@ggadget6@kbin.social
ggadget6,

I mean yeah you're on a Lemmy instance which means you probably wouldn't see much from threads anyway. It's really Mastodon users who should be having the conversation

ggadget6,

Lol YouTube as a business is basically impossible to run. There isn't going to be a place to move on to.

ggadget6,

What they're doing is making it very easy to sign up. You just need to go to your Instagram and click a few buttons and you've created a threads account.

ggadget6,

Correct. I don't care because I already use Facebook messenger and Instagram which do exactly the same things. However if there's another good option of interacting with threads users without using the app that would be nice

Have you replaced your iPhone battery, and was it worth it?

I’ve had an iPhone 12 mini since launch and the battery life has become pretty abysmal. However, I’m reluctant to replace it with a newer, bigger model. My battery health is sitting at 86%, which really doesn’t sound that bad, but I feel like the actual battery life is way worse than when I bought it. Has anyone replaced...

OC Question: Why are some instances defederating instances which don't sign the fedipact?

Something I don't understand currently about the whole Meta/Threads debacle is why I'm seeing talk about instances which choose to federate with Threads themselves being defederated. I have an account on mastodon.social, one of the instances which has not signed the fedipact, and I've had people from other instances warn me that...

ggadget6,

I agree. I think people who support the fedipact greatly underestimate the network effect. To be honest, I think this place is never going to get big--it has the same issues that Linux desktop has. It'll only ever be used by a small niche group. I still have some hope but it's quickly draining.

ggadget6,

No. Instagram has over a billion users (maybe 2 billion at this point). Threads "only" has 10 million. They've just made it really easy to sign up from your Instagram account.

ggadget6,

We are absolutely not over forums especially for niche communities. They're the best source of information on many topics

ggadget6,

Not literally all--there is also fedia.io and karab.in, to name a few. But it's true that most are on kbin.social.

And federation is working now, though it was broken last week.

The Lemmy User Experience is Better When Centralized into Fewer Instances

Most people access the Fediverse through one of the large instances: lemmy.world, kbin, or beehaw. New or small instances of Lemmy have no content by default, and can most easily get content by linking to larger Lemmy instances. This is done manually one "Community" at a time (I spent 15 minutes doing this yesterday). Meanwhile,...

ggadget6,

If the instances are federated with each other you don't need to do that. You can access other instance's content even while logged into your own.

ggadget6,

Where? Removeddit and unddit need access to reddit to work. And where are the torrent dumps you're referring to?

ggadget6,

Currently all the threads I've checked have been saved to archive.org right after they've been posted, so none of the comments are saved :(

Also just tried reveddit and it didn't work for a private sub.

ggadget6,

They're not connected. Matrix used the Matrix protocol, while lemmy, kbin, and Mastodon use the activitypub protocol.

That being said, you can't login to lemmy or Mastodon using your kbin login either. You can only view and interact with content posted on those platforms.

ggadget6,

there are a lot more than 8800 subreddits though, where is this number from?

ggadget6,

However 200 of the top 250 subreddits went dark. That's pretty huge, since I imagine a large portion of the 3.1 million total subreddits are completely empty

OC The branding for kbin is perfect

The branding for kbin is perfect for capturing the reddit migrators. The biggest friction point for the Fediverse is choosing an instance. If I want to join Lemmy, googling Lemmy takes me to a landing page with no join button, telling me to go to these other sites. Some of these sites even actively discourage signups, creating...

ggadget6,

that's not really correct though. fedia is also kbin, just a different instance, just as karab.in is. It's just that kbin.social is the main instance. And Ernest would prefer that future signups are spread among different instances, not just kbin.social, so the benefit that you're seeing might not be around for long.

ggadget6,

How can I join the kbin matrix?

ggadget6,

ok cool, I already had element but wasn't sure what homeserver kbin was on. I think that would be a good thing to put on kbin.pub (unless it's already there and I just missed it). I've joined now though, thanks!

ggadget6,

kilioa and fedia are kbin as well! They're just different instances than kbin.social. It doesn't really matter which kbin instance you sign up for, you can see content from other instances as well.

And kbin.social definitely can still work out--when the dev figures out the best way to move forward without cloudflare, he'll disable it so kbin.social can federate with lemmy instances. It's just not working at this time.

ggadget6,

I think in the early days the network effect matters a lot--defederating with two of the biggest lemmy servers will probably cause kbin.social to fail really early on. Maybe that can be a goal in the future but if we want kbin to take off then I think defederating would be a bad idea.

/kbin - Just Reddit Things update

Hey, once again, I welcome the newcomers. It's great to see new faces here :) It seems that we've managed to resolve the server issue. Unfortunately, I had to temporarily disable certain features, such as content auto-refresh. It will be restored at the beginning of next week after the infrastructure change, so you'll get to...
