GregorGizeh,

Lemmy definitely beats reddit at several things: it is more left, more queer, more nerdy, and even more obsessed with reddit.

shininghero,

Step 3: unfuck the SIP settings, then email both HR and their supervisor to throw them under the bus. Also covers your ass for step 4.

Step 4: Route the manager's calls to a disconnected number. When they come knocking about their phone not working, tell them, "No, you should be able to dial out, unless someone changed the SIP trunk settings and didn't tell me."

Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world)

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. I can’t count the number of times I played Metal Gear Solid games over and over to unlock new features playing the hardest difficulty and with...

The reason it’s throwing your vote away is multi faceted but these are the two that immediately spring to mind.

  1. Because third parties do jack shit for 3.5 years then every candidate whines come the general election complaining no one gave them a chance and they inexplicably have virtually no voters. Then the people who say “we only have two bad choices“ are generally revealed to be people who are completely politically disengaged those 3.5 years as well. They don’t vote in local elections, they don’t vote in primaries, etc. So to expect results when nothing is done for 85% of the cycle by anyone makes no sense.

  2. In a winner takes all electoral system where are a candidate gets nothing unless they take the whole state, yes, it is literally throwing away your vote.

The deck is stacked against third-party candidates, we all know this. Yet they somehow keep putting all their eggs in the moonshot-basket that is the presidency. That indicates to me that they are not serious people. They are simply using the election as a platform to talk about what they want to talk about. Which is a valid thing, I don’t begrudge that, but it is not a serious presidential run. So pretending like it is does nobody any favors.

Edit: formatting/typos

Edit 2: it behooves me to mention that, as much as I loathe them, the libertarian party is the only party that actually tries to win local and state elections. And because they have put in the work, they have actually seen some success. Though it certainly helps that they can make themselves attractive to Republicans in specific races.

Chainweasel,

Honestly that fact alone makes me question my atheism sometimes.
He fits the bill for the Antichrist in Revelations almost word for word, his followers wear his mark on their foreheads, it’s been 7 years since he gained power, and there’s a war in the Middle East that has the potential to spiral into World War III, which would be Armageddon.

atocci,

Best Buy usually has some sort of sale and I think this is probably the best you can find right now, but there’s also New Egg (I just find them less trustworthy)

Quora is trash, but this thread has a breakdown of many of Lucas' "inspirations", which show he was always happy to directly copy other's art. Most of it is hilariously blatant.

/kbin quick March update

I'm slowly catching up with backlog tasks and cleaning up instances, but there's still quite a bit to do. Day by day, I'm managing to work longer hours, but I still need some time to ramp up the intensity of work. Just wanted to let you know that there might be brief downtimes in instance operation over the weekend. I aim to...

Firstly

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Singular “they” predates
Singular “you.”

Secondly, you not being aware of newer pronouns doesn't mean they don't exist (or aren't super fucking easy to look up). Those have been ignored and rejected by cisheteronormative society for exactly the same reason there is resistance to using they/them, which is:

Thirdly, and to sum up - the only difficulty people have with they/them is one of bias, not of grammar. You've been using singular they/them all of your life without even noticing, guaranteed, and only care now because trans people are asking you to, and respecting them is what actually makes you uncomfortable.

It’s definitely not short, but The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey is absolutely top notch.

The attention to detail that goes into a sci-fi series that lives within a realistic world, with actual physics is incredible - i.e:

  • Ships need to calculate when to flip around midway through their journey to decelerate by burning the opposite direction.
  • Torpedoes and tungsten slugs have travel time.
  • Making hard accelerations or evasive maneuvers can and will crush you into your flight seat due to the intense G forces and the only way to not black out is a cocktail of stimulants, adrenaline, and blood thinners
  • Communications take place at actual light speed, which means when you’re dealing with distances up to several hundred million kilometers, it can take anywhere from minutes to hours for your message to be received.

But fear not! This is truly a traditional sci-fi novel, packed full with ancient alien substances that seem to reprogram human cells for their own use - but to what end? Ancient feuds between those born in space, and those born on a planet. And the answer to the age old question: why not just use asteroids as weapons?

The main characters are an extremely close knit group, who it seems at times get by on sheer willpower and a touch of luck (with some excellent planning).

The story takes turns being told from different characters’ perspectives, which really helps you get to know each character intimately - how they think, and feel about the events unfolding - how their morality affects their choices.

If you’re looking for a more “realistic” take on sci-fi, this series is absolutely up your alley.

The first novel is called “Leviathan’s Wake” and there are 9 main books in the series, with a smattering of novellas between that expand on the world.
