Some guy.

Yhmg,

It’s a cool story but not entirely true

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientist

Whewell proposed the word again more seriously (and not anonymously) in his 1840[31] The Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences:

The terminations ize (rather than ise), ism, and ist, are applied to words of all origins: thus we have to pulverize, to colonize, Witticism, Heathenism, Journalist, Tobacconist. Hence we may make such words when they are wanted. As we cannot use physician for a cultivator of physics, I have called him a Physicist. We need very much a name to describe a cultivator of science in general. I should incline to call him a Scientist. Thus we might say, that as an Artist is a Musician, Painter, or Poet, a Scientist is a Mathematician, Physicist, or Naturalist.

Gamers_Mate,

I like to use Gamemaker 8.1 which is abandonware. Though I have heard good things about Godot.

Good on them. I hope others follow suit. As an aside, I recently switched to a lemmy app instead of using my ad blocked browser, and holy shit PCGamer’s website is an unusable dystopian nightmare. You have to read the article through a tiny letterbox of multiple competing videos and across the short article there are two full page ads to dismiss. Fuck that.

Lemmy.ml is blocking all requests from /kbin Instances (kbin.social)

I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message...

/kbin server update - or how the server didn't blow up

Currently, on the main instance, people have created 40191 accounts (+214 marked as deleted). I don't know how many are active because I don't monitor it, but once again, I greet all of you here :) In recent days, the traffic on the website has been overwhelming. It's definitely too much for the basic docker-compose setup,...

Pfahli,

Yes, we are already talking about that in the mod team. Happy to find a new home in kbin, we were all pretty much done by this point

Badabinski,

I wonder if we could find/contact/contract a developer with an accessibility focus. I'm planning on leaving some moderately significant donations in a few days (damn settling periods and bank holidays making that slow), and maybe there could be a community fundraising effort to get an accessibility expert in to submit some PRs. I made a big fuss out of accessibility on Reddit in the lead up to the protest, and it feels hypocritical of me to not keep pushing for it now. Not sure if Ernest would be interested in that or not, but it seems like it might be a good idea.

OC Kicking off the new magazine for Dwarf Fortress

I'm migrating here from Reddit, and one of my favorites subs was always /r/DwarfFortress. Since that doesn't exist here yet, I'm going ahead and creating it! We'll kick off with a classic question: How long have you been playing Dwarf Fortress for? I started back in 2008, and I always come back to this wonderful game! It's...

So, what's going on with all this stuff?

Short version. Reddit is a mess. Users are fleeing to the .

There are two Fedi alternatives you can join, Lemmy and kbin.

kbin: https://fedia.io/register (also https://kbin.social/register but now slammed)
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup

New migrants please be patient. This is a lot like Nov 2022. It will be choppy, but get sorted out. This is another golden opportunity to break down corporate social media.

@dandan The original poster used the tag , which the @redditmigration magazine has as one of the tags to automatically pull into the magazine. All mastodon posts should be pulled into kbin as a whole, and then they get sorted into various magazines (or the "random" magazine if they aren't). afaik this is based on the hashtags but there may be some other way it's sorted as well.
