This is exactly the video that first got me started on the channel as well. It randomly came up in my YouTube feed and I let it play... then have since watched dozens of these fascinating, boring, videos.
That video has become required watching material / hazing ritual for new roommates. Mostly for the detailed explanation on the importance of pre-wash soap, but also for the tips on preheating the water.
I used to think dishwashers were kinda rubbish before I watched his video and learned how they actually work and the best way to use them. I recommend that video to lots of people now. Great channel.
@Awesomejt@TechConnectify@Rentlar@SilentStorms A few years ago there was a thread on Twitter that basically came down to: either you have a Bosch dishwasher, or you need to study how to properly fill it if you want clean dishes.
He became one of my favorites after he got me to enjoy a half-hour video on storm lanterns. Dude has some serious charisma and really good investigative skills.
@JWBananas@Rentlar@SilentStorms sooo... the follow-up had a very specific point. Many people were getting a residue after trying powder detergent, and I wanted to help with that.
My main issue with detergent pods isn't so much that they're wasteful, per se, but that they cost a lot more for, potentially, worse results.
Many dozens of people continue to tell me that trying powder detergent both saved money and made their dishwasher work better. I stand by that.
I wanted to show that the pre-wash cycle is /important/ - that having detergent in the first rinse actually accomplishes something.
The main thrust of that video was that detergent packs skip that first step, and what I wanted to show was the value of that first step. If you had a dishwasher that worked fine with pods, there would be no reason to change your habits - and I explicitly said as much
And truthfully, what I messed up in the first video was not getting into the nuance of water hardness and detergent amounts.
People who follow the directions on powder to "fill cups completely" are going to be in for a rough time if they have soft water. I didn't get into that, so people started using powder, used too much, and had worse results.
So I went further, showed how you can actually get away with very little detergent, which imo is yet another reason to prefer powder.
@JWBananas So yeah, honestly I feel like you're missing most of the context in those videos.
I never said pacs don't work - I said that I suspect they've led to a lot of dishwasher dissatisfaction, made an argument as to why, and backed that up with a demo of the pre-wash and how, with no detergent in there, more stuff was left on the plates. That then was the starting point for the main wash cycle, and I figured that difference would speak for itself.
@JWBananas ah, I see that now. Genuinely, my mistake for making that assumption. Somehow this convo ended up in my notifications and it's still happening - and indeed, that's weird.
Dude what the hell? You posted publicly in a public comment thread and are mad when the person you're talking about responded? You know this could happen on reddit too right? Creators are people too, you absolute dick.
Ignore that jerk. You’re great, and your detergent videos explained, in exhaustive detail, (as all of your videos do, because that’s literally the whole shtick,) the nuance and context that you were aiming for. Anyone who missed that just wasn’t paying attention.
Also your snarkiness in your videos is amazing and never stop being you.
The other guy is totally unnecessarily being a dick, but is perhaps touching upon a good point.
The prewash stage might have a more effective result if some detergent is put in, but there’s no actual value in that if a full main wash without pre-wash detergent results in a completely clean load of dishes.
I'm pretty sure he was on Mastodon way before the migration! Alec was one of the first few federated accounts I looked for once I got the word we were all moving.
@TechConnectify I'm glad you found my Beehaw thread about your video, even if it's just to defend your dishwasher video from someone talking smack. Thanks, and feel free to lmk if my post title doesn't do your video justice (though overall it seems well-received on Lemmy).
It seems you have replied to, and carried on a reply chain with (meaning that presumably notifications went both ways), a user on Kbin from your Mastodon account.
I'm probably a bit late to reply, but... He was @ mentioned in the body of the original post, which Mastodon would have notified him of because mas.to is federating. Opening the notification would bring him to this thread on Mastodon, where everything would appear as it normally does when viewing a thread on Mastodon. From there, you can hold a conversation as normal with notifications and all. Unless you were looking at instance URLs, you probably wouldn't even notice the user you're replying to isn't on Mastodon themselves.
I watched that video (twice) before ever owning a dishwasher. I bought a house this year which has one, and if I hadn’t watched his video I would have continued hand washing, believing it to be better! I live by myself so it does feel silly having to wait days before I have enough of a load, but he’s right even that days-old stuff comes off fine.
Same. Love this guy. His video about how those roll-around "portable" HVAC units being hot garbage made me both upset I had ever used one, and also excited about the future of heat pumps... then he started doing more videos on heat pumps!
He definitely didn't make me upset for having a portable AC unit. It's... not power efficient, but it does keep my house cool enough to work in on the worst days.
He did sell me on heat pumps, though. I'm hoping to have one installed this fall, which will remove my need for that big luggin' AC unit entirely and totally get my house off of oil.
He actually might be wrong about the efficiency of the single-duct models, too. I read a counterargument that they actually work more efficiently than the dual-duct kind due to the fact that they're dumping heat into cooler indoor air to vent rather than trying to further heat up already-hot outdoor air. True, it causes some outdoor air to come inside in the process, but you're going to want some degree of air exchange anyway.
The newer systems for rating the efficacy of these units may ultimately account for all this. They basically make a mockup of a standard room and hot outdoor space, run the unit in it for a period of time, and then measure how much electricity was used to cool the interior by X degrees. Ultimately that's all that really matters - how much electricity gets turned into how much of a drop in indoor temperature.
To be fair to portable AC, they are inefficient but functional, and you can improve their efficiency with a variety of methods such as insulating the tubes.
Conservatives don't actually care about kids at all. Which is why they're fine with forced child marriage, fine with forced "corrective" surgery on intersex kids that they always put an exception in for their anti-trans bills, and fine with girls getting breast enlargement surgeries.
Because it's not about protecting kids or "consent", it's about having a new boogeyman to fight against, now that it's at least slightly more morally objectionable to go after gay people, though that's not stopping them from trying there either.
I wouldn't put it past them to come after the rest of the alphabet eventually. You know, "first they came for the bla bla". We might not be first in the oven but they'll burn us all given the chance.
Oh yeah we all know that (except for some obvious exceptions in this thread). It’s always been about keeping the masses mad at each other so the top can take their share.
It's a presidential election year; time for every single Republican to suddenly start talking about a "debt crisis" that for some reason didn't exist while they were running up record deficits to cut taxes for the wealthy.
It doesn’t change the fact that the US has an unsustainable growth in the national debt which continues every year. Broken clock right twice a day etc. The US spending more than it makes on a consistent basis is not good long-term. It’s a bipartisan issue, both parties regularly approve budgets well above what we can afford.
Jerome Powell is the fed chair, he was nominated to the post by President Barack Obama in 2012, he was subsequently elevated to chairman by President Donald Trump (succeeding Janet Yellen), and renominated to the position by President Joe Biden.
He could certainly make a suggestion. Congress is the one that has us on an unsustainable path and he has no problem pointing that out; so why not a solution?
I believe this is where it’s from. If you look up similar charts you’ll see similar data. Most debt is publicly owned in the form of bonds, treasury notes, etc econofact.org/why-is-the-u-s-debt-expected-to-kee…
You’re right. We can spend more than we make forever. There will be no consequences to such a fiscal plan. Don’t listen to Jerome Powell, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
Damn, man. These people are too old to handle this shit. Go retire and enjoy your last days. They want to hold on to power until they die. There should be a mandatory retirement age in the government. I personally would do 75 and you’re out, I want to be a bit generous.
Highly disturbing and obviously the next step in this Christian fascist bullshit - only a matter of time till they start rounding up and charging women who have EVER had an abortion with murder.
I'm imagining him planning his vacation but making sure not to do anything that would make a good video. People who know him are suggesting off the beaten path attractions, ands just like no - I'm going to disney world.
The Northern Boys - F the world. Trio of older gents from the UK, they have out 3-4 songs on this channel (linked below, which is shared with another group iirc). Usually in a hip-hop style (tho this song fucks harder than the others). Listen to em all lol.
Regardless of what has happened before, fair play to TK for going out and talking to the crowd and not hiding behind the curtain.
It’s going to be very interesting to see how they change Collision after this. The fake-title stuff was a mess, as posted about more than enough times. Hopefully they’ll replace the time wasted on that with more women’s matches.
I mean, it sounds like this was known-ish and Billet had been reaching out to them repeatedly. It is not at all strange that a cock-up of this magnitude would have been solved some time in the two or three weeks since LTX.
Which is why it is even more wild that only the published video got LMG to respond to an industry contact asking for their shit back.
The thing is: You basically can’t. LMG is still a massive tech media outlet with insane reach. If you ignore them then you are actively hurting your company.
And that especially goes for the tiny outlets like Billet where they are already looking at low volume boutique products. I doubt anyone would have expected that LMG would have made what seems like a focused effort to fuck the company over at every step. But even if the outcome had been “Uhm… I guess it works? Not sure why you would want it, but it works” that is MASSIVE advertisement. And the various enthusiasts who do want a product like this will then know it exists and so forth.
People very much overestimate just how little power smaller companies have.
Because smaller youtubers have almost no reach. Especially because, Dipshit Tech Tips is right: This is not something that anyone should buy. But the custom loop community are delightful sickos who don’t let that stop them. But they are very much a small percentage of any audience.
Getting it to a specialized channel like jaystwocents would increase the number of eyes on it who might ACTUALLY buy one. But folk there likely also are already ride or die with EK or whichever company they like.
And what LMG did is pretty much unheard of. The usual response to this would be, even if it was a mediocre cooler, “In our testing, the thermals were in this range which is comparable to these other products. We would probably go with the AIO or even the stock cooler but, depending on your workload and aesthetics, this could be a good buy”. Rather than “We are too stupid to follow basic instructions, maliciously threw away the card they gave us, and are now going to shit on this company for weeks on end”.
And… the dirty open secret of water cooling is that even AIOs are probably overkill for most consumer builds. That is WHY outlets like j2c tend to do the complete torture tests and then talk about how no gaming workload will ever be anything like that.
I DO think outlets are going to be increasingly wary of working with LMG since one of their recurring bits is “Linus hates company X and rants about it for a month”. But the benefit of having Jake hold it up in front of a camera and maybe convince a few other people they should spend money are still probably going to be worth it.
Like, I am usually a strong supporter of Hanlon’s Razor. But one of the Billet folk must have shat in Linus’s cornflakes at some point. Because everything about this feels like a hit piece. They actively refused to use the GPU that was provided along with the block to test it. They actively butchered the install and compatibility. And then Linus spent multiple WAN shows blatantly shitting on the company. And when they finally were forced to send payment for the block they stole and sold: They didn’t even include the GPU.
The reality is that even if it WAS a mediocre cooler, it would likely perform better than most reasonably priced AIOs with halfway competent building. And from a quick glance: I still have no idea how you would properly install that. But it is a chunk of copper with pipes for liquid. As long as your radiator works, you are going to get REALLY good thermals on both the CPU and GPU.
You know what really sucks? Owning their stuff. I got the screwdriver (it’s pretty nice). I’m drinking from one of the water bottles right now (it’s also pretty nice).
How am I supposed to go on using that shit? I can’t do it in front of anyone who knows. “Oh you like that LTT stuff? You know what they did right?”
All that goodwill flushed because of ego. All that cost, sunk. And the worst part is that this discourages me from buying merch from anyone else again, lest I get burned again someday when it comes out they too are the opposite of the image they portray for money.
I guess there truly is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
I’ve been eyeing their screwdriver for a while, but I don’t want to give Linus my money after seeing this… Wanna sell it to me? I don’t care if it has any minor damage from regular use.
Edit: After the whole Madison thing, it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth… Nevermind the screwdriver, I’ll just buy a megapro or something…
Unless you absolutely need a magnetized bit holder, the LTT screwdriver is literally a Megapro with “improved” bit storage in the base. And trust me, you don’t actually want a magnetized bit holder. Because that is how you get screws stuck inside. Ferrous screws are a lot less common once you get out of computers/“tech” and you can always get (or magnetize) bits easily.
Bit storage in the base is arguable but I’ve personally never found a need. Either I am powering through an ungodly amount of phillips heads or I am switching my bit so often that it is easier to just have a small baggy or 3d printed holder off to the side. Planning ahead for which bits I want in the handle and then replacing them that way is a lot more effort than grabbing a handful (or using the 3d printed holder) and swapping them that way.
The Project Farm video is ALWAYS referenced and… it is a really good video. That nerd doesn’t miss. But if you actually look at the criteria and how he weighted things, it is a weird hybrid “ratcheting screwdriver” and “automotive screwdriver, but not really” middle ground. And considering what the LMG fanbase has done to other youtubers who crossed Linus, I don’t blame him for skewing the conclusion. Because if you actually care about his videos, it doesn’t matter what his conclusions are. What matters are which tests matter to you and so forth.
Personally? I use an ifixit kit for computer and “tech” work. Build quality is solid, I should not need to tighten anything hard enough to need a strong shaft (hee hee) and a ratchet, and I prefer the mako (?) case since it comes with a cover that lets me organize screws. And for house work I literally use a cheap ass Kobalt that I have a love/hate relationship with. I might grab a wera or a megapro some day but… it isn’t a priority. Because if I am really dealing with THAT many screws? I get them started with my screwdriver and then grab the drill or impact driver to finish it off. That is why the vast majority of high end screwdrivers are geared more toward the automotive field where you can’t maneuver a big ass drill in. Versus assembling furniture or home repair where you very much CAN grab the drill and make your life so much better.
Since I don’t own a car or anything that requires high torque, I really don’t need an automotive grade screwdriver. I keep losing screws because the magnets are not strong enough in the bits I have. 90% of my screwdriver usage are PCs and other tech.
Nothing wrong with the megapro though… I might get that one, though I would prefer getting the strongest magnet I can get my hands on.
I bought a couple of hoodies from them on sale, so I'm in a similar situation. Luckily most of their merch is pretty stealthy so the only people who would recognise them are other ltt viewers. I just hope that Linus can get his head out of his ass and give a proper apology and make things right
Lmao. I keep forgetting they sell merch. I refuse to buy merch from those guys. They’ve come across like a bunch of Windows gamers who built a bunch of gaming PCs and then became self proclaimed tech experts and started a YouTube channel.
Yes, I know Linus worked at NCIX and has memorized a lot of product numbers, but that means nothing.
Where you see his true (lack) of expertise is in the storage server failure video and all the Linux stuff he did.
He got mad that Linux was outside of his Windows power-user comfort zone and crapped all over Linux to make himself feel better.
There. Is. Not. A. Single. Browser. That. Values. Your. Privacy.
Then get off the internet, I guess? I mean, are you expecting one to come along at some point? Are you going to pay for it?
Mozilla is a non profit, which puts them leagues ahead of all competition in terms of trustworthiness. They have minor telemetry and sponsored things that can all be disabled, and that’s entirely because they need to make some money somehow. No one donates, so what do you expect them to do?
They respect your privacy by giving you the option to disable everything. That is far more respect than you will ever get from any of the chromium browsers.
Same atm, but I’m feeling adventurous so I’ve decided to branch out. I’m thinking heavy whipping cream (thx Bioemerl) with a wee kick of honey to start. maybe see what vanilla extract will do…
Eating high saturated fats like those found in heavy cream isn’t a great idea on the daily. It can raise your cholesterol decently which can lead to build up in your arteries.
Low carb diets like that are probably fine short term but it’s not something you want to be on continuously due to the fat.
It's clear you care, so thank you =) Without going down a rabbit hole (I mean if you want to, we can lol), in my particular case the opposite worked. Yes my cholesterol is high, but due to the specifics of my diet, it's all HDL and very little LDL, so I'm golden. I also no longer have atherosclerosis and a zero calcium score.(yay!)
I think humankind still has much to learn about ourselves.
Oh man that’s great! Congrats!! Always amazing to overcome health challenges like that.
Yeah I agree lol, I mean who knows what half of this processed stuff is doing to us. Might be causing the rapidly falling fertility across the world given that microplastics have been found in wombs :(
Shapiro has never outwitted anyone ever. Well maybe except for himself. I’ll never understand people’s fascination with him. Or desire to associate with him or what he calls thought.
Just because someone disagrees with you does not mean they lack values. When it comes to fascists in America it’s honestly often quite the opposite. They disagree based on intense values shared with many other races classes etc.
And the fact that American Conservatives so often claim to be color blind etc. All while perpetuating systems with disparately racial outcomes. Only proves their dishonesty.
There are no cultural dynamics that contribute to Shapiro’s behavior. And don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that he has no values. They just don’t extend much beyond self interest and personal wealth and power. He has no concern for anyone else. And his seeming lack of concern for programs with racial disparities outside of the ones that might impact him personally or be abused to him personally proves it.
