No Man’s Sky Video Game

Tried out shadow.tech for cloud PC & PCVR gaming while I'm travelling.

It worked reasonably well playing (No Man's Sky) in , but I wasn't able to multiplayer Age of Mythology across our home LAN network. To first order, this is because the cloud PC isn't on our LAN, but I connected it to our other computer via "tailscale" which should have mimicked them being on the same network. I remain rather baffled as to why that didn't work... 🤔

@aetios it was fine: no problem with latency.

@piepants I don’t think so… it seems to see the game and try to connect, but then time out 😮‍💨 I would assume (though not certain) that if it hated the ip, then it would just not find the game at all.

I'm playing in on a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 and... it is struggling!

It's running on a Razer Blade laptop I bought second hand to experience with PCVR and computer graphics, but I'm still a Mac user for work. This makes me reluctant to buy a powerful new PC as it feels rather excessive just for gaming... uh, on this particular game...!

I was thinking of getting an eGPU, but the cost is also pretty high once you throw in a Razer Core X or similar casing 🤔 Thoughts?

@mountdiscovery It sounds like there's really no way of getting around just replacing the Razer Blade. I'll check out the ASUS ROG Zephyrus, although I don't actually need a laptop so I might do better with a desktop for money... Thank you for the recommendation!

@mountdiscovery A Google just taught me that a PS5 + PSVR would actually be cheaper than a new PC, so I could buy that as a second headset in addition to my Meta Quest 3 for less money, and focus on gaming for the PS and other VR-apps for the Meta Quest 3.

That's a really interesting idea, and I hadn't considered that! I think there's probably enough PCVR stuff I'd like to still prefer a capable PC, but that was a whole new idea... thanks!

I made it to the "Anomaly" in No Man's Sky ! With my GPU struggling, I tried out PlutoSphere, which lets you run PC games on a cloud gaming computer.

But disaster struck!

Once my tokens for PlutoSphere were exhausted, the machine automatically shutdown and booted me out. This was expected BUT I assumed the save would be automatically uploaded to the cloud. It was not 😱 . Apparently, upload timing is erratic, so you have to manually push the upload when using PlutoSphere. SIGH.

(In case anyone was wondering what I did about this loss of game data: I sucked it up and repeated the--fortunately just 1 hour--session on my struggling but brave laptop. But randomises basically... everything... so I ended up having to complete my quest on a way rougher planet where I was hunted down by evil senitels, which was difficult as I am NEW and WEAK. But. Success. Here is a image of my friend lounging on my spacecraft's wing. I took off and he fell off 🤣)

I've fallen into "No Man's Sky"! I made it to the space station, and have selected an avatar that truly resembles what I look like... on the inside.

I now have a glowing ball for a head, which seems to be held in place by rotating electromagnets. Magnificent!

was created for PC but the adaption (which I'm playing) is not at all bad. It's really... quite... addictive. I played for 4 hours and I'm eying my battery and wondering if I could hop on for a few minutes... before... bed...

Coming in... upside down... because I'm a terrible flier and planets can appear above you in space.

We set off to find a new planet to build neighbouring bases in . No Man's Sky actually generates planets procedurally, giving a near limitless number of permutations. A large number were thus summarily dismissed due to not really feeling the grass colour...

As I'm a newbie with poor equipment and poorer shooting skills (I will note that's a bit of an issue in ), my more understandable vote was for a planet low in hazards such as radiation, storms and rampaging sentinels.

Maybe... here!

🚀 I made it just in time and got my first S-Class ship! - Also my first real starship after the starter shipwreck. Just finished the Cartographer Redux event in No Man's Sky and really enjoyed it 🤩

The expedition was like a long and rewarding tutorial mission, I have learned a lot. I tried the game a few years ago but bounced off for some reason. Gave it another try and now I can't stop exploring. Such a beautiful game.

"Discover. Harvest. Know."

Screenshot from the game No Man's Sky: the alien-like player character has big eyes, two horns and a heavy, big body type in a purple space suit. A large yellow symbol in the middle of the screen marks the achievement "Expedition complete" Expedition #3 Redux Cartographers - Reward: Golden Vector starship.

My Permadeath toon recently joined the Eissentam Galactic Hub. Since I know any in game death will wipe him completely, I created a little "watering hole" for him I call the "Memento Mori Lounge"...

Hilbert galaxy BTW. Load up on ion batteries because the planet is pretty hot.

Just found out there's a new expedition in No Man's Sky. ♥️
Anyone playing that?

@jkmooney cool wings. That's an Expedition reward right?
It's a great came to chill to indeed (mostly). I do only play the Expeditions lately. If I don't have a clear goal I just don't know what to do really. 😂
There is still new stuff to explore for me, as I haven't played in about a year. I have no idea what's up with the pink crystals for example. 😁

You get them the first time you find a Corrupt Sentinel Campsite and unlock the terminal. Once you do that, you can also choose to get the multi-tool or find a downed sentinel ship.

The Mac version of No Man's Sky says its minimum requirement is an Intel i5 and Radeon Pro 570X 4GB. So my Iris Plus 1536MB is out (and yes, I've tried it anyway, I get a white screen after the menus, but it sounds like the game is running when I press keys).

What Macs even have that GPU or a bigger one? iMac and Mac Pro? That it? And I suppose M1 Macs count as well, as otherwise this port would be useless if it only supported Intel.

chucker,
@chucker@norden.social avatar

@uliwitness looks like even low-end ARM Macs will do: https://social.pixels.pizza/@pixel/110568043662311484

@uliwitness@chaos.social avatar

@chucker Yeah, that makes sense, if Apple announces it at WWDC saying how awesome their GPUs are, it better run on all the new machines. Though I was actually surprised that they bothered with the Intel version. My guess is that was a side product of the port; first port to higher-end Intel Macs, then make additional changes to make it run on Apple Silicon .
