Stop using chat rooms (like Discord) as a replacement for tech support forums! Chat rooms and private messaging have a place for synchronous communication, but threads get easily lost, and they’re usually not indexed by search engines. #DevRel #education #stem

Reasons you should not use chat rooms for tech support

Folks, I'm starting my post-#PhD job search low-key on the side while I write up my #thesis.

I have an odd collection of skills - #Linux, #Python, #Jupyter, #pandas, #DevRel, and I've done a lot of work in team leadership and management, and have led a multi-million $ not for profit in the past. Keynote speaker.

My speciality is #voice and #speech AI, more on the #ASR side with models like #Whisper.

I'm looking for something that harnesses all of these skills - and it will be a senior role with senior pay, given my experience, qualifications and proven capability. I have time and will be discerning about my next step.

Job titles that might fit here would be Senior Research Engineer, Engineering Lead, Lead AI Engineer or similar.

Looking for fully remote work, with one day a fortnight max in #Melbourne, AU. If you don't believe in #RemoteWork or #WFH, we're not a good fit.

Super keen on something full time rather than splitting my attention over multiple part-time roles.

Looking to start around August, so a fair amount of lead time.

Keen on organisations that have strong values alignment - #FAIR and #CARE data use, #EthicalAI, AI for social good.

No crypto, no web3, no deepfake stuff.

Check out my LinkedIn for more info on my background:

Ok I’m doin the thread I said I wanted to do last week. (feel free to mute unless you enjoy a little second-hand drama as a Monday morning treat)

Attn people! Are you job hunting? Does this pic of search results look familiar? Have you ever seen a bunch of job postings like this from Canonical and thought “gee I should apply to one of these”?

I’m here to tell you:

IT’S A TRAP! 🧵

sara,
@sara@hachyderm.io avatar

If you’ve made it this far, 1) congrats, 2) I hope you hear what I’m trying to say:

Until the company moves forward… don’t waste your time on a Canonical job posting. You’re worth more than that!

My tale has a happy ending and I’m very pleased with where I landed not long after this saga, so this is now just a funny story-slash-cautionary tale.

BUT I know a lot of good people who are looking for new gigs today, and I’d love to introduce you to them -- if you’re hiring give a shout!

: "In 2024 we’re still rewarding docs sites and focusing our efforts on getting docs up and running, as if we were creating primitive unicellular organisms for the first time. We can and will do better than this. The next stage of the tech writing’s evolution is to integrate with the bigger product lifeform, a step that will finally allow us to leverage things like true docs observability instead of flailing at useless performance metrics. Whether to hire a technical communications specialist will no longer be a question, as it’s no longer a question to have soundtracks in films.

It doesn’t really matter how technical or complex a software product will be. Documentation as a behavior of software components will consistently happen in CLIs, GUIs, developer tools, APIs, and other aspects of software. Wherever there’ll be points of connection between humans and software, there’ll be a need for meaningful, helpful words. If becoming a tech therapist requires merging technical writing with DevRel, the docs are everywhere paradigm will require tech writers and UX writers to merge into a unified professional role, the product writer." https://passo.uno/tech-writing-predictions-2049/

someone in the community room made a salient point that it’s hard for devrel to do their “thing” right now with AI / find biz alignment with AI bc most of the tools are so low in the stack and not too many on the dev tooling side yet. devrel could find a place by helping to build the tooling/figure out what’s needed. more product mindset bc you know devs.

my hot follow up take is this is the difference between and .

TIL about another community on Slack who is now being asked to pay thousands to preserve basic functionality 😬

Proprietary tools that offer a lot for free, without fail, will squeeze you. And unfortunately, because of their nature, a lot gets left behind when you inevitably migrate.

When we select tools for our communities, we need to think over longer time horizons.

FOSS options like Matrix for chat and Discourse for forums are the better bet.

@andypiper Excellent summary, and awesome work!

Can you share a bit about how much of the work was driven by Eugen, et al., or whether most of it was self-guided "this is what needs from a perspective", and then executed?

It seems a lot of projects ( @nodebb included!) suffer from lack of DevRel, mostly because it is not part of the dev's expertise.

andypiper,
@andypiper@macaw.social avatar

@devnull @nodebb that’s a good question. I started out with a proposal for things that I thought / understood from conversations were important to the project; it was agreed to, but things evolved organically as well. Opportunities that came in got passed my way (workshops etc). I identified more things we could do, and things I was not going to be able to do on my own. I don’t think the team would say they were experienced at what can cover, so hopefully I’ve been a good addition 🤞🏻

I was in a chat with somebody and sent them a list of ideas and realized: I should listen to my own advice, and decided to publish them on the blog!

If you ever want a clear example of why I don't engage in more with open source any more except on my own projects or projects of people I know, you can look at the github issues lists (or the one, for that matter) and look at how people reply to issues and PRs.

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues

https://github.com/w3c/activitypub/issues

It's not that the comments are severe, it's that they are grating, and getting anything nontrivial merged is a long, tiring process of navigating these things

devnull,
@devnull@crag.social avatar

@gatesvp — right on. I should clarify that maintaining an project involves wearing many hats; a project manager hat being one.

I am just willing to admit first-hand that as a technical co-founder, I'll often defer that responsibility (or hiring for it) as long as possible, until it becomes a detriment. This is a bad thing!

There's not enough in open-source, that's true.
