College

Turned off music and am trying to buckle down for a study session. Can I just say, this new world of often only having a digital option for a textbook, is AWFUL. It's SO bad for neurodivergent folks.

My textbook is only readable in an app. I can't easily take notes from it. I can't make my usual process of tabs and sticky notes. I can't bounce around the book as I reference things.

It's a wildly negative experience for my brain, inspiring so much resistance to learning the material.

dyani,
@dyani@social.coop avatar

@MsHearthWitch @hollie yes! 👏🏻 That fits. Uses multiple senses. Apparently there are studies showing handwriting activates the brain differently than typing or something. And that it's more memorable.

MsHearthWitch,
@MsHearthWitch@wandering.shop avatar

@dyani @hollie I believe that. My first go-round thru uni I would take really good notes during lectures and then just... never have to look at them again and flew through my courses with straight As.

The act of writing it down while listening to the lecture was enough for me to internalize the concepts.

gocu54,

I'm not saying its a bad thing. As a student, I'll be joining the 7% of blind people who graduate College with a 4 year Batchlor's degree. This isn't a small deal at all and yet when I think about it, I can't help but to feel nervous because I didn't exactly have a plan after, and that sucks because I'm afraid that I'm going to have problems not killing my mom's Credit because of student loan payments that I'm going to have to make, and you know those loan companies won't be nice about it. I just wish there was someone out there who could tell me what its going to be like so that I can not feel the overwhelming fear that I do now, but there is no magic faerie to help me through this, nobody in my family who can really fully understand except my Dad who's excited about this and can't really understand that I'm just absolutely scared out of my mind even though I'm trying not to be scared damn it. I love my Dad though, and I'll not hear anything bad about him. Without him, I would have never been able to go to College much less graduate high school. Still, it doesn't mean I'm not afraid. I wish there was something I could do about this.

if it were up to some of these commentators, Allen Iverson, Derrick Rose, g'damn Steph Curry would have never made it in college basketball and even less in the 🤨

luis_in_brief,

@blogdiva to be fair, size really has changed. No data (though surely someone has collected it?) but when Wemby (and Brook Lopez???) are bombing away from 3… it’s not the game Iverson played. He would have been fine, but I suspect a lot of shorter guys from that era would have had much shorter careers.

"In a first, U.S. students will take the SAT entirely online (no pencils required)"

Eventually, the norm will be for students to take the exam at their high school, on school computers, on "SAT School Days".

Parents will have a new thing to complain about: "Back when I was your age, I had to USE A PENCIL" 😝

While perceptions about the value of continue to decline, the data tell a different story.

"Yes, college is still worth it: The wage gap between recent college and high school grads has been widening for decades, and grew even more last year, per new Federal Reserve data."

"By their early 20s the high-school degree workers likely have many more years of work experience than the new college grads — yet they're still getting out-earned."

@FantasticalEconomics @edutooters Has it taken into account the costs of the degree?

FantasticalEconomics,
@FantasticalEconomics@geekdom.social avatar

@ariaflame @edutooters

These data are just for earnings. So the opportunity cost of college (both time and money) do not factor into the chart shown.

However, a $24k wage gap in your 20s is pretty substantial and would quickly eat up those costs, even if held constant across lifetime work (though I'd expect that gap to rise over time as well, rather than remaining constant).

But you are right to point out there are important costs missing from this story.

theolong,
@theolong@framapiaf.org avatar
