May was the 28th month in a row to be the hottest on record.
Spring was also one of the 4 wettest on record, with ~50% more rain than an average spring.
A climate threat lurks in rivers around the world. New research shows where
Rivers & streams offer far more than pretty scenery or an opportunity for a summertime cool-off. They make up an important component of a global system that determines how much carbon is stored in soil or sent into the atmosphere
Plate Tectonics Has a Surprise Silver Lining - Without this restless geologic process, which triggers destructive earthquakes, Earth would not be habitable, by Robin George Andrews May 29, 2024
"...on geologic timescales, plate tectonics ensures that Earth won’t grow so catastrophically hot that its surface becomes unlivable. Without plate tectonics, Earth would turn into Venus. And no planet aspires to be more like Venus.
...And, had it not been for—among other things—our world’s endlessly shifting tectonic plates, Earth could have shared the same grim fate as Venus.
Yes, those tectonic plates buckle and stretch, slip and slide, creating faults that jolt and snap, which generate earthquakes—sometimes devastatingly so. But these tremors are the vital sign of a planet with a beating geologic heart, an orb with a transmogrifying face..."
[I immediately thought of Calvin and Hobbes here, lol.]
The Hill (Opinion): Even climate deniers can’t hide from climate change
"Florida is blessed with 825 miles of beaches. It will need them all because Gov. Ron DeSantis apparently wants the state’s 23 million residents to bury their heads in the sand regarding the world’s most serious environmental crisis: global climate change. "
"According to the Australia Institute, the government collects {twice as much} money from the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) than it does from the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT)." Joëlle Gergis, Guardian, 030624. #climate#climatechange#climatecrisis#auspol
Climate Change is Fueling the Loss of Indigenous Languages That Could Be Crucial to Combating It
Climate-related migration and seasonal changes are forcing Indigenous peoples to leave their native regions—and leave behind the languages tied to them
These languages often hold secrets to the inner workings of the planet, from the best times to plant certain crops to the healing properties of critical medicinal plants
#SilentSunday near #LikaLodge : forest strawberries , May blossoms , young trees & wild flowers : overwhelm of tastes, touch & fragrances : almost unbearable happiness!
Update! Due to a “Faak”-ery in the SEE/Balkans (long delay - missed my connection) & after a lot of planning & juggling with FlixBus / train options, I decided to stay overnight in Villach, then take an early train tomorrow. Now, with the cancellations because of storm damages in Germany, I do hope I will get to Berlin at all! or at least to Munich,… & then : I’ll make a new plan. #InterRain#InterRail#ClimateChaos#climate#chaos
