So, this was released today. My third stamp with Canada Post. Qarlinngua (The pants). And technically my second stamp with a family member in it, as the tiny figure in it is my son Travis. Now for one with Hilary in it.

I’ve very proud of all of these, beyond the cache. They are about my home, and family. And also my family has a long history with the Post Office, 101 years. My grandfather, father, and brother were all postmasters in Roblin.

Anyway, here's a postage stamp with a 17th century woodcut of a witch on it. Cool huh?

last year @ThreeOhFour told me that buying a kilo of old used stamps was a bad idea

this is what being wrong looks like my friend 😂

[2/x] the first bag of stamps was already "processed" by the original owner: the envelopes had been soaked in cold water, and then stamps carefully separated after some time. my only job was to colour-sort them as i admired the artwork.

the second, third and fourth bags were all unprocessed - corners of envelopes snipped off by the previous owner, waiting to be processed at a later date.

as i learned how to soak each stamp and peel it apart, i began to appreciate that... despite the stamps being 50-80+ years old... hundreds were left unprocessed. i had stumbled upon someone's unfinished hobby. did they get bored of stamps? run out of time due to life circumstances?

or perhaps - and more likely - they had died. and these stamps were shuffled off in a bag of old possessions to the thrift shop i found them at.

this stamp was one of dozens sent to Australia. i suddenly realize that i am picking up this person's hobby from where they left off. there is a dark continuity to this archival work. turning one person's collecting into art.

sometimes i worry about dying in the middle of art projects, and wondering at what will happen to it all. i guess this is one possible outcome.

this is what the cool kids do on a friday night right? sort 60 year old used stamps into a linear colour palette?

progress pic because there is a 7/10 chance one of the kitties will decide to destroy my life’s work in the next 10 mins 😅

it turns out the stamps aren’t 50 years old. most are more like 80+ years old!

this 200 gram bag of stamps from the 1960s was lovingly collected and curated by someone who loved international stamp art. i found it at a thrift store today, and will be turning it into physical pixel art in the coming weeks

Awesome fossil stamps I received from Canada! The conodonts one is so cool - they were jawless vertebrates kind of like hagfish. Parts of their "teeth" are found as fossils.

A 1-cent postage stamp from 1868 is going up for auction in June, and could fetch up to $5 million. It's one of only two known to exist (the other is owned by the New York Public Library) and features an image of Benjamin Franklin. Its "Z-grill" mark is what makes it particularly covetable for collectors. Smithsonian Magazine explains what that means.

Set of insects and spiders stamps released from the US in 1999. Interesting choices here as they included some less appealing ones, which is cool. Cant believe a bee wasnt included though! Props for including a Hemiptera and scorpionfly, which I don't see in media ever.

tomhunt,

BTW, most of the U.S. planned for 2024 were announced back in October. These included some James Webb Telescope images, a 10-design issue, interesting round "pinback button" stamps, a four-scene flower and release, and five adorable stamps.

I've never really associated squirrels with winter, since they should be hibernating, but with the climate changes we're still seeing them out and about and, to commemorate this, the German post office has put squirrels out as its winter theme this year.

Earlier this week, a 24-cent stamp sold at auction for $2 million. Smithsonian Magazine has the story of how the "Inverted Jenny" was made, why it's so rare, and the incredible places some of the stamps have visited, from the Postal Museum in Washington to the inside of a vacuum cleaner.
