update which allows users to request ownership/moderation of abandoned magazines. Ghost/abandoned magazines were fairly prevalent after the initial wave of hype due to users either squatting magazine names or becoming inactive for other reasons. Now is your chance to get involved, if you were waiting to do...

/kbin RTR#7 Summary of the week, preview of the kbin.social update

It's been almost a week since I started describing my work in the devlog. I'm okay with the progress and the pace I've set for myself. But what matters most to me is that developing the project has once again brought me immense joy and satisfaction. The tasks I've completed so far will allow for a more organized life on the...

/kbin RTR#6 request for a magazine moderator and preparation for an update on kbin.social

Today I continued magazine takeover request. Additionally, I started working on a similar mechanism regarding the moderation requests for magazines, where the owner would approve or reject them. The remaining time was dedicated to preparing kbin.social for the latest code update. I also introduced several improvements to...

/kbin Road to Release devlog series

From today, I'm starting a small series of daily devlogs where I'll be describing the changes being implemented before the official release of the first version of /kbin. As I mentioned earlier, I had some minor turbulence in my private life from which I'm slowly emerging. I have partially stabilized my life situation in various...

/kbin current code changes

I've already discussed some of the reasons on Matrix, but today, I'll try to briefly explain what's going on here. Due to the increasing popularity of kbin, infrastructure changes, the cost of maintaining instances, and development-related priorities, I wasn't able to deliver the milestones on time, which are crucial for project funding (even though I'm really close to achieving that). I wasn't prepared for this and didn't anticipate such a delay in terms of the savings I allocated for all of this. The servers are still being maintained with the donations that came through buymycoffe, but there are additional costs like living expenses and other obligations. So, I had to take up temporary work to ensure the continued development of the project.

This year has also brought many other unexpected personal problems, as I mentioned earlier. Now, another one has been added to that list – I had to end my marriage and a fifteen-year-long relationship. While it's not a sudden decision, it's never easy, but it has turned out to be more challenging than I anticipated. Not just for me, and this time, I want to dedicate as much time as necessary to conclude the matter properly. I had to learn how to do many things from scratch, set up a new work environment, establish daily routines, and more.

So, why all these deadlines and promises?
It was probably the only way for me to accomplish at least the absolute minimum. There's a lot of my own code waiting for review on my local branches, but it's genuinely hard for me to push myself to it for now. The infrastructure also requires fine-tuning, and Piotr is helping me with that. And the days are passing by very quickly.

However, I'm almost ready to continue on this journey, so you can expect that in the near future, there will be a banner with information and the update date of the instance and release. After that, we will work on avoiding such longer development downtimes in case of my absence.
