At the end of the day, COVID-19 made people realize:

  • They could work from home and that most offices are shitty places.

  • Their job was really shitty.

  • Governments could finance pretty much anything they wanted.

  • Global warming could be stopped.

  • The really important jobs were the ones that are the worst paid (nurses, for instance).

  • Most governments are run by idiots, who are in the pocket of the wealthiest.

BeingOfErrth,

@ParadeGrotesque my reply is not directed at you.

The ongoing pandemic has also made people realise that:
All those with power and wealth don't work for us and certainly don't care about us. We exist only as expendable units of extraction.

The entire mainstream media lies to us all all the time and will always follow the line of the rich and powerful against our interest.

That despite a global pandemic they had to go to work or they would starve.

Going "back to normal" wasn't a choice, it was a demand from the rich and powerful.

People are not stupid, they just feel powerless. They are made to feel powerless through media, politics and the police, in order to ramp up the powerlessness still further politics have made protest a highly risky endeavour where violence and prison time are a strong possibility. These policies are legalised by all politicians, are sold by the media and policed with relish.

We need to stop looking down our noses at people who are just trying to survive and provide for their loved ones under an extremely oppressive system where hunger and homelessness are rising exactly as fast as the oligarchy's tax haven accounts.

People are doing what they are told is safe. They are not to blame for being lied to or lacking the tools to know they are lied to. This stuff is highly technical and complex. Most don't have time or energy for extended personal education projects. They have to trust what they are told. Again, that lack of knowledge is a policy choice by all political parties.

We need to stop blaming those who are struggling for the fact they are struggling.

We need to empower each other at every level so we can fight back and take back all that has been taken from us by politicians of all stripes, enforced by the police and marketed by msm as good for us.

Leaders do not work for us.

@foolishowl@social.coop avatar

@ParadeGrotesque Then there was that whole BLM thing, where people were reminded that police control the governments of all major US cities, and liberals mumbled until they could go back to increasing funding for police.

One of the things people leave out of a lot of political analysis, for the US or for a lot of places, is that most people don't willingly support governments; they feel helpless and afraid in the face of them.

Because states are based on violence and threats of violence.

Oh yeah...we have more than enough money to fix everything.

But we don't have the will.

We're doomed.

chfkch,
@chfkch@ruhr.social avatar

@tabernac
It is not only that we don't have the will - even worse, we have the will to not do it. If problems get fixed at a large scale, capitalism will not function.
@ParadeGrotesque

KimSJ,
@KimSJ@mastodon.social avatar

@chfkch
I’m not sure it’s true that we have to destroy capitalism to fix the planet, we just have to make capitalism work the way it’s supposed to… with governments regulating things to ensure public interests are protected. Financial profits will fall, but social profits will increase.
It’s corrupt politics we need to fix, not capitalism.

powerbook5300,

@ParadeGrotesque Unfortunately, it seems a lot of people have forgotten and went back to status quo...

matsuzine,
@matsuzine@hachyderm.io avatar

@ParadeGrotesque And that many governments are wholly unprepared to face a real crisis.

@ParadeGrotesque and big pharma loves a good epidemic, it's great for profit.

money has no value yeahhh!!!

AmericanScream,
@AmericanScream@mastodon.social avatar

@ParadeGrotesque

One of reasons governments are "run by idiots" is because most people don't get politically involved. The government is only as good as those who want to participate.

tactac,

@ParadeGrotesque I mostly agree except 4th point : people don't give a shit about global warming. See all these SUV in the streets, planes in the sky and air conditioning systems on houses... Mass growing markets !

carl,

@ParadeGrotesque This has historic parallels. The whole renaissance thing in Europe was triggered by the plague.

housepanther,

@ParadeGrotesque Very true! Also people learned that they don't have to put up with a shitty situation. We can fight back!

abartlet,

@ParadeGrotesque

  • What a Labour government in NZ could achieve when cut off from its focus groups.
roland,

@ParadeGrotesque - Cycling is fun.

Jeanpaul,

@ParadeGrotesque

Just the first two really....they're yet to notice the last:

  • Governments could finance pretty much anything they wanted.

  • Global warming could be stopped.

  • The really important jobs were the ones that are the worst paid (nurses, for instance).

  • Most governments are run by idiots, who are in the pocket of the wealthiest.

tinbee,

@ParadeGrotesque
…and then everyone forgot all that and went back to how things used to be. Mostly because the government likes you spending money and managers like to keep their eye on you 👁️

@ParadeGrotesque and those realisations are so dangerous that they're doing everything they can to pretend COVID is over

jbond,
@jbond@mastodon.social avatar

@ParadeGrotesque

  • That disasters are golden opportunities for disaster capitalism and corruption.

  • That there's a misinformation industry, pumped up by a large part of the mainstream media, that sells lies.

sunflowerinrain,
@sunflowerinrain@mastodon.online avatar

@ParadeGrotesque People forget really quickly under the influence of propaganda. It's so successful, I wish it wasn't almost always used for evil (perhaps those with ethics find the methods of propaganda too repugnant?).

maxtappenden,

@ParadeGrotesque @stevegrunwell Uh huh. But a lot of this is wrong.

Governments can’t fund anything they want. This is the single worst takeaway a lot of people have. It completely ignores the turmoil governments around the world are in as a result of Covid spending.

WindOfChange,

@ParadeGrotesque
Add to this:

  • Most people are idiots.
piensaimnieks,

@ParadeGrotesque Lūk! Un vēl, ka krīzes laikā var pieņemt riktīgi trakus lēmumus :D
Like atceraties, mums bija fucking nakts curfew pret infekcijas slimību :D

kkarhan,

@ParadeGrotesque PRECISELY!

kinyutaka,

It is just nonsense to say that "people" realized that global warming could be stopped
