A mind-blower for a Friday evening:

This deceptively simple-looking graph is a spectrum of gravitational waves ringing through the Milky Way.

The waves may be caused by a chorus of supermassive black holes colliding all across the universe. Whoa!

@coreyspowell Not now, black holes.

When I pick up a wild ant such as this Camponotus pennsylvanicus minor worker I’m always anxious that I return her to her colony. I followed her after letting her go. She ran the full length of a football field then suddenly up a pole. Waiting there another ant of the same species. They fussed over each other. Grooming and feeding each other for several minutes. Then they tucked into a nook in the fence and went to sleep! I guess they won’t be taking me to their main nest today.

The sister she ran to find after the strange experience of running over my hand for a bit. They are feeding each other which ants do when nervous.

@futurebird You...followed an ant across a football field? How?!

I don't think we'll see much or any of it here either. It's just now getting dark enough anyway. Seeing this one through others' eyes was kind of wonderful, though not the same as in person of course.

I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

fembot,
@fembot@mstdn.social avatar

@sundogplanets I don't understand why the under-regulation of damaging space junk is funny. Absurd, ok. But these are dangerous and ppl profit from that, wtf.

fembot,
@fembot@mstdn.social avatar

@sundogplanets It is pretty strange all around. I think I misunderstood – if it helps to laugh at the absurdity, I get that. I deeply appreciate your focus on space junk and orbits and your willingness to address it.

So, this was released today. My third stamp with Canada Post. Qarlinngua (The pants). And technically my second stamp with a family member in it, as the tiny figure in it is my son Travis. Now for one with Hilary in it.

I’ve very proud of all of these, beyond the cache. They are about my home, and family. And also my family has a long history with the Post Office, 101 years. My grandfather, father, and brother were all postmasters in Roblin.

More from conceptual artist-engineer Theo Jansen. He became obsessed with designing moveable sculptures that might help conserve beach dunes, then says the project got completely out of hand from there. And it's wonderful.

Today was a hard day (just way too many things going on). But I have baby goats, and there were finally enough nettles poking up through the soil and dead grass from last year to be worth a decent harvest! As I was picking them, the willow trees above me were absolutely humming with bees. I'm grateful.

fembot,

Did you know the origin of Pink Floyd’s name?

In 1965 they were called Tea Set and discovered another band using that name. On the fly Syd Barrett chose a new name: Pink Floyd Sound.

It was based on the names of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Later their manager suggested they drop “Sound,” and the Pink Floyd name was born.

@markwyner Tea Set! Wow, trying to imagine ppl referring to them as The Set, like they do The Floyd. Or some such.

Wonder if their original name would have impacted them musically or elsewise.

    Today is my birthday!

    If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

    If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.
