@RunRichRun@burritojustice LOL I should have bookmarked the city I recently saw "Safest City For Climate Change" which was recently pummeled by a weather event... I don't remember which one it was, but I laughed (dark humor again) on someone complaining they moved there because it was "safe" from climate change and they still got hit by severe weather of some sort.
The organizers of @pycon have given community organizers a massive gift 🎁
Let's not squander it!
A sold out#PyConUS 2024 proved that even large events can prioritize safety and inclusion for caregivers and immunocompromised people by way of requiring masks, and gathering venue data to calibrate their policy from year-to-year. Smaller events have proven it's possible at that scale, too.
Now is the time for at least one other large event to step up.
@yatil@anniegreens Ahhh I'm so happy to see XOXO's policy here! I've been bummed to see the dearth of robust Health & Safety practices at tech events in Europe.
PyCon IT and FOSS Backstage were good standouts, but have been relaxing their measures more than I would.
It may not be a relevant ecosystem for you (yet?), but I am pleased to report that Matrix Conf (Sept 19-22 in Berlin) will be raising the bar!
FUN FACT:
if you build electronic devices which contain a raspberry pi in them, consider what will happen if one of them gets thrown out.
someone might open them up, stick the microSD card in them into a reader, and open up that tantalizing "apps.json" file which has YOUR GOD DAMN AWS KEYS? IN UNENCRYPTED PLAIN TEXT?
@foone Funner fact: I accidentally did this with an Electron app. It packaged up my local .env file in the release. Imagine my surprise finding a .txt on my S3 instance from a well-meaning user.
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Act at work. In addition to clean energy solutions being good for the planet, low-income and minority communities typically bear the brunt of everyone else’s pollution and also rely on public transportation the most.
Uhhh, something something CHINESE HOAX something something PLANTS NEED CARBON mumble mumble COMMUNIST LONGCARS fart burp WHY DO YOU HATE AUTOWORKERS grumble sputter BAD FOR BUSINESS poop hiss slither
@campuscodi I genuinely can’t think of a better example for why Big Tech direly needs to broken up. Thankfully my state is trying to ban this sort of bullshit.
A lot of people who spent the last 10 years telling us that respect for the flag was the most important thing in the world suddenly don’t want us to care about who flies what flags how, I notice.
@rasterweb of course. Due to the things I do and tools I use, people are constantly "curious" about my choices. And many times insist that I'm doing things wrong by not using the popular thing. As you may have guessed, this gets exhausting quickly.
Me choosing different tools/whatever doesn't mean I'm obligated to define why I chose to use said tools to anyone.
Even when I've tried to be like "personal preference" someone wants to debate me on it..
Sometimes the way people phrase things is so telling. For instance, telling women they should be "taking care of" their husband and children. Another adult doesn't need taken care of like a child, what you want is for women to be a Sex Mom.
@RickiTarr not to be confused with a sex Mommy or sex Daddy - very different things! 😅
I do believe in a horseshoe theory of queerness - if you go straight enough you wind up in very kinky, queer territory! You have to submit to and take care of him? You need to be obedient and bend your will and do as your told? ....just um, get a dom, it's fine. Don't make it weird by bringing your family into it 😒
Amused at how Altman helped himself to a woman who denied him multiple times, because he was fond of her*, and despite the fact that she was literally the only person in recent history to sue Disney and win - and that no one else in his circle tried to dissuade him (or had enough pull or made enough effort to be successful).
Says a lot about the people at the helm of the "AI revolution".
