Listened to The Daily yesterday, which featured Cade Metz's reporting that OpenAI and its competitors have scraped the entire English-language Internet as input for their LLMs and it's almost as if it should be a limit problem from a @stevenstrogatz's book. What happens to the sum of copyright infringement penalties as the number of infractions approaches infinity?
@josh@stevenstrogatz@communicationscholars How can you use the output of an LLM for something in your business and have any amount of confidence that you won't get sued by someone for copyright infringement?
This National Academies workshop on "Evolving Technological, Legal and Social Solutions to Counter Disinformation in Social Media" starts today at noon (US EDT) and will be streamed to the Web. I'll be participating and will present in a panel tomorrow on changing the incentive structures around the propagation of disinformation.
We had to sign Very Official Copyright releases on our multimedia materials, so I drew my own images to avoid any accidental infringement. Please enjoy my terrible artwork.
Pleased to be taking part in this National Academies workshop on April 10–11th, organized by Joan Donovan and Saul Perlmutter: "Evolving Technological, Legal, and Social Solutions to Counter Disinformation in Social Media"
🚨New pub alert! 🚨 Out now in Communication Theory, I introduce a model for how media users evaluate media texts as politically relevant, leading to cognitive, affective, and behavioral outcomes bearing a variety of consequences. A 🧵... (1/10) @communicationscholars@commodon@politicalscience@PolComm
The article is available online now at Communication Theory. I hope you'll give it a read! Many thanks to the editors and anonymous reviewers whose feedback strengthened this piece. 9/10
Thanks also to the following, whose feedback was instrumental in honing this piece: Brian Weeks, Travis Dixon, the PolComm Working Group & MAPiEL Lab at UM Comm & Media, Danna Young, Lance Holbert, Stephanie Edgerly, Annemarie Navar-Gill, Ian Hawkins, & Dan Lane. 10/10
So happy to see this new wonderfully sharp article on Mastodon by @inquiline is out. It thoughtfully demonstrates the ways in which Mastodon's featured anti-abuse affordances can in fact make the job of moderators more difficult. And it articulates nicely how and why hashtag activism tends to be a more difficult project on Mastodon than on the birdsite of yesteryear. Great constructive critiques of which I hope designers and admins take note.
Amidst the growing threat of #disinformation, I am thrilled to welcome a new voice among our Boston University Communication Research Center fellows who study mediated communication dysfunction: Dr. Betsi Grabe.
Must read: @jeffjarvis leans on Arendt, Kornhauser, @ICAHDQ, @Chanders, Carey, @snurb and many other brilliant minds to argue masterfully that we must shift focus from a crisis of disinformation to one of believing and belonging: “The danger is in not belonging, and filling that void with malign substitutes for true community: joining a cult of personality or conspiracies, an insurrection, or some nihilistic, depraved perversion of a religion.” https://medium.com/whither-news/journalism-belief-belonging-07a8dabe35e4 @communicationscholars
Despite the proliferation of #misinformation research, there has been no organizing framework guiding its study. The MRRM is my attempt to offer a framework for understanding the antecedents to and consequences of misinfo recognition (or lack thereof). @commodon @communicationscholars #commodon
At this time of #Thanksgiving in the US, I am grateful for the work of #RosalynnCarter on behalf of our country and humanity. I am also grateful for the work of my colleagues whose research illuminates these important actors. In my November Director's Letter for Boston University's Communication Research Center, I turn to the expertise of Dr. Tammy R. Vigil in paying homage to former #FirstLady.
In this piece for The Conversation, I wrote about my recent research on the effects of political TV. Our findings show that female lead characters in political TV shows can inspire political engagement among viewers, particularly women.
🚨New pub alert! 🚨 Out now in New Media & Society, @Dan_S_Lane (@CommUcsb) and I explore the utility of re-framing the goal of confronting racist speech online from attitude change to norm setting. A 🧵 (1/7) @politicalscience@communicationscholars@socialpsych
We conclude by noting that attitude change as a goal does little to change the social power dynamics in which racism thrives. It's based on the hope that racist speakers will refrain from such behavior out of the goodness of their heart. Norm-setting addresses power dynamics. 6/7 @politicalscience@communicationscholars@socialpsych
In my August Director's Letter for the Communication Research Center at #bostonuniversity, I draw upon the expertise of one of our newest scholars, Dr. AnneMarie McClain to discuss the influence of and representations in the new #Barbie movie.
At the beginning of July, I called out those who target #disinformation researchers. Given the recent events at Texas A&M University targeting Dr. Kathleen O. McElroy for her research on news media and race, this apparently applies to those who study DEI, as well.
During #ICA23, using Mastodon was pleasant and relevant, but shockingly intimate and quiet given that the conference attracted a record number of attendees. I don't miss the Twitter storms, the live tweeting, and the permanent constest for the wittiest post. In the past, I convinced myself that live tweeting forced me to pay attention, but instread, it was a major source of distration. Goodbye Twitter, hello mindfulness! #commodon@communicationscholars
@fheinderyckx@communicationscholars I fully agree! I definitely was more concerned with making great (=popular) tweets than listening and engaging with presentations. Definitely worth it! #ICA23
Out today: I wrote a commentary for “Digital Journalism” on how Mastodon fits into the concerns of journalists and media researchers. As with anything placed in an academic journal, it’s a bit out of sync with the news cycle, but I stand by it.
[Edit: Looks like the free download link has expired, but I'm happy to share the PDF with anyone who'd like a copy. Just drop me a DM or an email!]
@josh@communicationscholars@jeffjarvis The opportunity to never recuperate your taken assets are very high. The absence of legitimate guidelines directing digital currency trades makes it a significant issue. There isn't a lot of that should be possible legitimately against a trade assuming your resource are taken.

Announcement about the list of comm & media scholars I've been maintaining with @bethanyklein: The Google Doc will continue to be maintained, but I’m also setting up a new version of the list compatible with the discovery tools that already allow folks to browse and search other lists of academics on Mastodon. Scholars need to opt into the new list to be included and can do so by following the handle @commodon.
My paper, "Conceptualizing Evaluations of the Political Relevance of Media Texts: The Politically Relevant Media Model," has been accepted at Communication Theory! More to follow once the final version is published, but just glad this will be out in the world soon! @communicationscholars@commodon@politicalscience@PolComm
