All my old slides contain dead links to my old Twitter account. To avoid that in the future I got myself a dedicated domain that points to whichever social media I'm using primarily at the moment.
And it frees up time and energy, to put into #FreeSoftware systems like the #Fediverse. Not everyone needs to do it, but the more people who do, the more options expand for everyone.
More effort before a payoff, sure. But far less wasted effort when yet another platform submits to #enshittification.
My job is to work toward bringing secure, decentralized, open source licensed communication tools with open governance to the masses with Matrix.
But if folks prefer XMPP or IRC, that's still a win in my book. I think Signal is a step in the right direction, too!

The fediverse is going to suffer a hideous setback if Xitter goes into receivership, and they actually put a competent CEO in charge. It doesn’t make me feel good to say that, but I have a penchant for reality. It doesn’t mean it fails. But it sure will mean a much much longer trajectory.

It seems the Canadian government would like to treat corporate platforms as protocols (Carry our emergency messages! Carry our public news!) and also as a business (We will tax you! We will value transfer to local media corporations!)
