What's next for particle after the Large Hadron Collider at ? A conference in London earlier this week debated several possibilities for the so-called Future Circular Collider (we're sure they'll come up with a better name eventually).

After spending a number of years studying and preparing on my own, I am beginning the application for the master's program today.

I have two goals in this: 1) reach the point where I can understand and learn quantum field theory, 2) get me to the point where I can pursue a physics PhD.

Glad to be opening a new chapter.

For decades, scientists thought the only place to find supermassive black holes was in the center of massive galaxies.

But now, weirdly huge black holes have shown up in the universe's tiniest galaxies — amd in rare cases, black holes have been kicked from their homes into intergalactic space.

Any @actuallyautistic people interested in , , and headscratchers like "why is there a universe?"

That last one has puzzled me for decades, I mean why is there anything at all?

I have only read the preface and first two chapters but am very much enjoying "On the Origin of Time" which is about Stephen Hawking's final theory, by his long time collaborator Thomas Hertog.

It is a joy to read, easily understood (so far) while dealing with the limits of human understanding.

Researching the physics of sandcastles and I have just found a paper (https://doi.org/10.1038/srep00549) that says you can use hydrophobic sand to make sandcastles underwater, because the roles of water and air are reversed and the air makes bridges that hold the whole thing together. The picture is from that paper. Has anyone tried this? I’m pretty sure I’ve got some hydrophobic sand which I’ll dig out later, but I’m trying not to be too distracted now.

Could I cook a marshmallow by spinning it on a long stick really fast? The stick will make the marshmallow move faster on the end, and maybe the friction will cause it to heat up. Would this work?

Hi, @academicchatter and in particular , is there any alternative to "blinding" coming into use?
I've seen "masking" but that is also sometimes used for other things, and at least in my mind carries more connotations of looking like some one/thing else than of not being visible at all.

My programming language of choice is , and I always try to expand my knowledge of the language and the ecosystem. I’m a big fan of software, especially in the scientific domain. I’m also very interested in testing in the context of scientific software.

I like , reading (currently: Gideon the Ninth) and I love to spend time at small concerts and festivals in my area.
